Burkholder Integrals, Morrey's Problem And Quasiconformal Mappings, Kari Astala, Tadeusz Iwaniec, Istvan Prause, Eero Saksman Dec 2010

Burkholder Integrals, Morrey's Problem And Quasiconformal Mappings, Kari Astala, Tadeusz Iwaniec, Istvan Prause, Eero Saksman

Mathematics - All Scholarship

Inspired by Morrey's Problem (on rank-one convex functionals) and the Burkholder integrals (of his martingale theory) we find that the Burkholder functionals Bp, p > 2, are quasiconcave, when tested on deformations of identity f in Id+Coinifinty (omega) with Bp (Df(x)) > 0 pointwise, or equivalently, deformations such that abs[Df]2 < (p/(p-2))Jf. In particular, this holds in explicit neighbourhoods of the identity map. Among the many immediate consequences, this gives the strongest possible Lp-estimates for the gradient of a principal solution to the Beltrami equation fz = mu(z)fz , for any p in …

Exploring The Adaptive Function In Complexity Leadership Theory: An Examination Of Shared Leadership And Collective Creativity In Innovation Networks, David S. Sweetman Dec 2010

Exploring The Adaptive Function In Complexity Leadership Theory: An Examination Of Shared Leadership And Collective Creativity In Innovation Networks, David S. Sweetman

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Leadership, creativity, and innovation are becoming increasingly important to the sustainability of organizations. Facing ever more complex environments, traditional views embodied in the individual are being augmented by theorizing which views leadership and creativity as a property of the collective. With theoretical grounding in complexity leadership theory, this dissertation leverages the emerging constructs of shared leadership and collective creativity from a network perspective to provide empirical understanding of the adaptive function of complexity leadership. Social network hypotheses were advanced positing that shared leadership and collective creativity comprise the adaptive function, and that the adaptive function is related to innovation. Results …

Integrating Counselor Teambuilding And Leadership Training Into The Annual Honors Freshman Orientation Retreat, Alexandria L. Kerns Dec 2010

Integrating Counselor Teambuilding And Leadership Training Into The Annual Honors Freshman Orientation Retreat, Alexandria L. Kerns

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Teamwork and appropriate leadership skills are essential to anyone aspiring to be an effective leader. For my Capstone Experience/Thesis project, I set out to analyze three defined problems that plague the counselor group of the Honors Freshman Orientation Retreat, and to create and implement a solution for the three problems as a whole. After analyzing each problem, I concluded that the source of the three problems relates specifically to the lack of training. Therefore, the desired situation or goal in approaching these problems was to create a solution that will encourage the counselors to overcome their prescribed ideals about the …

A Novel Method To Detect Functional Subgraphs In Biomolecular Networks, Sterling Thomas Dec 2010

A Novel Method To Detect Functional Subgraphs In Biomolecular Networks, Sterling Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

Several biomolecular pathways governing the control of cellular processes have been discovered over the last several years. Additionally, advances resulting from combining these pathways into networks have produced new insights into the complex behaviors observed in cell function assays. Unfortunately, identification of important subnetworks, or “motifs”, in these networks has been slower in development. This study focused on identifying important network motifs and their rate of occurrence in two different biomolecular networks. The two networks evaluated for this study represented both ends of the spectrum of interaction knowledge by comparing a well defined network (apoptosis) with and poorly studied network …

Effects Of Delayed Auditory Feedback On Young Infants’ Crying, Sarah M. Sanborn Dec 2010

Effects Of Delayed Auditory Feedback On Young Infants’ Crying, Sarah M. Sanborn

Master's Theses

Neural control of newborn crying has typically been considered to originate primarily in the lower brain centers, although support for this assumption is limited. To address this, the present study manipulated newborn infants’ perceptual experience during a cry bout through use of delayed auditory feedback (DAF). Atypical cry productions during DAF would suggest that newborn crying is under higher levels of cortical control than previously assumed. Infants’ spontaneous crying was recorded for 2 minutes at 4 weeks of age (n=16) and again at 8 weeks of age (n=17) using an ABA design, alternating synchronous feedback with DAF. Standard repeated-measures 2 …

Effects Of Embodiment On Perceptual And Affective Responses To Infant Crying, Jennifer B. Bisson Dec 2010

Effects Of Embodiment On Perceptual And Affective Responses To Infant Crying, Jennifer B. Bisson

Master's Theses

Three experiments were conducted to investigate how changes in bodily states might be related to perceptions of infant vocalizations. In Study 1, participants were asked to hold a pencil between their lips, mimicking a smile, while listening to infant crying. Although there were no embodied effects for perceptual ratings, results indicated that this manipulation decreased participants’ self-reported, negative affect. In Study 2, participants were played both infant crying and birdsong while exposed to similar embodied manipulations, including activation of muscles related to approach and withdrawal behavior. There were no embodied effects for ratings of crying or for affect. Comparing Study …

Evaluation Of Lumbosacral Orthosis In Flexion And Extension Movements Of Lumbar Spine / Norazian Abd Razak, Abd Razak Norazian Dec 2010

Evaluation Of Lumbosacral Orthosis In Flexion And Extension Movements Of Lumbar Spine / Norazian Abd Razak, Abd Razak Norazian

Student Works (2010-2019)

Lumbosacral orthosis (LSO) is a type of spinal orthosis that has been recommended for abdominal support, pain management, and motion or positional control. By implemented radiographic technique, objectives of this study was to evaluate the changes of lumbar lordosis in flexion and extension of trunk movements with and without wearing the LSO measured by Cobb, Centroid, and Posterior Tangent techniques and to correlate the value of lordotic angles in particular posture. Ten healthy male subjects without any history of low back pain participated and a semi-rigid LSO was utilized. Antero-posterior and lateral radiographs of spine images during neutral, flexion, and …

Venezuela And Russia Sign Nuclear Energy Deal, Andrés Gaudín Dec 2010

Venezuela And Russia Sign Nuclear Energy Deal, Andrés Gaudín

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

After six months of electricity rationing that took a significant political toll on President Hugo Chávez, Venezuela and Russia signed an ambitious agreement by which Russia pledged to build a nuclear power plant in Venezuela and transfer certain nuclear technology to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes. The commitment, which also included bilateral cooperation in other areas—-finance (creating a Russian-Venezuelan bank), trade, housing construction, military equipment, oil and technology provision—-makes the two countries what Russian President Dmitri Medvedev called "strategic partners."
