The Influence Of Emotion On Attention : Examining The Processing Of Negative And Positive Emotion Words In The Dot Probe Task, Tina Sutton Jan 2010

The Influence Of Emotion On Attention : Examining The Processing Of Negative And Positive Emotion Words In The Dot Probe Task, Tina Sutton

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The influence of emotion on attention has been examined more closely in recent years using a variety of paradigms. Öhman (1993) suggested that participants more readily pay attention to negative information than neutral information. The current work was designed to expand upon these findings by examining both negative and positive emotion word processing in a non-clinical population using the dot probe task. Experiments 1a and 1b examined the supraliminal and subliminal processing of negative and positive emotion words presented in separate blocks. The results revealed that participants responded faster to the probe when it appeared in the same location as …

Stratifin Is Redundant In Cell Cycle Regulation But Essential For The Translational Control During Skin Development, Fang Liu

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Three phenotypically similar mouse mutations that cause severe defects in skin terminal differentiation have been identified in stratifin (Sfn, also known as 14-3-3σ), I-Kappa Kinase alpha (IKKα) and Interleukin regulatory factor 6 (Irf6). IKKα and Irf6 have been proposed to regulate skin differentiation at the level of transcription. Sfn has been studied intensively as a negative cell cycle regulator during DNA damage response; however, its role in skin development has not been fully characterized.

The aim of this study was to investigate the internal consistency reliability and test-retest reliability of self-reports of depression and anxiety amongst children and adolescents with ASDs. The study used a convenience sample of 31 subjects aged 8 to 17 with a diagnosis of high-functioning autism. Self-reports were administered using the Child Depression …

Homelessness And Stranger-Ness As Critical Potentialities In Early British Novels, Bonghee Oh Jan 2010

Homelessness And Stranger-Ness As Critical Potentialities In Early British Novels, Bonghee Oh

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In its early stages, the British novel generally validates individuals' particularized views of the world, rather than collective ones, and it explores such views in the context of individual's experiences of feeling homeless and of being strangers both within and without the place of home. Broadly conceived, the issues of homelessness and stranger-ness are intimately tied to questions of category, especially regarding the relation between the individual and community, particularity and generality, and the innovative and the traditional in the novel's emergence as a distinct, modern species of writing. By examining the status of orphans and strangers--both in a literal …

The Role Of The Progesterone Receptor In The Development Of The Ventromedial Nucleus And Female Sexual Behaviors, Keith L. Gonzales Jan 2010

The Role Of The Progesterone Receptor In The Development Of The Ventromedial Nucleus And Female Sexual Behaviors, Keith L. Gonzales

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Steroid induced gene transcription plays an important role in neural sex differences within many mammalian species. Steroid hormones actions within the developing brain have profound, permanent effects in the development of neurochemical processes and behaviors. Within the developing ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMN), a potent transcription factor, the progesterone receptor (PR), is highly expressed within female rats. Furthermore, the regulation of PR within the developing VMN of the female rat is anatomically and developmentally specific. Typically, PR expression is highly dependent on the activity of estradiol acting at ERα. As such, circulating levels of estradiol act to induce PR …

Silent Letters : Directions In Late Twentieth Century New Lyric Poetry, Charmaine Gladdie Cadeau Jan 2010

Silent Letters : Directions In Late Twentieth Century New Lyric Poetry, Charmaine Gladdie Cadeau

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Silent Letters: Directions in Late Twentieth Century Poetry consists of three essays that consider modes of silence in the work of North American poets bpNichol, Rosmarie Waldrop, and Mei-mei Berssenbrugge. A poetry manuscript, Place Holder, accompanies these critical chapters, investigating silence in human relationships, landscapes, and language itself. The critical-creative work reframes embodiment by interrogating a poetics of intimacy through ephemerality, dialogue, and encounter.

Assessing Replicated Coral Trace Element (Sr/Ca And Mg/Ca) Variability And Skeletal Growth Records From The Tropical Pacific, Henry Chun-Yi Wu

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

To gain a more complete history and understanding of the full amplitude of climate variability prior to instrumental records, science must rely on natural proxy archives that are sensitive to fluctuations in key climate parameters. Calcium carbonate skeletons of long-living hermatypic corals in some locations have been shown to be natural archives of surface ocean variability. This study investigated the fidelity and reproducibility of coral derived Sr/Ca time series from Clipperton Atoll, Fiji, and Tonga as accurate proxies of sea surface temperature (SST). The replicated high-resolution Sr/Ca time series record monthly and bimonthly SST changes, though with a greater magnitude …

Effect Of Noise In Principal Component Analysis With An Application To Ozone Pollution, Katerina G. Tsakiri Jan 2010

Effect Of Noise In Principal Component Analysis With An Application To Ozone Pollution, Katerina G. Tsakiri

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This thesis analyzes the effect of independent noise in principal components of k normally distributed random variables defined by a covariance matrix. We prove that the principal components as well as the canonical variate pairs determined from joint distribution of original sample affected by noise can be essentially different in comparison with those determined from the original sample. However when the differences between the eigenvalues of the original covariance matrix are sufficiently large compared to the level of the noise, the effect of noise in principal components and canonical variate pairs proved to be negligible. The theoretical results are supported …

Exploring Adult Efl Learners' Language Learning Potential : A Sociocultural Approach, Cagri -. Ozkose-Biyik Jan 2010

Exploring Adult Efl Learners' Language Learning Potential : A Sociocultural Approach, Cagri -. Ozkose-Biyik

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Close scrutiny of the research on language aptitude reveals that it has been considered a quintessentially cognitive construct. No studies, to the researcher's knowledge, have examined language learning ability from a sociocultural perspective. Therefore, this study seeks to reconceptualize the cognitively oriented concept of language aptitude by looking at it through a sociocultural lens. This reconceptualization is achieved first, by reframing language aptitude and offering a new term, language learning potential, and second, by analyzing the dialogic interactions between an EFL teacher (i.e., the author of this dissertation) and two adult learners in a foreign language context in Turkey.

Application Of X-Ray Diffraction To Material Analysis And Medical Imaging, Wei Zhou Jan 2010

Application Of X-Ray Diffraction To Material Analysis And Medical Imaging, Wei Zhou

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Powder diffraction is commonly used to determine the structures of both inorganic and organic materials. The angle and intensity of the diffraction (also called coherent scatter) peak depends on the nanostructure of the material. When no x-ray optic is used, the peak width broadens, and hence the resolution worsens, as the sample area is increased. However, a small sample area gives low diffracted signal intensity, particularly for thin films and for organic materials, which have low diffraction cross sections. X-ray optics can be used in x-ray powder diffraction to increase the diffraction intensity, thus decreasing exposure times. For a small …

Psychosocial Factors Contributing To Medication Non-Adherence, Health-Related Quality Of Life, And Disease Activity In Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Alejandra Halperin Faust

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are chronic and are characterized by periodic exacerbations followed by symptom-free intervals. Symptoms can have a detrimental impact on quality of life. Medication non-adherence in adults with IBD has been well-documented in the literature; continuous medication use is necessary to prevent flares of the disease. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was three-fold: (1) to examine associations between medication non-adherence, disease activity, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL), (2) to examine if group differences were present for patients who were high versus low in anxiety or depression in terms of their medication non-adherence, …

Elucidating The Structure Of Protein Aggregates By Raman Spectroscopy, Ludmila A. Popova Jan 2010

Elucidating The Structure Of Protein Aggregates By Raman Spectroscopy, Ludmila A. Popova

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The structures and properties of amyloid fibrils are of considerable interest due to their associations with numerous neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and transmissible spongiform encephalopaties (prion diseases). Understanding fibrillogenesis at a molecular level requires detailed structural characterization of amyloid fibrils. However amyloid fibrils are difficult objects to study due to their non-crystalline and insoluble nature. These properties make the application of classical tools of structural biology, such as X-Ray crystallography and solution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy, impractical for structural characterization of protein fibrils.

The Use Of Messages In Altering Risky Gambling Behavior In Experienced Gamblers, Bianca Jardin Jan 2010

The Use Of Messages In Altering Risky Gambling Behavior In Experienced Gamblers, Bianca Jardin

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The present study examined a fundamental assumption of a cognitive model of gambling: that gambling-related irrational beliefs are directly associated with risky gambling behavior. A total of 80 high-frequency gamblers played a chance-based computer game with play money. While playing this game, a pop-up screen repeatedly displayed one of four types of messages (accurate, inaccurate, neutral or none). Consistent with a cognitive model of gambling, accurate messages decreased risky gambling behavior compared to the other three message conditions. Contrary to predictions, however, inaccurate messages did not lead to more risky gambling behavior, nor was the hypothesis that participants in the …

Arsenic Speciation Analysis Of Biological Fluids : A Study Of Liquid Chromatography Coupled To Analytical Atomic Spectrometric Instrumentation, Kanna Ito Jan 2010

Arsenic Speciation Analysis Of Biological Fluids : A Study Of Liquid Chromatography Coupled To Analytical Atomic Spectrometric Instrumentation, Kanna Ito

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Arsenic exists as many different chemical forms including inorganic, methylated and dietary species. The toxicity of these species varies: some are highly toxic and can cause adverse health effects in many parts of the body; others are considered relatively non-toxic. Monitoring arsenic exposure is usually accomplished by its direct measurement in biological fluids. Urine is the specimen of choice for assessing arsenic exposure, because of its short biological half-life in blood. There have been very few studies of arsenic species in blood, yet such research can provide valuable information on arsenic distribution and its metabolism in the body.
