Evolutionary Patterns Of Amino Acid Substitutions In 12 Drosophila Genomes, Lev Y. Yampolsky, Michael A. Bouzinier

ETSU Faculty Works

Background: Harnessing vast amounts of genomic data in phylogenetic context stemming from massive sequencing of multiple closely related genomes requires new tools and approaches. We present a tool for the genome-wide analysis of frequencies and patterns of amino acid substitutions in multiple alignments of genes' coding regions, and a database of amino acid substitutions in the phylogeny of 12 Drosophila genomes. We illustrate the use of these resources to address three types of evolutionary genomics questions: about fluxes in amino acid composition in proteins, about asymmetries in amino acid substitutions and about patterns of molecular evolution in duplicated genes. Results: We …

News Credibility And Blogs: Exploring The Effect Of Blog Use On Perceptions Of News Credibility, Daniel Spencer Duerden

Theses and Dissertations

News credibility studies have been around since radio and television began competing with the newspaper industry for consumers' attention. However, at this time, the news industry is experiencing a shift in medium as the Internet is quickly becoming the predominant source by which many get their news. Due to the free and independent nature of the Internet and the rise of blogging as a source by which people get news and information, audience perception of what constitutes a credible source needed to be examined. This study took the dimensions of news credibility that have been set in previous studies and …

Evolving Information Technology: A Case Study Of The Effects Of Constant Change On Information Technology Instructional Design Architecture, C. Richard G. Helps Dec 2010

Evolving Information Technology: A Case Study Of The Effects Of Constant Change On Information Technology Instructional Design Architecture, C. Richard G. Helps

Theses and Dissertations

A major challenge for Information Technology (IT) programs is that the rapid pace of evolution of computing technology leads to frequent redesign of IT courses. The problem is exacerbated by several factors. Firstly, the changing technology is the subject matter of the discipline and is also frequently used to support instruction; secondly, this discipline has only been formalized as a four-year university program within recent years and there is a lack of established textbooks and curriculum models; finally, updating courses is seldom rewarded in a higher education system that favors research and teaching for promotion and tenure. Thus, continuously updating …

Noncommutative Symmetric Spaces Of Measurable Operators, M. M. Czerwinska Dec 2010

Noncommutative Symmetric Spaces Of Measurable Operators, M. M. Czerwinska

Analysis Seminar

Let be a semifinite von Neumann algebra with a faithful, normal, semifinite trace , and let be a symmetric Banach function space on [0, (1)). The symmetric space (, ) of -measurable operators consists of all -measurable operators for which the singular value function () belongs to and is equipped with the norm ‖‖ₑ(, ) = ‖‖ₑ. Special cases of noncommutative symmetric spaces include Lₚ(, ) (noncommutative Lₚ-spaces), unitary matrix spaces ₑ, and Schatten spaces ₚ, in particular trace-class ₁ and the class of Hilbert-Schmidt operators ₂. The noncommutative spaces have been investigated by several mathematicians, …

Found: The Etiology Of Character Realization, Within Rhetorical Analysis Of The Series Lost, Through The Application Of Underhill's And Turner's Classic Concepts Of The Mystic Journey, Lacey Mitchell

Masters Theses

This study rhetorically and visually analyzed the presence of the spiritual journey represented through the journeys of selected characters traced over several episodes of the television series LOST. Popular literature asserts the classic concept of the spiritual journey can be and has been found across the spectrum of various media. Episodes were analyzed to trace the journey of two characters, Jack Shephard and Juliet Burke. Evelyn Underhill's three-fold path and Victor Turner's concepts of liminality and communitas were implemented as a way to organize and analyze the contextual elements displayed in the episodes. The sampling used forty-seven episodes across the …

The Educational Philosophy And Pedagogical Practices Of Eliza R. Snow, Jolene Merica Dec 2010

The Educational Philosophy And Pedagogical Practices Of Eliza R. Snow, Jolene Merica

Theses and Dissertations

Eliza R. Snow's contributions as an educator have gone largely unexamined yet are an important element of her lifework. An analysis of her writing, both poetic and instructional, as well as minutes and notes from her instructional meetings, supports the view that as an educator Eliza R. Snow had a definite philosophy that informed her educational practice and shaped teaching and learning in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Two articles, one on the educational philosophy of Eliza R. Snow and the other on her pedagogical practices, illuminate her contributions as an educational leader. Snow believed that God's …

Geometry-Dependent Oxygen Diffusion Flux And Limiting Current Density Of The Cathode In A Cathode-Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Kevin Huang, James L. Shull Dec 2010

Geometry-Dependent Oxygen Diffusion Flux And Limiting Current Density Of The Cathode In A Cathode-Supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Kevin Huang, James L. Shull

Faculty Publications

An analysis is performed on the diffusion of oxygen through tubular porous cathode substrates having several different geometries. It is shown that the flux of oxygen as it diffuses through these different substrate geometries can be explicitly expressed by a general analytical form with a unique geometric factor for each type of substrate geometry. Experimental measurements of the geometry-independent term, oxygen diffusivity, were conducted for two representative geometries: cylindrical and triangular tubes. These measurements show good agreement between samples with similar porosities and thus favorably support the oxygen flux equations presented. Formulations for the limiting current density were also derived …

Isolationism, Internationalism And The “Other:” The Yellow Peril, Mad Brute And Red Menace In Early To Mid Twentieth Century Pulp Magazines And Comic Books, Nathan Vernon Madison Dec 2010

Isolationism, Internationalism And The “Other:” The Yellow Peril, Mad Brute And Red Menace In Early To Mid Twentieth Century Pulp Magazines And Comic Books, Nathan Vernon Madison

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis’ purpose is to demonstrate, via the examination of popular youth literature (primarily pulp magazines and comic books) from the 1920s through to the 1950s, that the stories found therein drew their definitions of heroism and villainy from an overarching, nativist fear of outsiders that had existed before the Great War, but intensified afterwards. These depictions were transferred to America’s “new” enemies following both the United States’ entry into the Second World War, as well as the early stages of the Cold War. This transference of nativist imagery left behind the ethnically-based origins of such depictions, showing that racism …

Assessing Multicultural Art Education: What Approaches Are Currently Being Used In Virginia Public High Schools?, Laura Nichols

Theses and Dissertations

This study utilized a survey of Virginia public high school teachers to examine how teachers understand multicultural education, how frequently they teach from this perspective, what cultures are represented, what teaching strategies they use, and what, if any incentives would encourage them to teach in this way more frequently. Through analysis of the findings, three major themes emerged which describe participants’ views of the purpose of multicultural education. These themes are “exposure” to other cultures, “understanding” of the way cultures interact and of the context surrounding a culture’s art, and promoting “equity” in the classroom environment and by encouraging students …

Cross-Layer Optimized Wireless Multimedia Networking, Dalei Wu

Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Multimedia communications, especially real-time video communications, is expected to be the major application of the next-generation wireless networks. However, bringing delay-sensitive and loss-tolerant multimedia services based on the current wireless Internet is a very challenging task. In this dissertation, we address cross-layer optimized wireless multimedia networking from both theoretical and practical perspectives. In the first part of the dissertation, we propose cross-layer optimization frameworks for real-time video communications over wireless networks, where the expected received video quality is adopted as the objective function. With the user-centric objective function, we first study content-aware video communications in single-hop wireless networks by exploring …
