What Non-Specific Vocabulary Is Important On Standardized Tests? A Look At The New York State Living Environment Exam, Jessica Hosier
What Non-Specific Vocabulary Is Important On Standardized Tests? A Look At The New York State Living Environment Exam, Jessica Hosier
Education Masters
What vocabulary, not specific to any particular content area, do students need to know to maximize their achievement on standardized tests? This study focused on the New York State Living Environment Regents Exam, analyzing a total of 27 tests using the software program FREQUENCY for the non-specific vocabulary most commonly used by the test developers. With more importance being assigned to standardized tests such as the Regents with the advent of the No Child Left Behind Act, students who do not already have the skills to incorporate unknown vocabulary risk earning scores that do not reflect their true academic abilities. …

Rates Of Bone Loss In Young Adult Males, Bonny L. Specker, Howard Wey, Eric P. Smith
Rates Of Bone Loss In Young Adult Males, Bonny L. Specker, Howard Wey, Eric P. Smith

Osteoporosis-related fractures occur more frequently in women compared with men, but mortality is greater in men compared with women. Peak bone mass is a significant predictor of osteoporosis and fracture risk; therefore, it is important to optimize peak bone mass during young adulthood. Several recent longitudinal studies, which are summarized in this article, have investigated bone changes among young men. Cortical bone loss does not appear to be significant until individuals reach their mid-30s and is associated with decreased sex hormone concentrations. Significant trabecular bone loss in young men aged in their 20s has been reported and is associated with …

High School Equivalency Program (Hep), Ricky Morris
Service-Learning Program
The purpose of HEP is to help migrant and seasonal farm workers who have worked in an agricultural job for at least 75 hours, and their children, who are 16years or older and have at least an 8th grade skill level in reading and math, to enhance socioeconomic mobility through education by providing an opportunity to take advantage of federally-sponsored GED training and tests. HEP also provides suitable lodging, meals, and health care for the duration of the student’s time in the residential program, as many of the students would otherwise be unable to attend. The learning goals for Service …

Human Physiology Community Education, Sasha Volgamore, Kristen Mitchell
Service-Learning Program
The purpose of our project was to educate community members of all age groups to provide them with a basic knowledge of the fundamental workings of the human body, with specific emphasis on skeletal muscle physiology and cardiovascular physiology. It is our hope that members of our target audiences will use this information for future self-directed inquiries into human physiology with regard to their own bodies. Regardless of their age, everyone can decide to eat healthier and live a more active lifestyle. With the knowledge we provided the community, we hope they will appreciate that a healthy lifestyle is paramount …

Effects Of Mold Exposure On Immune Cells, Katrin Gorham
Effects Of Mold Exposure On Immune Cells, Katrin Gorham
Honors Projects in Science and Technology
The relationship between exposure to mold spores and human disease is only beginning to be understood. While evidence exists of strong correlations between moldy environments and allergic and infectious diseases, the relationship between exposure to specific species and human immune responses to them is not fully understood. This paper seeks to clarify this relationship by analyzing the effects of exposing murine immune cells to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by different mold species. Mold species studied include Stachybotrys alternans; tests performed include cell viability studies and immunoassays. Results have implications for further research and treatment of mold-related diseases.

Investigating The Role Of P311 In The Hypertrophic Scar, Jianglin Tan, Xu Peng, Gaoxing Luo, Bing Ma, Chuan Cao, Weifeng He, Shunzong Yuan, Shirong Li, John A. Wilkins, Jun Wu
MIIR Faculty Research
The mechanisms of hypertrophic scar formation are not fully understood. We previously screened the differentially expressed genes of human hypertrophic scar tissue and identified P311 gene as upregulated. As the activities of P311 in human fibroblast function are unknown, we examined the distribution of it and the effects of forced expression or silencing of expression of P311. P311 expression was detected in fibroblast-like cells from the hypertrophic scar of burn injury patients but not in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, epidermal cells or normal skin dermal cells. Transfection of fibroblasts with P311 gene stimulated the expression …

Regional Target Surveillance With Cooperative Robots Using Apfs, Jessica Larocque
Regional Target Surveillance With Cooperative Robots Using Apfs, Jessica Larocque
Theses
Target surveillance in a bounded environment has been a growing focus in the past few years, particularly with recent world events prompting the need for environmental monitoring using automated surveillance. Scenarios exist where the goal is to be able to track targets within a certain distance and yet maintain a proper distribution of the surveillance units to provide field coverage. Previous works in this area using mobile robots as the surveillance units have made assumptions of a global awareness capability provided by a central controller. Artificial Potential Fields (APFs) have been used in cooperative robots and swarm research for applications …

Fibropapillomatosis (FP) is a panzootic plaguing all species of sea turtles with green turtles having the highest percentage of affliction. Although fibropapilloma-associated turtle herpes virus (FPTHV) has been identified as the causative agent of FP, the primary vector triggering this chronic tumor-forming disease is still unknown. Parasitic marine leeches (Ozobranchus spp.) could be a potential mechanical vector behind the emergence of this panzootic, although it is uncertain if it is species specific. Ozobranchus spp. are very small and difficult to distinguish anatomically, and until now, there have been few attempts to document them. DNA barcoding using mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase …
