Biosynthesis Of Fatty Acid Amides, Emma K. Farrell
Biosynthesis Of Fatty Acid Amides, Emma K. Farrell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Primary fatty acid amides (PFAMs) and N-acylglycines (NAGs) are important signaling molecules in the mammalian nervous system, binding to many drug receptors and demonstrating control over sleep, locomotor activity, angiogenesis, vasodilatation, gap junction communication, and many other processes. Oleamide is the best-studied of the PFAMs, while the in vivo activity of the others is largely unstudied. Even less is known about the NAGs, as their discovery as novel compounds is much more recent due to low endogenous levels. Herein is described extraction and quantification techniques for PFAMs and NAGs in cultured cells and media using solvent extraction combined with …
Use Of Model Compounds To Study Potential Removal Of Pharmaceuticals Using Octolig®, Wen-Shan Chang
Use Of Model Compounds To Study Potential Removal Of Pharmaceuticals Using Octolig®, Wen-Shan Chang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The existence of pharmaceuticals in the environment has some adverse effects, and may pose threat to the organisms in the environment. The possibility of removing certain pharmaceuticals from wastewater was tested using Octolig®, a commercially available material with polyethyldiamine moieties covalently attached to high-surface area silica gel. Selected drug models were subjected to column chromatography in efforts to effect removal by means of ion encapsulation, the effectiveness of which would depend upon having appropriate anionic functional groups. The experimental results suggested that the model compounds, Rose Bengal, Eosin Y, Erythrosine , ZPS, and Lissamine Green B were successfully encapsulated by …
Anuran And Tree Community Structure Of Cypress Domes In Tampa, Florida, Relative To Time Since Incorporation Within The Urban Landscape, Christopher Haggerty
Anuran And Tree Community Structure Of Cypress Domes In Tampa, Florida, Relative To Time Since Incorporation Within The Urban Landscape, Christopher Haggerty
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Wetlands in densely urbanized landscapes display altered physical, chemical, and biological features; however, long term trends in these are poorly known. The purpose of this study was to determine if biological, physical, and chemical changes in isolated cypress domes are related to time since incorporation within an urban landscape. Sixteen cypress domes in Tampa, Florida were placed into four decadal age groups based on construction date of residential homes within 200 m of wetland edge, with multiples in each age group: 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and rural sites as regional controls. Each site was visited monthly from July 2008 until …
A Philosophical Inquiry On The Valuation And Selection Of Musical Materials For Culturally Diverse Learners In Global Environments, Jonathan Bassett
A Philosophical Inquiry On The Valuation And Selection Of Musical Materials For Culturally Diverse Learners In Global Environments, Jonathan Bassett
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The selection of musical materials for use in the classroom is problematic. Since music educators have limited time with students, the inclusion of musical materials necessitates the perceived exclusion of other musical materials. This perception is due in part to the increasing diversity of students represented in the classroom, the cultural labeling of musical materials, the influence of multiculturalism on music education, and the influence of the Western aesthetic in music education. Since diverse groups can and do propose socially perceived valuations of these materials as critical for the inclusion of specific musical materials for use in the classroom, this …

Urbanization Of Seven Springs, New Mexico:An Evaluation Of Current And Projected Impacts On Ground- And Surface-Water Resources, William S. Mcdonald
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The village of Seven Springs, New Mexico, lies north of Fenton Lake in the valley of the Rio Cebolla in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico. The valley is funnel shaped -- narrowest downstream -- with homes most densely packed at the bottom of the funnel. It is typical of many small communities scattered throughout the state in that residents rely on private wells for drinking water and on individual septic systems for disposal of household waste. The current population in the village and the valley is light -- about 50 permanent residents swelling to about 100 during the …
Spatial And Temporal Prediction Models Of Alaska’S 11 Species Mega-Predator Community: Towards A First State-Wide Ecological Habitat, Impact, And Climate Assessment, Malte Semmler
Faculty
In this study, eleven mega predators, coyote (Canis latrans), wolf (Canis lupus), fox (Vulpes vulpes), arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), black bear (Ursus americanus), brown bear (Ursus arctos), polar bear (Ursus maritimus), wolverine (Gulo gulo), marten (Martes americana), lynx (Lynx canadensis) and golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) were selected to represent an Ecosystem Unit entitled “Mega Predator”. The most influential factors affecting this Ecosystem Unit were determined using a machine learning algorithm (TreeNet) and a Geographic Information System (GIS). Public available range layers were corrected for errors and detectability using occupancy model, and several ‘robust’ hotspots of the predator community were identified. …

Ain't I A Muslim Woman?: African American Muslim Women Practicing 'Multiple Critique', Sara Aceves
Pomona Senior Theses
This thesis explores both limits and possibilities. It reflects on processes of appropriation, re-signification and critique as practiced variably by African American Muslim women. I situate these processes within the concept of multiple critique, for specifically three moments-Sherman Jackson's Third Resurrection, the black feminist tradition, and Islamic feminisms.

Invasive aspergillosis (IA) is a life-threatening disease that occurs in immunodepressed patients when infected with Aspergillus fumigatus. This fungus is the second most-common causative agent of fungal disease after Candida albicans. Nevertheless, much remains to be learned about the mechanisms by which A. fulmigatus activates the innate immune system. We investigated the inflammatory response to conidia and hyphae of A. fumigatus and specifically, their capacity to trigger activation of an inflammasome. Our results show that in contrast to conidia, hyphal fragments induce NLRP3 inflammasome assembly, caspase-1 activation and IL-1β release from a human monocyte cell line. The ability of Aspergillus …

Biosynthesis of lysine and meso-diaminopimelic acid in bacteria provides essential components for protein synthesis and construction of the bacterial peptidoglycan cell wall. The dapE operon enzymes synthesize both meso-diaminopimelic acid and lysine and, therefore, represent potential targets for novel antibacterials. The dapE-encoded N-succinyl-l,l-diaminopimelic acid desuccinylase functions in a late step of the pathway and converts N-succinyl-l,l-diaminopimelic acid to l,l-diaminopimelic acid and succinate. Deletion of the dapE gene is lethal to Helicobacter pylori and Mycobacterium smegmatis, indicating that DapE's are essential for cell growth and proliferation. Since there are no similar pathways in humans, inhibitors …

Confirming 18s Rdna Polymorphism Among Helicosporidium Isolates Using Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (Rflp) Analysis, Stephanie Liu
Undergraduate Student Symposium
The non-photosynthetic pathogenic algae Helicosporidium show promising potential as a form of biological control against mosquito larvae. By studying the life cycle and modes of transmission of Helicosporidium, more can be determined about their potential effectiveness as a natural pest control agent. Isolates of Helicosporidium DNA collected from different invertebrate hosts (black fly, weevil, bark beetle, mosquito, and collembola) were predicted to have unique phylotypes. To confirm these differences, Helicosporidium 18S rDNA genes were amplified via Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and purified using the QIAGEN PCR purification kit. The DNA fragments were digested using the restriction enzyme Fok1, and …

Changes In Coral Cover (Diaseris Distorta And Porites Sverdrupi) At Isla Catalana, Gulf Of California, Mexico, Mary Crider
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Diaseris distorta is a free-living, solitary fungiid coral that occupies sand and mud habitats throughout the tropical waters of the Red Sea, Indian and Pacific Oceans. However, there is little data on their biology and ecology, particularly in the widely scattered and small Eastern Pacific populations. Information about the status of these coral populations will help determine if protection is warranted for this important resource. On two dates (June 2008, November 2009), population density, mean size, and total live tissue surface area were documented off the coast of Isla Catalana in the Gulf of California, which is the northern-most limit …

Models have a wide array of real life applications ranging from engineering to economics. In biological science, it is a biologist's aim to give verifiable predictions. This is where they use Mathematics as a technique to aid their discoveries. This study observes two Mathematical models that will give a representation of some aspect of real world phenomena. In effect, these models are simplified versions of systems that are well known. In order to create a Mathematical model, the assumptions on which the model will be based must be stated. These assumptions will describe the relationships among the quantities to be …
