Un Peacekeeping: A Sheep In Wolves Clothing? Review Of Un Peacekeeping In Lebanon, Somalia And Kosovo: Operational And Legal Issues In Practice, Jeremy I. Levitt

Journal Publications

Scholars and practitioners have been debating the legal and operational aspects of UN military operations since its enforcement actions in North Korea in 1950 and the Congo in 1960 (UN Operation in the Congo [ONUC]). Since then, the UN Security Council (UNSC) has authorized some semblance of enforcement action in Kuwait, Somalia, the former Yugoslavia, Kosovo, East Timor and Albania, and authorized, sanctioned or co-deployed forces in Liberia, Sierra Leone, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Coˆte d’Ivoire and Sudan. The scholarly literature is abundant with analysis of nearly every aspect of peacekeeping and peace enforcement …

Trust And Trustworthiness: A Framework For Successful Design Of Telemedicine, James Robert Templeton Jan 2010

Trust And Trustworthiness: A Framework For Successful Design Of Telemedicine, James Robert Templeton

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Trust and its antecedents have been demonstrated as a barrier to the successful adoption of numerous fields of technology, most notably e-commerce, and may be a key factor in the lack of adoption or adaptation in the field of telemedicine. In the medical arena, trust is often formed through the relationships cultivated over time via clinician and patient. Trust and interpersonal relationships may also play a significant role in the adoption of telemedicine. The idea of telemedicine has been explored for nearly 30 years in one form or another. Yet, despite grandiose promises of how it will someday significantly improve …

Why Does This Always Happen To Us? An Examination Of Co-Rumination In The Same Sex Friendships Of Emerging Adults, Teresa Michelle Preddy Jan 2010

Why Does This Always Happen To Us? An Examination Of Co-Rumination In The Same Sex Friendships Of Emerging Adults, Teresa Michelle Preddy

Master's Theses

Co-rumination, which has been defined as a passive, repetitive form of problem discussion, has been linked to both benefits in terms of positive friendship quality and maladaptive outcomes such as internalizing distress. This study explored the trade-offs associated with co-rumination in emerging adult same-sex friendships both concurrently and longitudinally through the use of self-report questionnaires. Co-rumination was associated with concurrent positive friendship quality. Additionally, co-rumination partially mediated the link between gender and positive friendship quality, and was a marginal predictor of increases in positive friendship quality over time. Although co-rumination was associated with depression, co-rumination did not predict depressive symptoms …

Structural And Functional Divergence Of A 1-Mb Duplicated Region In The Soybean (Glycine Max) Genome And Comparison To An Orthologous Region From Phaseolus Vulgaris, Jer-Young Lin, Robert M. Stupar, Christian Hans, D. L. Hyten, Scott A. Jackson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Soybean (Glycine max) has undergone at least two rounds of polyploidization, resulting in a paleopolyploid genome that is a mosaic of homoeologous regions. To determine the structural and functional impact of these duplications, we sequenced two ~1-Mb homoeologous regions of soybean, Gm8 and Gm15, derived from the most recent ~13 million year duplication event and the orthologous region from common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), Pv5. We observed inversions leading to major structural variation and a bias between the two chromosome segments as Gm15 experienced more gene movement (gene retention rate of 81% in Gm15 versus 91% in …

Dopamine D1 Receptor-Mediated Nmda Receptor Insertion Depends On Fyn But Not Src Kinase Pathway In Prefrontal Cortical Neurons, Jian-Li Hu, Gang Liu, Yan-Chun Li, Wen-Jun Gao, Yueqiao Huang

PCOM Scholarly Works

Background. Interactions between dopamine and glutamate in the prefrontal cortex are essential for cognitive functions such as working memory. Modulation of N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor functions by dopamine D1 receptor is believed to play a critical role in these functions. The aim of the work reported here is to explore the signaling pathway underlying D1 receptor-mediated trafficking of NMDA receptors in cultured rat prefrontal cortical neurons. Results. Activation of D1 receptor by selective agonist SKF-81297 significantly increased the expression of NR2B subunits. This effect was completely blocked by small interfering RNA knockdown of Fyn, but not Src. Under control conditions, …

Ovule Ontogenesis And Megagametophyte Development In Onobrychis Schahuensis Bornm. (Fabaceae), Abdolkarim Chehregani, Nayereh Tanomi

Turkish Journal of Botany

The ovule ontogenesis and the megasporogenesis events in Onobrychis schahuensis Bornm. were studied with light microscopy. The primordium is tetra-zonate and gives rise to an anatropous ovule. The archesporium may consist of one or more archesporial cells, but only one of them undergoes meiosis, forming a linear shaped tetrad. Normally, only a single megaspore is functional, which is located in the chalazal position, while the others degenerate very soon. The young ovule is hemianatropous but the mature one is anatropous, crassinucellar, and bitegmic; integuments form a zig-zag micropyle. A 7-celled embryo-sac is formed corresponding to the Polygonum type. The present …

Asynchronous Particle Swarm Optimization-Based Search With A Multi-Robot System: Simulation And Implementation On A Real Robotic System, Sali̇h Burak Akat, Veysel Gazi̇, Lino Marques

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this article we consider a version of the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm which is appropriate for search tasks of multi-agent systems consisting of small robots with limited sensing capability. The proposed method adopts asynchronous mechanism for information exchange and position (way point) updates of the agents. Moreover, at each (information exchange) step the agents communicate with only a possibly different subset of the other agents leading to a dynamic neighborhood topology. We implement the algorithm using the Player/Stage realistic robot simulator as well as on real KheperaIII robots using experimentally collected realistic data of ethanol gas concentration. Simulation …

Zinc Alleviates Salt Stress And Increases Antioxidant Enzyme Activity In The Leaves Of Pistachio (Pistacia Vera L. ‘Badami’) Seedlings, Vahid Tavallali, Majid Rahemi, Saeed Eshghi, Bahman Kholdebarin, Asghar Ramezanian Jan 2010

Zinc Alleviates Salt Stress And Increases Antioxidant Enzyme Activity In The Leaves Of Pistachio (Pistacia Vera L. ‘Badami’) Seedlings, Vahid Tavallali, Majid Rahemi, Saeed Eshghi, Bahman Kholdebarin, Asghar Ramezanian

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The mechanism(s) by which Zn alleviates NaCl stress was investigated in Pistacia vera L. 'Badami'. Pistachio seedlings were treated with 0, 800, 1600, 2400, and 3200 mg of NaCl kg^{-1} of soil, along with Zn (0, 5, 10, and 20 mg kg^{-1} of soil). NaCl stress induced high oxidative stress, increasing lipid peroxidation, electrolyte leakage, and lipoxygenase (LOX, E.C. 1.13.11.12) activity to high levels. Zn supplement efficiently reduced all these adverse effects of salt stress. However, there were no significant differences among the above parameters in plants treated with Zn only. NaCl stress significantly increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes. …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins (PGIP) play important roles in the defense against plant pathogens, especially fungi. The sequence of strawberry PGIP gene was obtained using reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) and its expression in different tissues was studied by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. A cDNA fragment of FaPGIP gene was cloned and the sequence analysis shows that the fragment contains a full ORF of 999 bp encoding 332 amino acids. The FaPGIP gene from genomic DNA shows a single 168bp intron that is efficiently spliced out of the FaPGIP pre-mRNA transcript. The FaPGIP has a high degree of identity with previously isolated PGIP genes and …

From A Constitutional Right To A Policy Of Exceptions: Abigail Alliance And The Future Of Access To Experimental Therapy, Patricia J. Zettler, Seema K. Shah

Faculty Publications By Year

Although there has been considerable attention to the plight of terminally ill patients with highly sympathetic constitutional and contractual claims that they should be permitted access to unapproved drugs, courts have been appropriately reluctant to grant such claims. Congress and administrative agencies have the requisite institutional competence to decide complex policy issues related to science and health care such as those involved in establishing an expanded access program. Congress and FDA should allow only limited access to unapproved therapies because there are significant concerns about the safety and efficacy of unapproved drugs. Moreover, many of the proposals to widen access …

Does Twenty-Five Years Make A Difference In “Unequal Treatment”?: The Persistence Of Racial Disparities In Health Care Then And Now, Ruqaiijah A. Yearby

All Faculty Scholarship

In 1985, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Services (HHS) issued a landmark report that exposed the persistence of racial disparities in the U.S. healthcare system. Unfortunately, twenty-five years later, racial disparities in healthcare continue to persist. For example, since 1985, more African-Americans have died from coronary disease, breast cancer, and diabetes than Caucasians, even though more Caucasians suffer from these diseases than African-Americans. Notwithstanding their increased mortality rates, African Americans “have a statistically significantly lower mean number of annual ambulatory [walk-in] visits and are less likely to have seen a physician in [any given] year.” Studies …

Biology And Ecology Of European Natural Enemies Of Swallow-Worts (Vincetoxicum) And The Potential For Biological Control, Aaron Scott Weed

Open Access Dissertations

A biological control program was initiated against two European swallow-worts in North America to minimize their negative effects on native flora and fauna. In manuscript one, populations of Vincetoxicum spp. were surveyed for insect herbivores across Europe to locate new biological control agents and examine herbivore-plant associations. In laboratory studies, larval performance of all herbivores was generally better on the target weeds than V. hirundinaria and are promising as biological control agents. In manuscript two, the preliminary host specificity of H. opulenta was evaluated in quarantine against 34 species. Larvae only completed development on Vincetoxicum although partial larval development occurred …

Spatial Patterns Of The Humpback Whale (Megaptera Novaeangliae) And Its Summer Habitat In The North Atlantic Ocean, Kathleen J. Vigness-Raposa Jan 2010

Spatial Patterns Of The Humpback Whale (Megaptera Novaeangliae) And Its Summer Habitat In The North Atlantic Ocean, Kathleen J. Vigness-Raposa

Open Access Dissertations

The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is found in all oceans of the world, migrating between low-latitude breeding grounds in the winter and high-latitude feeding grounds in the summer. In addition to these broad-scale spatial patterns, individuals in the North Atlantic Ocean exhibit fine-scale site fidelity, with median re-sighting distances of less than 40 km in consecutive years. Because they occur close to coasts and demonstrate a predictable distribution, humpback whales are particularly susceptible to disturbance from human activities. A clear understanding of the geographic pattern of summer sightings, along with the environmental features that characterize areas of concentrated distribution, could …

Structure-Function Studies Of Protein Tyrosine Kinases: Regulation And Substrate Specificity, Kezhen Huang Jan 2010

Structure-Function Studies Of Protein Tyrosine Kinases: Regulation And Substrate Specificity, Kezhen Huang

Open Access Dissertations

Protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) are a large family of enzymes that play critical roles in signal transduction. Through transferring γ-phosphate group from ATP to protein substrates, PTKs regulate functions of these substrates. Due to the utmost importance in signal transduction, malfunction of PTKs usually leads to severe consequences such as cell transformation. Therefore, how PTKs function becomes a focal question in the field of cancer biology. To build a knowledge base for the investigation of specific functions of PTKs, we focused on two major aspects: regulation and substrate specificity. Two general strategies of regulating PTKs have been observed. In the …
