Wavelet Based Functional Models For Transcriptome Analysis With Tiling Arrays, Lieven Clement, Kristof Debeuf, Ciprian Crainiceanu, Olivier Thas, Marnik Vuylsteke, Rafael Irizarry

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

For a better understanding of the biology of an organism a complete description is needed of all regions of the genome that are actively transcribed. Tiling arrays can be used for this purpose. Such arrays allow the discovery of novel transcripts and the assessment of differential expression between two or more experimental conditions such as genotype, treatment, tissue, etc. Much of the initial methodological efforts were designed for transcript discovery, while more recent developments also focus on differential expression. To our knowledge no methods for tiling arrays are described in the literature that can both assess transcript discovery and identify …

The Heat Capacity And Thermodynamic Properties Of The Iron Oxides And Their Relation To The Mineral Core Of The Iron Storage Protein Ferritin, Claine Lindsey Morton Snow Feb 2010

The Heat Capacity And Thermodynamic Properties Of The Iron Oxides And Their Relation To The Mineral Core Of The Iron Storage Protein Ferritin, Claine Lindsey Morton Snow

Theses and Dissertations

The iron oxides are a group of materials with geological, biological, and technological importance. A thermodynamic understanding of these materials is important because it provides information about their relative stabilities, chemical reactivity, and transformations. This study provides the heat capacity of a nanocrystalline magnetite (Fe3O4) sample, bulk hematite (α-Fe2O3), nanocrystalline hematite, akaganéite (β-FeOOH), and lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH) at temperatures as low as 0.5 K. These measurements were fit to theoretical functions at temperatures lower than 15 K, and the respective thermophysical properties of these materials are discussed. Also the molar entropies of bulk hematite and hydrous nanocrystalline hematite as well as …

Initial Findings On Visual Acuity Thresholds In An African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana), Melissa R. Shyan-Norwalt, Jeff Peterson, Barbara Milankow King, Timothy E. Staggs, Robert H.I. Dale

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

There are only a few published examinations of elephant visual acuity. All involved Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) and found visual acuity to be between 8′ and 11′ of arc for a stimulus near the tip of the trunk, equivalent to a 0.50 cm gap, at a distance of about 2 m from the eyes. We predicted that African elephants (Loxodonta africana) would have similarly high visual acuity, necessary to facilitate eye-trunk coordination for feeding, drinking and social interactions. When tested on a discrimination task using Landolt-C stimuli, one African elephant cow demonstrated a visual acuity of …

Group Hunting—A Reason For Sociality In Molossid Bats?, Dina K. N. Dechmann, Bart Kranstauber, David Gibbs, Martin Wikelski Feb 2010

Group Hunting—A Reason For Sociality In Molossid Bats?, Dina K. N. Dechmann, Bart Kranstauber, David Gibbs, Martin Wikelski

KIP Articles

Many bat species live in groups, some of them in highly complex social systems, but the reasons for sociality in bats remain largely unresolved. Increased foraging efficiency through passive information transfer in species foraging for ephemeral insects has been postulated as a reason for group formation of male bats in the temperate zones. We hypothesized that benefits from group hunting might also entice tropical bats of both sexes to live in groups. Here we investigate whether Molossus molossus, a small insectivorous bat in Panama, hunts in groups. We use a phased antenna array setup to reduce error in telemetry bearings. …

Pesticides As "Pollutants" Under The Clean Water Act, John H. Minan, Tracy M. Frech Feb 2010

Pesticides As "Pollutants" Under The Clean Water Act, John H. Minan, Tracy M. Frech

San Diego Law Review

Climate change and shifting weather patterns affect the development and distribution of insects and other pests. Public agencies as well as private parties, such as farmers and ranchers, commonly use chemical and biological pesticides to combat the spread and entrenchment of these nuisances. Given the ubiquitous use of pesticides, it is not surprising that pesticide regulation involves important issues of law and public policy.

2010 Annual Nevada NSF EPSCoR Climate Change Conference

37 PowerPoint slides Convener: Franco Biondi, UNR & Michael Young, DRI Session 4: Ecological Change and Water Resources Abstract: -Climate change models predict a decline in precipitation over the next few decades throughout much of the southwest. -Such change has the potential to shift water uptake dynamics of phreatophytes -If groundwater pumping also occurs, the impact of climate change could be exacerbated. -A better understanding of the forces that drive the coupling and decoupling of phreatophytes to groundwater is needed.
