Re-Envisaging Erikson : Deconstructing Adoption Through The Case Of Claire : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Alison M. Armstrong Sep 2010

Re-Envisaging Erikson : Deconstructing Adoption Through The Case Of Claire : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Alison M. Armstrong

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study explored the social construction of adoption present within North American discourse and how this has impacted subsequent theoretical understandings of adoptee development. This was done with a particular emphasis on Eriksonian theories of adoptee development. This study utilized a cultural artifact, namely the character of Claire in Tim Kring's (2006) television show, Heroes. Claire's case is then used to compare current uses of Eriksonian theories of psychosocial ego development with possible, more comprehensive iterations of Erikson's theory. The impact and relevance to social work theory, research and practice are discussed.

This study asked the following research questions: What is your experience as a clinician working with elders who have dementia? As a clinician, what is your understanding of trigger events? How do you incorporate the knowledge of triggers into your therapeutic process? Tell me about the types of events that you have found that trigger elderly onset of dementia: medical? Trauma? Etc? What specific techniques have you found helpful in …

Two Methods To Detect Clonal Populations Of Human Cells In Situ, Philip Scorza Hall Sep 2010

Two Methods To Detect Clonal Populations Of Human Cells In Situ, Philip Scorza Hall

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

TWO METHODS TO DETECT CLONAL POPULATIONS OF HUMAN CELLS IN SITU. Philip Hall, Jonathan Murphy, and Jeffrey Sklar, Department of Pathology, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. A molecular assay to detect clonal populations of human cells in situ would be potentially valuable for both investigational and diagnostic purposes. Two such methods are proposed, both utilizing fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The first relies upon random monoallelic expression of genes (so-called allelic exclusion), in which a subset of human genes are normally expressed at a single allele in a fixed fraction of cells within a tissue, independent of …

Field-Structured Chemiresistors : Tunable Sensors For Chemical-Switch Arrays, Douglas Read Sep 2010

Field-Structured Chemiresistors : Tunable Sensors For Chemical-Switch Arrays, Douglas Read

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

We have developed a significantly improved composite material for applications to chemiresistors, which are resistance-based sensors for volatile organic compounds. This material is a polymer composite containing Au-coated magnetic particles organized into electrically conducting pathways by magnetic fields. This improved material overcomes the various problems inherent to conventional carbon-black chemiresistors, while achieving an unprecedented magnitude of response. When exposed to chemical vapors, the polymer swells only slightly, yet this is amplified into large, reversible resistance changes—as much as 9 decades at a swelling of only 1.5 %. These conductor-insulator transitions occur over such a narrow range of analyte vapor concentration …

Sintering Of Metal Nanoparticles On Model Substrates, Levi R. Houk Sep 2010

Sintering Of Metal Nanoparticles On Model Substrates, Levi R. Houk

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

The sintering of precious metal catalysts is an important problem for the automotive and chemical process industry. As these precious metal catalysts sinter, the metal nanoparticles grow, which in return causes a loss in the overall surface area from loss of the number of available reaction sites. At high temperatures, sintering as a thermally activated process occurs more rapidly and the energetics of the sample changes. In automotive catalysis, for the catalytic converter, the exhaust gases from automobiles contain carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide compounds, and other hydrogen compounds, which are detrimental to the atmosphere, and a catalyst is required to …

Longitudinal Penalized Functional Regression, Jeff Goldsmith, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Brian Caffo, Daniel Reich Sep 2010

Longitudinal Penalized Functional Regression, Jeff Goldsmith, Ciprian M. Crainiceanu, Brian Caffo, Daniel Reich

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

We propose a new regression model and inferential tools for the case when both the outcome and the functional exposures are observed at multiple visits. This data structure is new but increasingly present in applications where functions or images are recorded at multiple times. This raises new inferential challenges that cannot be addressed with current methods and software. Our proposed model generalizes the Generalized Linear Mixed Effects Model (GLMM) by adding functional predictors. Smoothness of the functional coefficients is ensured using roughness penalties estimated by Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) in a corresponding mixed effects model. This method is computationally feasible …

Does Clinical Distress Impact Attempts To Moderate In Problem Drinkers? : Analysis Of Outcomes From A Randomized Clinical Trial, William Campbell

Psychology ETDs

This study examined the relationship between participants level of psychological distress and their attempts to control their problematic alcohol consumption in a randomized clinical trial comparing two web-based Behavioral Self-Control Training (BSCT) interventions. Potential participants in the trial were screened for both severe mental illness and symptoms of alcohol dependence. Based on prevailing theories, as well as research on individuals diagnosed with co-morbid anxious or mood disorders with alcohol use disorders, it was hypothesized that participants reporting higher levels of clinical distress would have worse outcomes. However, the results of this trial demonstrated that participants reporting higher levels of clinical …

Analysis Of Alternative Methods For Long-Term Wind Speed And Initial Site Assessment For Purposes Of Wind Energy Production Estimation, Ryan Mcdevitt Sep 2010

Analysis Of Alternative Methods For Long-Term Wind Speed And Initial Site Assessment For Purposes Of Wind Energy Production Estimation, Ryan Mcdevitt

Theses and Dissertations

A need exists for identification and evaluation of viable sites for wind energy. However, this is made difficult by the site-specific nature of the wind. A review of current industry practices shows that linear regression is the preferred method, although little work has been done to investigate alternative approaches. To address this, various methods were tested on 23 target sites with data measured over a long-term period. Each site was analyzed with the chosen best reference station, across 10 data periods for each method with results classified as mean absolute percentage error in energy density between the projected and measured …

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Currently, there is a scarcity of comprehensive research that has addressed the experiences and service needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth who enter public and private out-of-home care settings. However, existing literature has illustrated significant experiences of discrimination and victimization related to the sexual identity, gender identity, and/or gender expression of these youth from both caregivers and peers in public out-of-home care settings. The purpose of this study is to critically examine the impact of dominant discourse or "master narratives" of LGBTQ identity development on the lives of those youth who enter out-of-home care settings. Recent …

An Exploration Of The Social Construction Of Race And Racial Identity : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Elizabeth Castrellon Sep 2010

An Exploration Of The Social Construction Of Race And Racial Identity : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Elizabeth Castrellon

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study explored the social construction of race and racial identity through the lens of Queer Theory and Narrative Theory. Although the concept of race is understood as a social construct, research literature shows that this concept is complex and that there are many factors that contribute to the social construction of race in a way that has real life consequences for people. The use of Queer Theory and Narrative Theory to examine this social construct provides a broader base of understanding for clinical applications. The researcher provides recommendations for social workers in their work with diverse populations.

The Power Of Relationships : Long-Term Outcomes For Older Adults With A History Of Interpersonal Trauma : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Miriam Lasden Elwell Sep 2010

The Power Of Relationships : Long-Term Outcomes For Older Adults With A History Of Interpersonal Trauma : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Miriam Lasden Elwell

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The research question of this theoretical thesis was to examine the manifestation of prior trauma in the older adult population. Previous research focused mainly on interpersonal trauma theory. The literature on elders who were survivors of childhood interpersonal trauma was minimal. The experiences of older adults who have a history of interpersonal trauma were further examined through attachment theory and Relationalcultural theory. Attachment theory speaks to the difficultly of a child exposed to prolonged interpersonal trauma to develop an adaptive method to regulate affect and seek help from others when distressed. These experiences later influence the relational capabilities of the …
