Biology And Parasitism Rates Of Pteromalus Nr. Myopitae (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), A Newly Discovered Parasitoid Of Olive Fruit Fly Bactrocera Oleae (Diptera: Tephritidae) In Coastal California, Therese Kapaun, Hannah Nadel, David H. Headrick, Larisa Vredevoe

Horticulture and Crop Science

An undescribed wasp, Pteromalus nr. myopitae (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) opportunistically parasitizes the olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) (Diptera: Tephritidae), an introduced pest of olives in California. The native or typical host of P. nr. myopitae is unknown. We demonstrate that P. nr. myopitae is a solitary, ectoparasitic, idiobiont parasitoid of the third instar host inside fruit, and pupation occurs in the host tunnel. Reproduction of P. nr. myopitae on B. oleae in olives in the laboratory and in field cages generally failed. Host-feeding was not observed, and adults fed honey and water lived longer than those provided with water alone. …

Lifecourse Socioeconomic Trajectories And C-Reactive Protein Levels In Young Adults: Findings From A Brazilian Birth Cohort, Aydin Nazmi, I. O. Oliveira, Bernardo L. Horta, D. P. Gigante, Cesar G, Victora Apr 2010

Lifecourse Socioeconomic Trajectories And C-Reactive Protein Levels In Young Adults: Findings From A Brazilian Birth Cohort, Aydin Nazmi, I. O. Oliveira, Bernardo L. Horta, D. P. Gigante, Cesar G, Victora

Food Science and Nutrition

Socioeconomic factors are associated with cardiovascular disease. C-reactive protein (CRP) is increasingly implicated as a candidate linking conventional risk factors and atherosclerosis. The impact of early- and later-life socioeconomic status (SES) on CRP levels has not been widely investigated and a handful of studies from high-income countries are inconsistent. We set out to examine the associations between lifecourse socioeconomic indicators (family income at birth, maternal education, family income at age 23 and own education) on CRP levels in young adults belonging to the 1982 Pelotas (Brazil) Birth Cohort Study (n = 5914). Early-life SES showed significant and graded associations …

Grapevine And Soil Water Relations With Nodding Needlegrass (Nassella Cernua), A California Native Grass, As A Cover Crop, Michael J. Costello

Wine and Viticulture

Nodding needlegrass [Nassella cernua (Stebbins & R.M. Love) Barkworth], a California native perennial grass, was tested for its effects on grapevine and soil–water relations in a drip-irrigated vineyard in Parlier, CA. Vine water status and in-row and between-row soil moisture (at 0.3 m, 0.6 m, 0.9 m, 1.2 m, and 1.5 m) were monitored semiweekly from June to September. There was no overall significant difference in leaf water potential between treatments. In-row soil moisture was lowest at depths of 0.6 m to 0.9 m within the nodding needlegrass treatment but was lowest from 0.3 m to 0.9 m within the …

Effect Of Cadmium On Seed Viability Of Vigna Unguiculata, Henry Omoregie Egharevba

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Cadmium, a heavy metal pollutant of growing global concern, was investigated for its effect on grain seed viability using Vigna unguiculata. The cowpea seeds were germinated after treatment in solution containing varying concentration of cadmium chloride (CdCl2.H2O). The concentrations of cadmium (Cd) in the solution used for the treatment were 0.00ppm, 0.80ppm, 8.00ppm, 40.00ppm, 100.00ppm and 180.00ppm. The percentage germination at 120 hours germination time and the rate of increment in shoot height between 120 and 168 hours were determined. Results shows that the percentage germination and rate of increment in shoot height decreased as cadmium level in the treatment …

The Fallacy Of Neutrality From Beginning To End: The Battle Between Religious Liberties And Rights Based On Homosexual Conduct, Rena M. Lindevaldsen

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Bible plainly states that everyone must either "bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ" or continue as "enemies in your mind." Un-Biblical thinking, like un-Bibical actions, leads one on a path away from God. Part II of this Article will briefly introduce a Biblical approach to thinking about contemporary issues and discuss how Christians can unwittingly abandon distinctively Biblical thinking under the guise of neutrality. Part III will present a number of cases that highlight the fallacy of neutrality in the battle between religious liberties and rights based on homosexual conduct. Part IV will contend that …

Uconn School Of Medicine Dean's Newsletter, Spring 2010, Cato T. Laurencin

Annual Reports - Education

In the mid-90’s, the UConn School of Medicine made several innovative changes to its curriculum that emphasized the development of clinical skills and problem-based learning. One of the hallmarks of the curriculum is the Student Continuity Practice, a program that places students as early as the first month of their first year, in community-based primary care offices. For the next three years, students spend time in that office, observing and learning the nuances and art of primary care medicine.

This is part of UConn’s overall strategy to prepare graduates for all facets of medicine, including primary care. Through the years, …

South China Tiger Prey Habitat Suitability Assessment In Hupingshan-Houhe National Nature Reserve Complex, China, Yiyuan Qin, Philip Nyhus

Atlas of Maine

A habitat suitability assessment of prey species of south China tiger in Hupingshan-Houhe National Natural Reserve Complex was carried out using a Geographical Information System. Wild boar was selected as a model species. Information on the habitat requirements and natural history characteristics of wild boar was synthesized from published literatures. A preliminary Prey Habitat Suitability Index model was derived based on criteria that fulfill the species’ requirement and reduce human-wildlife conflict. The study identified parts of the NNR likely more suitable for wild boar. However, further study on wild boar habitat requirement, species distribution field data using radio telemetry, and …

Distribution Of Toxic Sites In Alaska In Relation To Populated Areas, Michelle Russell, Blair Braverman Apr 2010

Distribution Of Toxic Sites In Alaska In Relation To Populated Areas, Michelle Russell, Blair Braverman

Atlas of Maine

This project is a GIS analysis examining the distribution of toxic sites in Alaska, including Superfund sites, Toxics Release Inventory sites, mining waste sites, and Formerly Used Defense Sites, in relation to populated areas. Our goal was to determine whether these hazardous sites are located disproportionately near indigenous communities, whose populations may be particularly vulnerable to toxics due to their subsistence lifestyles. Our statistical analysis found that, in census tracts with at least one identified toxic site, the percentage of the population identifying as Alaska Native is 59% higher than in those census tracts without any toxic sites. Further analysis …

The Core Circadian Gene Cryptochrome 2 Influences Breast Cancer Risk, Possibly By Mediating Hormone Signaling, Richard G. Stevens Apr 2010

The Core Circadian Gene Cryptochrome 2 Influences Breast Cancer Risk, Possibly By Mediating Hormone Signaling, Richard G. Stevens

UCHC Articles - Research

As transcriptional regulators, circadian genes have the potential to influence a variety of biological pathways, including many cancer-related processes. Cryptochrome 2 (CRY2) is essential for proper circadian timing, and is a key component of the circadian regulatory feedback loop. Here, we report findings from genetic, epigenetic, loss-of-function, and transcriptional profiling analyses of CRY2 in breast cancer. Six SNPs in CRY2 were identified for genotyping in a case-control population (N=441 cases and N=479 controls), and three SNPs (rs11038689, rs7123390, and rs1401417) were significantly associated with postmenopausal breast cancer risk, with significant effect modification by menopausal status (dominant model for …
