An Exploration Of The Social Construction Of Race And Racial Identity : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Elizabeth Castrellon
An Exploration Of The Social Construction Of Race And Racial Identity : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Elizabeth Castrellon
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study explored the social construction of race and racial identity through the lens of Queer Theory and Narrative Theory. Although the concept of race is understood as a social construct, research literature shows that this concept is complex and that there are many factors that contribute to the social construction of race in a way that has real life consequences for people. The use of Queer Theory and Narrative Theory to examine this social construct provides a broader base of understanding for clinical applications. The researcher provides recommendations for social workers in their work with diverse populations.

The Power Of Relationships : Long-Term Outcomes For Older Adults With A History Of Interpersonal Trauma : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Miriam Lasden Elwell
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The research question of this theoretical thesis was to examine the manifestation of prior trauma in the older adult population. Previous research focused mainly on interpersonal trauma theory. The literature on elders who were survivors of childhood interpersonal trauma was minimal. The experiences of older adults who have a history of interpersonal trauma were further examined through attachment theory and Relationalcultural theory. Attachment theory speaks to the difficultly of a child exposed to prolonged interpersonal trauma to develop an adaptive method to regulate affect and seek help from others when distressed. These experiences later influence the relational capabilities of the …

Bed Bug Deterrence, Kenneth F. Haynes, Mark H. Goodman, Michael F. Potter
Entomology Faculty Publications
A recent study in BMC Biology has determined that the immature stage of the bed bug (the nymph) signals its reproductive status to adult males using pheromones and thus avoids the trauma associated with copulation in this species. The success of this nymphal strategy of deterrence is instructive. Against the background of increasing problems with bed bugs, this research raises the question whether pheromones might be used to control them.

Do Social Isolation And Depression Affect Rates Of Hospital Readmission For Patients With Heart Failure?, Irma Samaniego
Do Social Isolation And Depression Affect Rates Of Hospital Readmission For Patients With Heart Failure?, Irma Samaniego
Nursing ETDs
Heart failure (HF) is a syndrome that primarily affects the aged and is the most common hospital discharge diagnosis for adults in the United States. Readmission is common following discharge from an acute hospital stay for HF. Patients with HF suffer more depressive morbidity than other patients with cardiovascular disease, and many age 65 or older experience social isolation. This prospective exploratory study examined whether readmission within 30 to 60 days of discharge from an index hospitalization for HF was associated with depressive symptoms or social isolation. A convenience sample of 101 patients participated during an index hospitalization for HF. …

Remote Sensing Assessment Of Rapidly Changing Lake Areas In Semi-Arid Closed Basins : Modern Playa Lake Response To Meteorological Variability And Implications For Pluvial Lake Palomas Holocene Highstands, Christine K. Laudadio
Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
Closed basin lakes provide important data on paleo- and modern environmental conditions because of their sensitivity to climate variability, particularly variations in precipitation. In arid and semi-arid regions throughout the world, playas play an important role in biological communities, agriculture, and as a major dust source when they are dry. The ability to monitor these lakes at a high temporal resolution is critical to understanding their response to climate variability as well as improving our interpretation of their paleoenvironmental record, yet such monitoring is currently conducted on few playas. There are several challenges to effectively monitoring playa systems, but the …

Review of the literature and recently available field notes from the collector of the type allows a reconsideration of the identity of the Linnaean name Rana typhonia. We provide evidence to demonstrate that the Linnaean species is neither a bufonid nor an Asiatic ranid, but a Neotropical hylid. Subsequently, we consider Rana typhonia as an older synonym of Rana venulosa Laurenti, 1768, redescribing its holotype under the new combination, Trachycephalus typhonius (Linnaeus, 1758).
Model Electrode Structures For Studies Of Electrocatalyst Degradation, Ronald Goeke
Model Electrode Structures For Studies Of Electrocatalyst Degradation, Ronald Goeke
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are being extensively studied as power sources because of their technological advantages such as high energy efficiency, high energy and power densities, environmental friendliness, low noise, rapid refueling, and fuel flexibility. The most effective catalyst in these systems consists of nanoparticles of Pt or Pt-based alloys on carbon supports. Understanding the role of the nanoparticle size and structure on the catalytic activity and degradation is needed to optimize the fuel cell performance and reduce the noble metal loading. Electrocatalyst degradation is believed to occur by four mechanisms; particle sintering (Ostwald ripening and migration and …

The Benefits Of Contaminated Site Cleanup Revisited: The Case Of Naples And Caserta, Italy, Anna Alberini, Milan Ščasný, Dennis Guignet, Stefania Tonin
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Guerriero and Cairns (2009) recently estimate that contaminated sites and improper waste management result in 848 excess deaths per year in the provinces of Naples and Caserta in Southern Italy, 403 of which are fatal cancers. In the absence of estimates of the Value of a Prevented Fatality (VPF) in Italy or specific to the hazardous waste context, they use figures recommended by DG-Environment. Contrary to their claims, estimates of the VPF are available for Italy that are specific to the hazardous waste context, and for causes of death that have been linked to contaminated site exposures. We review them …
Job Instability And Family Planning: Insights From The Italian Puzzle, Fabio Sabatini
Job Instability And Family Planning: Insights From The Italian Puzzle, Fabio Sabatini
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper carries out an investigation into the socio-economic determinants of couples’ childbearing decisions in Italy. Since having children is in most cases a “couple matter”, the analysis accounts for the characteristics of both the possible parents. Our results do not support established theoretical predictions according to which the increase in the opportunity cost of motherhood connected to higher female labour participation is responsible for the fall in fertility. On the contrary, the instability of the women’s work status (i.e. their being occasional, precarious, and low-paid workers) reveals to be a significant dissuasive deterrent discouraging the decision to have children. …
On Two-Stage Hypothesis Testing Procedures Via Asymptotically Independent Statistics, James Dai, Charles Kooperberg, Michael L. Leblanc, Ross Prentice
On Two-Stage Hypothesis Testing Procedures Via Asymptotically Independent Statistics, James Dai, Charles Kooperberg, Michael L. Leblanc, Ross Prentice
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Kooperberg and LeBlanc (2008) proposed a two-stage testing procedure to screen for significant interactions in genome-wide association (GWA) studies by a soft threshold on marginal associations (MA), though its theoretical properties and generalization have not been elaborated. In this article, we discuss conditions that are required to achieve strong control of the Family-Wise Error Rate (FWER) by such procedures for low or high-dimensional hypothesis testing. We provide proof of asymptotic independence of marginal association statistics and interaction statistics in linear regression, logistic regression, and Cox proportional hazard models in a randomized clinical trial (RCT) with a rare event. In case-control …

The Anchor: 2010
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
Reduced brain levels of docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3), a neurotrophic and neuroprotective fatty acid, may contribute to cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease. Here, we investigated whether the liver enzyme system that provides docosahexaenoic acid to the brain is dysfunctional in this disease. Docosahexaenoic acid levels were reduced in temporal cortex, mid-frontal cortex and cerebellum of subjects with Alzheimer's disease, compared to control subjects (P = 0.007). Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores positively correlated with docosahexaenoic/α-linolenic ratios in temporal cortex (P = 0.005) and mid-frontal cortex (P = 0.018), but not cerebellum. Similarly, liver docosahexaenoic acid content was lower in Alzheimer's …

To fabricate quantum dot arrays with programmable periodicity, functionalized DNA origami nanotubes were developed. Selected DNA staple strands were biotin-labeled to form periodic binding sites for streptavidin-conjugated quantum dots. Successful formation of arrays with periods of 43 and 71 nm demonstrates precise, programmable, large-scale nanoparticle patterning; however, limitations in array periodicity were also observed. Statistical analysis of AFM images revealed evidence for steric hindrance or site bridging that limited the minimum array periodicity.

Growth And Characterization Of Epitaxial Thin Films And Multiferroic Heterostructures Of Ferromagnetic And Ferroelectric Materials, Devajyoti Mukherjee
Growth And Characterization Of Epitaxial Thin Films And Multiferroic Heterostructures Of Ferromagnetic And Ferroelectric Materials, Devajyoti Mukherjee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Multiferroic materials exhibit unique properties such as simultaneous existence of
two or more of coupled ferroic order parameters (ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity,
ferroelasticity or their anti-ferroic counterparts) in a single material. Recent years have
seen a huge research interest in multiferroic materials for their potential application as
high density non-volatile memory devices. However, the scarcity of these materials in
single phase and the weak coupling of their ferroic components have directed the
research towards multiferroic heterostructures. These systems operate by coupling the
magnetic and electric properties of two materials, generally a ferromagnetic material and
a ferroelectric material via strain. In this work, …

Community-Based Adaptation: Lessons From The Development Marketplace 2009 On Adaptation To Climate Change, Rasmus Heltberg, Radhika Prabhu, Habiba Gitay
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
The Development Marketplace 2009 focused on adaptation to climate change. This paper identifies lessons from the Marketplace and assesses their implications for adaptation support. Our findings are based on: statistical tabulation of all proposals; in-depth qualitative and quantitative analysis of the 346 semi-finalists; and interviews with finalists and assessors. Proposals were fuelled by deep concerns that ongoing climate change and its impacts undermine development and exacerbate poverty, migration and food insecurity. Proposals addressed both local poverty and climate change challenges, and offered a wide range of approaches to render local development more resilient to current climate variability. Therefore, support to …
