Background:

Sexual transmission accounts for the majority of HIV-1 infections. In over 75% of cases, infection is initiated by a single variant (transmitted/founder virus). However, the determinants of virus selection during transmission are unknown. Host cell-cell interactions in the mucosa may be critical in regulating susceptibility to infection. We hypothesized in this study that specific immune modulators secreted by uterine epithelial cells modulate susceptibility of dendritic cells (DC) to infection with HIV-1.

Purpose: The increasing prevalence of obesity and low participation in physical activity among young racial/ethnic minorities constitute serious public health issues. Research has shown that "overweight" and "obese" individuals have increased risks for the following conditions: coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon), hypertension, dyslipidemia, stroke, liver and gallbladder disease, sleep apnea and respiratory problems, osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint), and gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility). BACKGROUND: Age-related neurodegenerative diseases share a number of important pathological features, such as accumulation of misfolded proteins as amyloid oligomers and fibrils. Recent evidence suggests that soluble amyloid oligomers and not the insoluble amyloid fibrils may represent the primary pathological species of protein aggregates.

RESULTS: We have produced several monoclonal antibodies that specifically recognize prefibrillar oligomers and do not recognize amyloid fibrils, monomer or natively folded proteins. Like the polyclonal antisera, the individual monoclonals recognize generic epitopes that do not depend on a specific linear amino acid sequence, but they display distinct preferences for different subsets of prefibrillar oligomers. We search for the standard model Higgs boson produced with a Z boson in 4.1fb⊃-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron. In events consistent with the decay of the Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the Z boson to electrons or muons, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the ZH production cross section multiplied by the H→bb̄ branching ratio. Improved analysis methods enhance signal sensitivity by 20% relative to previous searches. At a Higgs boson mass of 115GeV/c2 we set a limit of 5.9 times the standard model cross section. © …

Increasing concern over the depleting fossil fuels and rising costs of chemical fertilizers have stimulated the need to find alternative crop biomass production through regionally available fertilizer sources. A field experiment was conducted to determine high biomass sorghum [(Sorghum bicolor (Moench) L.) dry matter yield, and N uptake due to application of urea, pelleted poultry litter, and class A municipal biosolids in two cropping systems of biomass sorghum and nitrogen use efficiencies of these three nutrient sources in northeast Arkansas in 2009. While age-related sex chromosomal aneuploidy is a well-characterized phenomenon, the relationship between autosomal loss and age remains unclear. The emergence of the specific and highly sensitive fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technology has enabled investigators to study interphase cells, thereby overcoming problems inherent with the study of metaphase spreads for acquired aneuploidy assessment. Despite all the advantages of this technique, there are some limitations that could be misleading when scoring interphase autosomal aneuploidy. The objective of this study was to explore the problem of shortage of accountants in Botswana in order to establish which types of accountants are in short supply, identify the sector of the economy which has been most affected by the shortage and find out how this shortage could be curtailed. A survey of the views of employers of accountants revealed the vacancy rate of professional accountants in Botswana as 15% of the establishment, with that the ratio of local to expatriate accountants about 1:1. However, the failure rate of BPR programmes has been shown to be high, about 70%. Most writers have confined themselves to identifying the causes of the failure of BPR programmes. California criminal justice agencies need access to data in order to provide security, health care treatment, and appropriate programming, as well as to coordinate these activities with other agencies. By the same token, outside agencies—whether criminal, social service, or non-governmental—could often do their jobs more effectively with access to information generated or retained within particular criminal justice agencies. Criminal justice realignment under AB 109 has only heightened the need for inter-agency data sharing and cooperation, yet there continue to be misunderstandings about the legal framework surrounding information exchange.

One such challenge is that of identity theft, which has caused a number of hardships upon its victims. Perpetrators of this fraud may use identities of others to obtain loans, steal money, and violate the law. This paper will discuss the characteristics of the offenders and victims of identity theft. A systematic approach for preventing identity theft will also be presented with the hopes of curtailing this epidemic.

We investigate different scenarios for the origin of the extragalactic radio background. The surface brightness of the background, as reported by the Absolute Radiometer for Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Diffuse Emission 2 (ARCADE 2) collaboration, is several times higher than that which would result from currently observed radio sources. We consider contributions to the background from diffuse synchrotron emission from clusters and the intergalactic medium, previously unrecognized flux from low-surface-brightness regions of radio sources and faint point sources below the flux limit of existing surveys. By examining radio source counts available in the literature, we conclude that most of the radio …
