This thesis studies the modern leadership theory formally developed in the 1970s by Robert K. Greenleaf, Servant Leadership. The approach of this project concentrates upon the examination and analysis of the many theories offered by different scholars of servant leadership and the leadership traits exhibited by Sir Winston Churchill. First, a detailed and inclusive definition of servant leadership is developed, establishing the traits necessary for an individual to be identified as a servant-leader. This definition, along with the identified necessary traits, are then applied and compared to the leadership traits of Sir Winston Churchill within the second half of the …

The allocation of merit-based financial aid during the college admissions process presents postsecondary institutions with complex and financially expensive decisions. This article describes the application of linear programming as a decision tool in merit based financial aid decisions at a medium size private university. The objective defined for the model is to maximize the quality of the incoming class as measured by average combined SAT scores. The approach involves using the yield rates from the previous year for each combination of SAT score and merit aid award while eliminating from consideration combinations for which insufficient data is available. Empirical studies exploring the impact of student aid on postsecondary enrollment often stop short of the specific examination of institutional tuition discounting. This research uses separate empirical ordinary least squares (OLS) regression models to examine three questions using public choice theory, positing that enrollment decisions may be affected by many variables but will be driven primarily by discounted cost. These questions are: Does a relationship exist between institutional tuition discount and enrollment? Does institutional tuition discount have a measurably different effect on enrollment of different racial or ethnic groups? This article examines the impact of economic crises on macroeconomic policies in Ireland in the late 1950s and Sweden in the early 1980s, framed within the context of the policy change literature. Each of these countries‟ responses to the crises affecting them, tempered as they were by historical and political factors, provides valuable insights into their political economies. These findings enable us to compare and contrast the nature of each crisis and the policy responses adopted. Advancing the process of friction stir welding (FSW) currently relies on a trial and error approach toward selecting tool geometries and determining process parameters. Before a more formalized design process can be established, a methodology for process parameter selection must be developed. In FSW, various flow paths, as influenced by the tool design, have been proposed to explain the formation of a high quality weld. Central to the discussion is whether the metal is extruded around the tool or whether the metal crosses a shear zone which differentiates the stir zone from the parent material. Microstructure-Based Multistage Fatigue Characterization And Modeling Of An Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene Copolymer, Jason Elvin Fountain

In this work, fatigue experiments and observations are used to experimentally and computationally quantify fatigue structure-property relationships and then capture these effects through a microstructure-based MultiStage Fatigue (MSF) model for a thermoplastic Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene copolymer. Completely reversed fatigue experiments were conducted over a range of strain amplitudes at two frequencies (1 Hz and 10 Hz). Scanning electron microscopy of fatigue fracture surfaces was used to quantify the microstructural notch root or initiating particle size for structure-property relations. Results were then processed in an MSF model sensitive to microstructural effects to capture the fatigue lifetimes for the thermoplastic ABS copolymer.

Commercial broiler chickens are withdrawn from feed prior to harvesting, transport and processing. This feed withdrawal period does not reduce carcass yield but is significant in reducing the potential for carcass contamination from undigested feed or fecal material that may remain in the digestive tract if feed is not withdrawn. However, withdrawing feed can result in an increase in bacterial contamination due to the decrease in physiological pH during fasting. Recently, consumers are more interested in how food animals are raised, prepared for, and processed. In response to these concerns, the feasibility of developing a “feed withdrawal” feed that could …

We performed atomistic modeling to study structural and mechanical properties of materials. We used density functional theory (DFT) for all the studies presented and constructed a method for quickly optimizing semi-empirical modified embedded atom method (MEAM) potentials. In our first study, we show that the reconstruction model in the literature for GaSb(001) is not predicted to have the lowest surface reconstruction energy. A modification was proposed that improves the energy. The second study tries to validate a crystal structure for the Φ Phase of Al-Mg-Zn. The third study deals with plain carbon steel, including some microalloying of Vanadium and vacancy …

Alcohol consumption is a significant riskactor for mortality in patients with sepsis. This study was carried to investigate the mechanisms by which acute ethanol exposure alters the course of sepsis and the effect of TLR4 signaling. Ethanol administration decreases resistance to E. coli and causes decrease in the ability to clear bacteria both from the peritoneal-cavity as well as the spleen. At early time-points, ethanol also suppresses the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. TLR4 is dispensable for survival in E. coli sepsis but it also contributes to lethality in wild-type mice. There are several commercial tools available for VSS of electric transmission systems (TS) but not many for distribution systems (DS). Maize (Zea mays) is an important agricultural crop frequently targeted by pests that pose a threat to plant development and survival. To deal with this problem, maize generates a wide variety of responses to attack by pests, from activation of woundresponse pathways to the release of volatile compounds. Several maize lines have been developed that show resistance to one common pest, the larvae of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda). Analysis of the volatiles released by the resistant and susceptible lines in the presence and absence of the fall armyworm was conducted using SPME coupled to GC/MS. Some researchers and theorists tend to portray African American parents as lacking the cultural know-how to provide a supportive home environment that enhances college access and success for their children. Since contribution toward college costs is one tangible means by which researchers gauge parents’ commitment toward their children’s education, this study draws data from the National Longitudinal Study (NELS: 1988/2000) and examines how the amount and source of funding parents anticipate toward college costs differs between African Americans and Whites. Results indicate that while racial differences in anticipated college funding appear to favor Whites, who aggregately expect to contribute more …

The potential of enhancing lipid accumulation in municipal sewage activated sludge via fermentation of lignocellulose biomass hydrolyzate was investigated. The overall objective was to increase the levels of feedstock lipids in the activated sludge biomass and increase its biodiesel yield via in situ or ex situ transesterification; and improve its cost competitiveness as an abundant feedstock source for biofuels production. To reduce production costs and maintain environmental sustainability, influent wastewater and waste lignocellulose biomass hydrolyzate were used as cultivation media and substrate, respectively. This study tests the relationship of the 6 ideological variables and 7 contextual variables to shifts in ideological alignment through a latent class regression analysis for three periods of years (1972-1978, 1980-1992, 1993-2006). The latent class regression models determine the number of identifiable classes for each model. Using ideological realignment theory (Abramowitz and Saunders 1998) this study finds there has been a moderate polarization of opinions that has occurred, as well as, a moderate hardening of ideological beliefs with moral issues during the third time period becoming the driving force in ideological makeup.
