Characterizing The Advanced Glycation Endproducts Formation Of Proteins And Nucleotides By Methylglyoxal And Glyoxal, Praveen Kumar Pampati Jan 2010

Characterizing The Advanced Glycation Endproducts Formation Of Proteins And Nucleotides By Methylglyoxal And Glyoxal, Praveen Kumar Pampati

Open Access Dissertations

Advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) are a heterogeneous group of molecules formed from the nonenzymatic reaction of reducing sugars with free amino groups of proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. The initial product of this reaction is called a Schiff base, which rearranges itself into an Amadori or glycation product which can further rearrange to AGEs. The reaction is called Maillard reaction and is the basis for all protein glycation studies. AGEs accumulate in tissues and associate with the pathology of various diseases like Diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, renal failure, aging, etc. Methylglyoxal, 3-Deoxyglucosone and glyoxal (oxoaldehydes or α-dicarbonyls) have recently been proposed …

Trophoblasts And Endothelial Cells In Pregnancy-Associated Vascularization, Satyan Kalkunte Jan 2010

Trophoblasts And Endothelial Cells In Pregnancy-Associated Vascularization, Satyan Kalkunte

Open Access Dissertations

Dysregulated uteroplacental interaction and vascular remodeling are thought to be associated with the molecular events in preeclampsia. Due to the co-onset of maternal symptoms and placental pathology, we hypothesize that serum from preeclampsia patients could provide a "blueprint" of etiologic factors. To substantiate the hypothesis, a novel three dimensional dual cell culture in vitro model, a mimic of the vascular remodeling events during pregnancy, was established. In this model, unlike term trophoblasts, first trimester trophoblasts engage in a dynamic cross-talk and synchronize with the endothelial cells in a capillary network. Mechanistic studies indicate that poor expression of VEGF C and …

Unasked (And Unanswered) Questions About The Role Of Neuroimaging In The Criminal Trial Process, Michael L. Perlin, Valerie Mcclain Jan 2010

Unasked (And Unanswered) Questions About The Role Of Neuroimaging In The Criminal Trial Process, Michael L. Perlin, Valerie Mcclain

Articles & Chapters

The robust neuroimaging debate has dealt mostly with philosophical questions about free will, responsibility, and the relationship between brain abnormalities, violence and crime. This debate, however, obscures several important issues of criminal procedure to which little attention has as of yet been paid: 1) an indigent defendant's right of access to expert testimony in cases where neuroimaging tests might be critical, 2) a defendant's competency to consent to the imposition of a neuroimaging test; and 3) the impact of antipsychotic medications on a defendant's brain at the time that such a test is performed. This article will consider these questions …

The Bachelor Narrator Motif In The Sketches Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Carol L. Anderson Jan 2010

The Bachelor Narrator Motif In The Sketches Of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Carol L. Anderson

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis examines the bachelor narrator motif in seven of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s sketches, published between 1831 and 1843. Hawthorne’s narrators are artists, alienated from society in general, and from women in particular. Moreover, they are modeled upon the figure of the European flaneur, the idle ‘man about town’ who believes he can read the character of the stranger in the crowd. In these first person narrations, Hawthorne explores the problems of subjectivity (involving self-concept, including the split between the conscious and the unconscious, and the gap between the mind and the material world) and the problem of knowledge (involving the …

Gods As Parental Figures In Euripides’ Alcestis, Hippolytus, Iphigenia In Aulis And Tauris, Valbone Dushaj Jan 2010

Gods As Parental Figures In Euripides’ Alcestis, Hippolytus, Iphigenia In Aulis And Tauris, Valbone Dushaj

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The relationship between father and child seems to be a tumultuous one in the Greek tragedies, particularly in Euripidean tragedy. Father and child frequently do not have a loving and unrestrained relationship, but rather a distant, stoic bond void of communication. In Alcestis (438 B.C.), Hippolytus (428 B.C.), Iphigenia in Aulis (406 B.C.), and Tauris (414-410 B.C.), the children, Admetus, Hippolytus, and Iphigenia, deal with disregard, mistreatment, and abandonment by their fathers, Pheres, Theseus, and Agamemnon. Doomed to die, these children often hold their fathers accountable, indirectly or directly, as murderers in their passing. Even as the unwritten law of …

Purification And Characterization Of A Leishmania Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase : A Potentially New Anti-Parasitic Drug Target, Sailaja Sankabathula Jan 2010

Purification And Characterization Of A Leishmania Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase : A Potentially New Anti-Parasitic Drug Target, Sailaja Sankabathula

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Synthetic inhibitors of the human mitogen activated protein kinase, p38 MAPK may represent a new class of anti-parasitic agents. p38 MAPK inhibitors have been shown to inhibit replication of Toxoplasma gondii (T.gondii), the causative agent of taxoplasmosis, in vitro and in vivo. Inhibition of parasite replication was due to the inhibition of a T.gondii p38 MAPK homolog called tgmapk-1. Other parasites have MAPKs homologous to tgmapk-1 and these MAPKs may represent novel drug targets for new therapeutics in treating parasitic diseases. We have focused on a MAPK from, Leishmania mexicana (L.mexicana), the causative agent for one form of leishmaniasis. The …

Testosterone Fluctuations In Young Men: The Difference Between Interacting With Like And Not-Like Others, M. Catherine Desoto, Robert T. Hitlan, Rory-Sean S. Deol, Derrick Mcadams Jan 2010

Testosterone Fluctuations In Young Men: The Difference Between Interacting With Like And Not-Like Others, M. Catherine Desoto, Robert T. Hitlan, Rory-Sean S. Deol, Derrick Mcadams

Faculty Work

The current study investigated young men's testosterone level changes as a result of interacting with other men. Male participants (n = 84) were led to believe that a group they would be interacting with was either similar to them or not similar. The interaction was then one of two types: the other group members were inclusive, or the others excluded the participant during the group interaction. Participants provided saliva samples before and after the interaction. Results suggest that interacting with highly similar men increases circulating testosterone whereas interacting with highly dissimilar men actually lowers testosterone. The nature of the …

Influence Of Wetland Landscape Structure On Duck Nest Success At Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Oregon, Daniel Robert Craver Jan 2010

Influence Of Wetland Landscape Structure On Duck Nest Success At Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Oregon, Daniel Robert Craver

Geography Masters Research Papers

The decline of waterfowl populations and their requisite wetland habitats remains a concern. Because migratory bird refuges are often artificial landscapes of actively managed wetlands, and wildlife populations experience their greatest change during the breeding season, refuges should be designed to maximize breeding habitat. While past nest success studies have focused on at-nest variables, new approaches are needed to evaluate the effect of composition and configuration of plant communities at the landscape scale. This study aims to quantify landscape patterns within individual refuge management units to determine influence upon historical nesting success averages of ducks at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge …

Imagination And Choice, Anne Dailey Jan 2010

Imagination And Choice, Anne Dailey

Faculty Articles and Papers

Contemporary behavioral legal scholarship on individual decisionmaking draws primarily from cognitive psychology. This Article argues that the field of behavioral legal scholarship should be broadened to include modern psychoanalytic ideas about the processes of individual decisionmaking. As explained here, the basic perspective of psychoanalytic psychology is largely compatible with recent cognitive research on decisionmaking. However, a psychoanalytic perspective adds valuable nuance and complexity by exposing for scholarly examination certain essential attributes of individual decisionmaking that have so far been overlooked. As a first step in bringing modern psychoanalytic ideas to the attention of contemporary behavioral legal scholars, this Article examines …

Electron Beam Lithography Throughput And Resolution Enhancement With Innovative Blanker Design, Junru Ruan Jan 2010

Electron Beam Lithography Throughput And Resolution Enhancement With Innovative Blanker Design, Junru Ruan

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Electron Beam Lithography (EBL) is one of the most important and most widely used methods for nano-fabrication. The primary advantage of electron beam lithography is its high resolution, and its ability to expose nanometer features without a mask. On the other hand, one of the key limitations of electron beam lithography is throughput. Slow blanking speed is one of the major bottlenecks for the system speed. In this dissertation, I will first review the prior literature of high speed blanking. Thorough theoretical and experimental studies are done on the existing designs. Physical models are built and analytical ray tracing is …

A Spline Kernel Based Smoothing Algorithm : A Comparison Of Methods With A Spatiotemporal Application To Global Climate Fluctuations, Derek Daniel Cyr Jan 2010

A Spline Kernel Based Smoothing Algorithm : A Comparison Of Methods With A Spatiotemporal Application To Global Climate Fluctuations, Derek Daniel Cyr

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In statistics, smoothing is a technique that attempts to capture the key patterns or trends in data while leaving out the noise that is obscuring them. Nonparametric techniques are well-suited for smoothing as they do not rely on assumptions that the data arise from a given probability distribution.

The Energetic And Wave Function Properties Of Atomic, Molecular, And Solid State Systems : H⁻ Ion And The Li, Ne, And P Atoms, Bf3·Nh3 Molecular Complex And Methyl Derivatives, V2+, Cr+, Mn2+, Mn0 Transition Metal Impurities In Silicon, Roger H. Pink

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The variational Hartree-Fock-Roothaan (HF) method with correlation corrections introduced through Many Body Perturbation Theory (MBPT) and the variational Density Functional Theory (DFT) have been investigated for atomic systems to provide insights into the strengths and weaknesses of each variational approach to solving the multicenter many-electron Hamiltonian. The HF+MBPT method, having been found to be more reliable and physically relevant from the atomic investigations, is used to investigate the electronic structures and associated properties of the BF3*NH3 molecular complex, and through cluster methods, the most likely locations of the transitional metal impurities V2+, Cr+, Mn2+ and Mn0 in Silicon.

Group Ii Intron Dynamics In Heterologous Hosts, Venkata Raghavendra Aditya Chalamcharla Jan 2010

Group Ii Intron Dynamics In Heterologous Hosts, Venkata Raghavendra Aditya Chalamcharla

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Group II introns are ribozymes with an innate ability to self-splice. They are found predominantly in bacterial and bacterial-derived organellar genomes, but not in the nuclear genomes of eukaryotes. In bacteria, group II introns often behave as mobile retroelements, invading host DNA and exploiting its machinery to complete the retromobility process. The object of my studies is the group II intron found in the Lactococcus lactis relaxase gene. To determine the nature of the group II intron-host relationship, we performed a genetic screen and identified several host factors that affect group II intron retromobility in Escherichia coli, which provides a …

GarifunaduáÜ : Cultural Continuity, Change And Resistance In The Garifuna Diaspora, Boyd Malcolm Servio-Mariano Jan 2010

GarifunaduáÜ : Cultural Continuity, Change And Resistance In The Garifuna Diaspora, Boyd Malcolm Servio-Mariano

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The Garifuna are a diasporic community that positions Yurumein (St. Vincent) at the center of its collective memory, and whose populations primarily reside in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and, more recently, in urban centers in the United States. This multi-sited, historio-ethnographic study traces the group's socio-political struggles over time and space against cultural dislocation, ethnic oppression, and culturally destructive forces. It highlights how this population's core principles and forms, Garifunaduáü ("Garifunaness," or the "Garifuna way"), and particularly its central tenet of reciprocity "Aü bu, amürü nu" (roughly translated as "me for you and you for me"), functions on multiple levels …

Individualized Intimacy? : The Negotiation Of Self And Other In Heterosexual Relationships, Daniel Santore Jan 2010

Individualized Intimacy? : The Negotiation Of Self And Other In Heterosexual Relationships, Daniel Santore

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Sociologists working in various scholarly traditions posit an individualization of contemporary romantic relationships occurring in Western societies over the passed several decades. This dissertation uses North American and European theoretical perspectives on "individualized intimacy" as the basis for a qualitative interview study of 45 women and men involved in heterosexual relationships. In keeping with the theoretical perspectives that ground the study, the interviews focus on how concepts of self-development, communication, gender and social class collide with one another in, and serve to shape, respondents' narratives of self and other in intimacy. Findings demonstrate that: (a) regarding gender, women and men …

Multiethnic Labor Markets And Socioeconomic Mobility : A Career Trajectory Perspective, Jeremy F. Pais Jan 2010

Multiethnic Labor Markets And Socioeconomic Mobility : A Career Trajectory Perspective, Jeremy F. Pais

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In the United States, high rates of immigration have once again raised important questions concerning the effect of ethnic diversity on patterns of socioeconomic mobility and levels of inequality between racial and ethnic groups. However, despite the potential effect of immigration and ethnic diversity on racial and ethnic stratification within multiethnic societies, research has yet to provide an examination of the impact of these factors on patterns of social mobility over the life course. While prior research focuses extensively on metropolitan area characteristics related to contemporaneous race and ethnic labor market disparities, the primary contribution of this research is to …

Bilingual Visual Culture In New York : Socially-Engaged Latina Artists And The Discourse Of Hybridity, Solmerina Aponte Jan 2010

Bilingual Visual Culture In New York : Socially-Engaged Latina Artists And The Discourse Of Hybridity, Solmerina Aponte

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the aesthetic visual discourse of hybridity manifested in the works of contemporary socially-engaged Latina artists of the New York diaspora. For Latin America and the Caribbean, regions where sociopolitical history has generally exhibited a tumultuous trajectory, the arts have provided a formidable venue for addressing the social concerns engendered by this turbulent history and for studying the creative ways in which artists interpret them. The symbiotic bond created between art and politics would become a cultural force and tradition in the history of struggle that characterizes the countries that are part of …

Do You See What I See? : Testing The Effects Of Race And Social Class On Therapists' Recognition Of And Attributions For Intimate Partner Violence, Susana Blanco Jan 2010

Do You See What I See? : Testing The Effects Of Race And Social Class On Therapists' Recognition Of And Attributions For Intimate Partner Violence, Susana Blanco

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

An estimated 5.3 million intimate partner violence (IPV) victimizations occur among U.S. women each year (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008). Because of the high prevalence, Harway and Hansen (2004) recommended that therapists assume that all women presenting for therapy may be at risk for violence. However, assessment for IPV is not standard practice. In fact, studies repeatedly indicate that therapists tend to under-identify IPV (e.g., Harway & Hansen, 1993).

The Alliinase And Lachrymatory Factor Synthase Systems In Petiveria Alliacea, Quan He Jan 2010

The Alliinase And Lachrymatory Factor Synthase Systems In Petiveria Alliacea, Quan He

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Isolation and characterization of an alliinase and a lachrymatory factor synthase from the Amazonian medicinal plant Petiveria alliacea is reported. The alliinase is unusual in that it is heteromeric, whereas all previous reports of characterized alliinases have shown them to be monomers or homomultimers. The protein possesses 5 subunits: two alpha subunits which are glycosylated and connected by a disulfide bond, and beta, gamma and delta subunits. The alliinase exhibits broad substrate specificity, reacting with S-substituted-L-cysteine sulfoxides with aromatic, aliphatic, alkenyl and polar side chains. The alliinase-mediated breakdown of a variety of cysteine sulfoxide derivatives yields transitory sulfenic acid intermediate …

Effects Of Early Developmental Stress On Adult Physiology And Behavior, Michael James Frederick Jan 2010

Effects Of Early Developmental Stress On Adult Physiology And Behavior, Michael James Frederick

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Events during early development can have long-term effects on physiology and behavior. While extreme developmental stress is known to be associated with a variety of behavioral problems, it is less well understood how milder stress may affect behavior, personality, and reproductive success. This research project assessed a variety of behavioral dimensions in a college age sample, while assessing early development using size at birth, fluctuating asymmetry, and retrospective surveys. Maternal stress during pregnancy was found to reduce adolescent growth spurts and adult handgrip strength in the offspring. In males, lower birth weights were associated with higher scores of impulsivity and …

Biological And Behavioral Correlates Among Young Adults Exposed To Harsh Parenting Practices, Christy Lyn Olezeski Jan 2010

Biological And Behavioral Correlates Among Young Adults Exposed To Harsh Parenting Practices, Christy Lyn Olezeski

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Whereas the subject of harsh parenting has been a source of debate for many years, research has shown that harsh parenting practices are associated with an increase in behavioral problems, including aggression toward others. However, not all youth who have been subjected to harsh parenting develop problems. Researchers have begun examining moderators of the effects of harsh parenting and other psychosocial stressors, specifically whether functioning in physiological stress response systems buffers or exacerbates the effects of harsh parenting on later functioning. Research also suggests that exposure to stressful situations (including harsh parenting) may affect the biological stress system. In particular, …
