High Fat Diet-Induced Animal Model Of Age-Associated Obesity And Osteoporosis, Ganesh V. Halade, Md M. Rahman, Paul J. Williams, Gabriel Fernandes Dec 2010

High Fat Diet-Induced Animal Model Of Age-Associated Obesity And Osteoporosis, Ganesh V. Halade, Md M. Rahman, Paul J. Williams, Gabriel Fernandes

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Osteoporosis and obesity remain a major public health concern through its associated fragility and fractures. Several animal models for the study of osteoporotic bone loss, such as ovariectomy (OVX) and denervation, require unique surgical skills and expensive set up. The challenging aspect of these age-associated diseases is that no single animal model exactly mimics the progression of these human-specific chronic conditions. Accordingly, to develop a simple and novel model of post menopausal bone loss with obesity, we fed either a high fat diet containing 10% corn oil (CO) or standard rodent lab chow (LC) to 12-month-old female C57Bl/6J mice for …

Explicit Level Lowering Of 2-Dimensional Modular Galois Representations, Rodney Keaton Dec 2010

Explicit Level Lowering Of 2-Dimensional Modular Galois Representations, Rodney Keaton

All Theses

Let f be a normalized eigenform of level Npα for some positive integer α and some odd prime p satisfying gcd(p,N)=1. A construction of Deligne, Shimura, et. al., attaches a p-adic continuous two-dimensional Galois representation to f. The Refined Conjecture of Serre states that such a representation should in fact arise from a normalized eigenform of level prime to p.
In this presentation we present a proof of Ribet which allows us to 'strip' these powers of p from the level while still retaining the original Galois representation, i.e., the residual of our new representation arising from level N will …

Shelf Life Studies On Processed Peaches, Divija Unhale Dec 2010

Shelf Life Studies On Processed Peaches, Divija Unhale

All Theses

A series of experiments were conducted on the preservation of fresh peaches using freezing and heat (hot-filled packaging). In the first experiment, the effects of four calcium salts (calcium chloride, calcium lactate, calcium citrate, calcium phosphate) on the texture of processed peach slices were determined. Peach slices were immersed in solutions containing dissolved calcium salts at levels of 0.5, 1 and 2 % for 1 minute then stored at 4 ¡C for 3 days. Treatments with calcium salts were firmer than non calcium treated peach slices at all levels. Calcium lactate at 2 % level was best in terms of …

Socioeconomic Determinants Of Infant Mortality Rate Disparities, Alex Krasikov Dec 2010

Socioeconomic Determinants Of Infant Mortality Rate Disparities, Alex Krasikov

All Theses

This study examines variation in infant mortality rate (IMR) between black and white populations. Data were drawn from CDC Birth Cohort Linked Birth Infant Data for 2004. Author examined numerous socioeconomic factors that could explain the gap in IMR between two races. Each potential factor was examined separately before introducing into a complete model. The proposed model explains about 11 percentage points in difference between groups, and showed factors that can be affected by change in public policy, play statistically significant role in IMR disparity. We can look at the IMR as a socioeconomic indicator that highlights both negative and …

Fragments And Transcendence, David Hill Dec 2010

Fragments And Transcendence, David Hill

All Theses

The fragmented figure is a compelling image. To present the figure in fragments is to place the viewer in a position of recognizing their own mortality and fragility, eliciting an emotional response that goes beyond an aesthetic appreciation of the body as form. The Venus de Milo, arguably one of the most well recognized works of art in all of history illustrates this idea perfectly. There are plenty of complete sculptures of the goddess from the same period, but the armless Venus de Milo stands as the epitome of grace and beauty above the rest, and any attempts to restore …

Normative Reflectance And Transmittance Measurements On Healthy Newborn And 1-Month-Old Infants, Gabrielle R. Merchant, Nicholas J. Horton, Susan E. Voss Dec 2010

Normative Reflectance And Transmittance Measurements On Healthy Newborn And 1-Month-Old Infants, Gabrielle R. Merchant, Nicholas J. Horton, Susan E. Voss

Engineering: Faculty Publications

Objective:

Ear-canal-based wideband reflectance (WBR) measurements may provide objective measures to assess and monitor middle-ear status in young babies. This work presents WBR measurements of power reflectance and transmittance on populations of healthy newborn babies (3 to 5 days) and healthy 1-mo-old babies (28 to 34 days). Thus, this work determines how power reflectance and transmittance vary between newborn and 1-mo-old babies and characterizes the range of these measures in normal populations.

Design:

Power reflectance and transmittance were calculated from pressure measurements made in the ear canals of seven newborn (12 ears) and eleven 1-mo-old (19 ears) babies. Permutation tests, …

Barriers And Best Practices For Material Management In The Healthcare Sector, Carlos Callender, Scott Erwin Grasman Dec 2010

Barriers And Best Practices For Material Management In The Healthcare Sector, Carlos Callender, Scott Erwin Grasman

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The primary focus of the healthcare sector has been to provide patients with the best quality of care. Recently, the escalating cost of supplies and the severe competition among healthcare providers has significantly increased the pressure on material managers to operate more cost-efficiently without compromising high patient care standards. While other sectors have experienced success through the deployment of supply chain management practices, the healthcare sector has not seen major improvements in this area; however, in spite of the uniqueness and complexity of the healthcare supply chain, opportunities for improvements are plentiful. This article provides an assessment of material management …

A Reinforcement Learning Approach For Inventory Replenishment In Vendor-Managed Inventory Systems With Consignment Inventory, Zheng Sui, Abhijit Gosavi, Li Lin Dec 2010

A Reinforcement Learning Approach For Inventory Replenishment In Vendor-Managed Inventory Systems With Consignment Inventory, Zheng Sui, Abhijit Gosavi, Li Lin

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In a Vendor-Managed Inventory (VMI) system, the supplier makes decisions of inventory management for the retailer; the retailer is not responsible for placing orders. There is a dearth of optimization models for replenishment strategies for VMI systems, and the industry relies on well-understood, but simple models, e.g., the newsvendor rule. in this article, we propose a methodology based on reinforcement learning, which is rooted in the Bellman equation, to determine a replenishment policy in a VMI system with consignment inventory. We also propose rules based on the newsvendor rule. Our numerical results show that our approach can outperform the newsvendor. …

Direct Observation Of Spin-Polarized Surface States In The Parent Compound Of A Topological Insulator Using Spin- And Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy In A Mott-Polarimetry Mode, David Hsieh, Lewis Andrew Wray, Dong Qian, Yuqi Xia, Jan Hugo Dil, Fabian Meier, Luc Patthey, Jurg Osterwalder, Gustav Bihlmayer, Yew San Hor, Robert Joseph Cava, Md Zahid Hasan

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report high-resolution spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (spin-ARPES) measurements on the parent compound Sb of the recently discovered three-dimensional topological insulator Bi1-xSbx (Hsieh et al 2008 Nature 452 970, Hsieh et al 2009 Science 323 919). By modulating the incident photon energy, we are able to map both the bulk and the (111) surface band structure, from which we directly demonstrate that the surface bands are spin polarized by the spin-orbit interaction and connect the bulk valence and conduction bands in a topologically non-trivial way. A unique asymmetric Dirac surface state gives rise to a k-splitting of its …

Large Group Delay In A Microwave Metamaterial Analog Of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency, Lei Zhang, Philippe Tassin, Thomas Koschny, Cihan Kurter, Steven M. Anlage, C. M. Soukoulis Dec 2010

Large Group Delay In A Microwave Metamaterial Analog Of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency, Lei Zhang, Philippe Tassin, Thomas Koschny, Cihan Kurter, Steven M. Anlage, C. M. Soukoulis

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We report on our experimental work concerning a planar metamaterial exhibiting classical electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Using a structure with two mirrored split-ring resonators as the dark element and a cut wire as the radiative element, we demonstrate that an EIT-like resonance can be achieved without breaking the symmetry of the structure. The mirror symmetry of the metamaterial's structural element results in a selection rule inhibiting magnetic dipole radiation for the dark element, and the increased quality factor leads to low absorption (<10%) and large group index (of the order of 30).

Efficient Mid-Frequency Plane Inductance Computation, Fan Zhou, Albert E. Ruehli, Jun Fan Dec 2010

Efficient Mid-Frequency Plane Inductance Computation, Fan Zhou, Albert E. Ruehli, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In power distribution networks (PDN), the modelling of the mid-frequency inductance for Zpp type plane pairs is very important. It is a key step for the placement of the decoupling capacitors. This paper gives an efficient approach for the calculation of the inductance for different capacitor placements. the PEEC based formulations takes advantage of the opposite currents in the planes. This leads to compute time reductions and memory savings for both the element calculation and the matrix solve step. We also use a formulation where placement of capacitors leads to only small changes in the circuit matrix. Comparisons with other …

Constructing A Regulatory Regime For The Exploitation Of Resources On The Moon And Other Celestial Bodies: A Balancing Act, Jason Bonin, Fabio Tronchetti Dec 2010

Constructing A Regulatory Regime For The Exploitation Of Resources On The Moon And Other Celestial Bodies: A Balancing Act, Jason Bonin, Fabio Tronchetti

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

Law can be both a catalyst and consequence of technological change. Nowhere is this fact more clear than in the realm of space law. Man’s initial ascent to space was manifested not only through scientific discovery, but also through legal innovation, as both a means of keeping up with and shaping the use of outer space. During the initial period of space exploration, legal norms were developed in a world of state actors, designed to promote the continued peaceful use of space and to prevent claims of dominion or sovereignty. Since that time, further technological development and shifts in economic …

The Legal Loopholes In Space Law: The Case Of Shin Corporation Of Thailand - Temasek Holding Of Singapore Business Deal, Watcharachai Jirajindakul, Lalin Kovudhikulrungsri

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

The commercial use of outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, particularly in the field of telecommunication has been accelerating in developing countries due to the potential of telecommunication in advancing development. This article aims to present the legal loopholes in space law by examining the commercial space activity, telecommunication service, through the view of Thailand under the framework of GATS. Using the acquisition of Shin Corporation of Thailand, by Temasek Holdings – the Singaporean Government’s investment arm – as a case study, the article gives the overview about the Foreign Business Act B.E. 2542 (1999) of Thailand …

Economic Governance And Space Law: Emerging Foundations For Development Of “Common Pool Resources” In Outer Space, Valnora Leister Dec 2010

Economic Governance And Space Law: Emerging Foundations For Development Of “Common Pool Resources” In Outer Space, Valnora Leister

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

As commercial space faring capabilities spread, a need is growing for new approaches to safeguard the common interests of humanity in space. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty declares in its opening article that, “exploration and use of outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all countries, irrespective of their degree of economic or scientific development, and shall be the province of Mankind”. However, to date, little has been done to develop outer space for the benefit of humanity. So far, space has been explored mainly by …

A New Liability Regime For The Space Sector – An Economic Imperative, Lotta Viikari Dec 2010

A New Liability Regime For The Space Sector – An Economic Imperative, Lotta Viikari

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

It is not always easy to establish liability pursuant to international law of outer space, yet damages in the space sector can be considerable. The damaging potential of space activities can exceed the capacity of any single space faring entity to make reparation. Absolute and unlimited liability could render the highly hazardous activities uninsurable. Complex causation questions may complicate the situation further. The mere determination of the liable entity can be a problem. Accordingly, allocation of losses within a larger community of relevant entities to balance the competing concerns would seem useful. It could better retain the economic viability of …

Governmental Regulations On Commercial Aspects Of China’S Space Activities, Bin Li, Haifeng Zhao Dec 2010

Governmental Regulations On Commercial Aspects Of China’S Space Activities, Bin Li, Haifeng Zhao

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

Launching service trade and trade in missiles and missile technology are two typical commercial aspects of space activities. Trade liberalization and security concerns are the key issues dealt with by governmental regulatory works. This article will analyze the legal framework and basic rules of China’s governmental regulation as well as their implementation, shedding lights on the interaction between China’s domestic regulation practices, foreign legislation and international standards. This article considers that governmental regulations on commercial aspects of space activities among space faring states have a common policy-driven character. China contends the unjust governmental regulations impeding liberal trade – particularly U.S. …
