Genome Sequencing And Analysis Of The Model Grass Brachypodium Distachyon, John Vogel, David Garvin, Todd C. Mockler, Jeremy Schmutz, Dan Rokhsar, Michael Bevan

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Three subfamilies of grasses, the Ehrhartoideae, Panicoideae and Pooideae, provide the bulk of human nutrition and are poised to become major sources of renewable energy. Here we describe the genome sequence of the wild grass Brachypodium distachyon (Brachypodium), which is, to our knowledge, the first member of the Pooideae subfamily to be sequenced. Comparison of the Brachypodium, rice and sorghum genomes shows a precise history of genome evolution across a broad diversity of the grasses, and establishes a template for analysis of the large genomes of economically important pooid grasses such as wheat. The high-quality genome sequence, coupled …

Psychology Faculty Publications

Chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is a result of a hemizygotic microdeletion that results in a variety of impairments in children including greater risk for psychiatric ailments in adulthood. We used high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging to accurately quantify the length and, for the first time, volume, of the cavum septum pellucidum (CSP) in children aged 7 to 14years with 22q11.2DS and typically developing (TD) controls. Significantly greater anteroposterior length and greater CSP volumes were found in children with 22q11.2DS compared with controls. Furthermore, the largest CSP were found only in the 22q11.2DS group and with a much higher incidence than …

Background

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)–related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is an apoptosis-inducing member of the TNF gene family which triggers apoptotic signals by interaction with its receptors. It has been suggested to be a major contributing factor to tissue degeneration.

Objective

The present study investigated, through immunohistochemistry, the regional expression of TRAIL and in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc of anterior disc displacement with reduction (ADDwR) and without reduction (ADDwoR) patients, to help determine the relationship between TMJ disc displacement and apoptosis.

Study design

We studied 18 TMJ diseased discs affected by disc displacement without or with reduction and 4 normal TMJ …

Gender And Leadership In Egypt's Public Sector: The Case Of The Ministry Of Finance, Ola Gamil El Taliawi Feb 2010

Gender And Leadership In Egypt's Public Sector: The Case Of The Ministry Of Finance, Ola Gamil El Taliawi

Theses and Dissertations

There is a radical difference in the number of males versus females in leading positions around the world, both in public and private business structures. This may reflect an underlying perception that women are not apt to lead and if put in leadership positions, they would be less competent and not as qualified as men. The purpose of this study was to answer the main research question of whether leadership style differences exist between Egyptian men and women working in the public sector in Egypt, taking the case of mid-level managers in the Ministry of Finance. The objective was to …

John Paul Stevens And Equally Impartial Government, Diane Marie Amann Feb 2010

John Paul Stevens And Equally Impartial Government, Diane Marie Amann

Scholarly Works

This article is the second publication arising out of the author's ongoing research respecting Justice John Paul Stevens. It is one of several published by former law clerks and other legal experts in the UC Davis Law Review symposium edition, Volume 43, No. 3, February 2010, "The Honorable John Paul Stevens."

The article posits that Justice Stevens's embrace of race-conscious measures to ensure continued diversity stands in tension with his early rejections of affirmative action programs. The contrast suggests a linear movement toward a progressive interpretation of the Constitution’s equality guarantee; however, examination of Stevens's writings in biographical context reveal …

Sky-Field: A Vertical Farming Solution For Urban New York, Justin White Feb 2010

Sky-Field: A Vertical Farming Solution For Urban New York, Justin White

Architecture Theses and Projects

Farming has not changed significantly in thousands of years. We still go about blanketing the ground with acres and acres of crops far away from the people who eat it. “We now have to talk and bring the green movement into our food supply. We will find a place in NY to do this,” states Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President. The concept is to design a vertical farm tower which will feed thousands of local residents, allowing them cheaper, organic, disease-free crops. The supply structure of the agricultural industry needs a big change. It is no longer becoming economical due …

A Legal Policy Analysis: The Current And Prospective Regulatory Framework For Renewable Energy And Energy Efficiency In Egypt, Karam J. Abulzahab Feb 2010

A Legal Policy Analysis: The Current And Prospective Regulatory Framework For Renewable Energy And Energy Efficiency In Egypt, Karam J. Abulzahab

Theses and Dissertations

Egypt has excellent natural conditions for the generation of electricity from Renewable Energy (RE) sources. It has in particular an immense potential for solar and wind energy. At the same time, an Egyptian energy crisis is emerging. Conventional domestic energy sources are declining and thus, Egypt will have to rely increasingly on costly imported energy in the near future. In addition, energy efficient (EE) consumption is an almost unknown term within the Egyptian society. Experts project for Egypt an energy saving potential of approximately 70%. Therefore, the promotion of RE & EE could be a successful policy instrument to mitigate …

Corn Stalk Penetration Resistance As A Predictor Of Southwestern Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Survival, B. K. Gibson, C. D. Parker, F. R. Musser

Midsouth Entomologist

Studies were conducted to determine if corn stalk strength had an effect on southwestern corn borer (Diatraea grandiosella Dyar) survival during different growth stages. In 2006 southwestern corn borer larvae were placed on corn plants during dough stage near the ear and base of the plant. Penetration resistance was lower and borer survival was higher near the ear than near the base of the plant. In 2007, five corn hybrids were planted at three locations in Mississippi. Plants were infested with five 3rd instars at the ear zone during tassel, dough, and dent stages. Survival decreased as the corn progressed …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infection of swine leads to a serious disease characterized by a delayed and defective adaptive immune response. It is hypothesized that a suboptimal innate immune response is responsible for the disease pathogenesis. In the study presented here we tested this hypothesis and identified several nonstructural proteins (NSPs) with innate immune evasion properties encoded by the PRRS viral genome. Four of the total ten PRRSV NSPs tested were found to have strong to moderate inhibitory effects on beta interferon (IFN-β) promoter activation. The strongest inhibitory effect was exhibited by NSP1 followed by, NSP2, NSP11, …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) contains the major glycoprotein, GP5, as well as three other minor glycoproteins, namely, GP2a, GP3, and GP4, on the virion envelope, all of which are required for generation of infectious virions. To study their interactions with each other and with the cellular receptor for PRRSV, we have cloned each of the viral glycoproteins and CD163 receptor in expression vectors and examined their expression and interaction with each other in transfected cells by coimmunoprecipitation (co-IP) assay using monospecific antibodies. Our results show that a strong interaction exists between the GP4 and GP5 proteins, although …

Aphids are important agricultural pests and also biological models for studies of insect-plant interactions, symbiosis, virus vectoring, and the developmental causes of extreme phenotypic plasticity. Here we present the 464 Mb draft genome assembly of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum. This first published whole genome sequence of a basal hemimetabolous insect provides an outgroup to the multiple published genomes of holometabolous insects. Pea aphids are host-plant specialists, they can reproduce both sexually and asexually, and they have coevolved with an obligate bacterial symbiont. Here we highlight findings from whole genome analysis that may be related to these unusual biological …

Application Of The B-Spline Collocation Method To A Geometrically Non-Linear Beam Problem, Jason Magoon

Theses

Engineers are researching solutions to resolve many of today's technical challenges. Numerical techniques are used to solve the mathematical models that arise in engineering problems. A numerical technique that is increasingly being used to solve mathematical models in engineering research is called the B-spline Collocation Method. The B-spline Collocation Method has a few distinct advantages over the Finite Element and Finite Difference Methods. The main advantage is that the B-spline Collocation Method efficiently provides a piecewise-continuous, closed form solution. Another advantage is that the B-spline Collocation Method procedure is very simple and easy to apply to many problems involving partial …

Genetic Basis For Rhizobium Etli Ce3 O-Antigen O-Methylated Residues That Vary According To Growth Conditions, Kristylea J. Ojeda, Jodie M. Box, K. Dale Noel

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The Rhizobium etli CE3 O antigen is a fixed-length heteropolymer with O methylation being the predominant type of sugar modification. There are two O-methylated residues that occur, on average, once per complete O antigen: a multiply O-methylated terminal fucose and 2-O methylation of a fucose residue within a repeating unit. The amount of the methylated terminal fucose decreases and the amount of 2-O-methylfucose increases when bacteria are grown in the presence of the host plant, Phaseolus vulgaris, or its seed exudates. Insertion mutagenesis was used to identify open reading frames required for the presence of these O-methylated …

The Metal Ion Requirements Of Arabidopsis Thaliana Glx2-2 For Catalytic Activity, Pattraranee Limphong, Ross M. Mckinney, Nicole E. Adams, Christopher A. Makaroff, Brian Bennett, Michael W. Crowder

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

In an effort to better understand the structure, metal content, the nature of the metal centers, and enzyme activity of Arabidopsis thaliana Glx2-2, the enzyme was overexpressed, purified, and characterized using metal analyses, kinetics, and UV–vis, EPR, and 1H NMR spectroscopies. Glx2-2-containing fractions that were purple, yellow, or colorless were separated during purification, and the differently colored fractions were found to contain different amounts of Fe and Zn(II). Spectroscopic analyses of the discrete fractions provided evidence for Fe(II), Fe(III), Fe(III)–Zn(II), and antiferromagnetically coupled Fe(II)–Fe(III) centers distributed among the discrete Glx2-2-containing fractions. The individual steady-state kinetic constants varied among the …

Climate Change, Dead Zones, And Massive Problems In The Administrative State: A Guide For Whittling Away, J.B. Ruhl, James Salzman

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Mandates that agencies solve massive problems such as sprawl and climate change roll easily out of the halls of legislatures, but as a practical matter what can any one agency do about them? Serious policy challenges such as these have dimensions far beyond the capacity of any single agency to manage effectively. Rather, as the Supreme Court recently observed in Massachusetts v. Environmental Protection Agency, agencies, like legislatures, do not generally resolve massive problems in one fell swoop, but instead whittle away over time, refining their approach as circumstances change and they develop a more nuanced understanding of how best …
