Using Technology To Reach More Students In Tough Times: An Analysis Of Five Semesters Of Data Connecting Students With The Information Literacy Skills They Need To Complete Their Assignments, Steve Borrelli, Alex Merrill Feb 2010

Using Technology To Reach More Students In Tough Times: An Analysis Of Five Semesters Of Data Connecting Students With The Information Literacy Skills They Need To Complete Their Assignments, Steve Borrelli, Alex Merrill

Online Northwest

In the fall of 2007 Washington State University Libraries introduced the Information Literacy Education (ILE) learning environment to deliver scalable information literacy (IL) instruction to both on campus and distance courses. Slated to become an open source product in the spring 2010 ILE has provided instruction to over 5700 students in six colleges in 5 semesters. Utilizing ILE the total number of participants reached by the Instruction Department increased by nearly 20%. ILE is a flexible online learning environment which delivers IL instruction targeted to the needs of specific assignments. Librarians and course instructors collaborate to design a space comprised …

Fast Protein Structure Alignment, Yosi Shibberu, Allen Holder, Kyla Lutz Feb 2010

Fast Protein Structure Alignment, Yosi Shibberu, Allen Holder, Kyla Lutz

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

We address the problem of aligning the 3D structures of two proteins. Our pairwise comparisons are based on a new optimization model that is succinctly expressed in terms of linear transformations and highlights the problem’s intrinsic geometry. The optimization problem is approximately solved with a new polynomial time algorithm. The worst case analysis of the algorithm shows that the solution is bounded by a constant depending only on the data of the problem.

HPD Articles

RATIONALE: Angiotensin converting enzyme type 2 (ACE2) is a new member of the brain renin-angiotensin system, that might be activated by an overactive renin-angiotensin system. OBJECTIVE: To clarify the role of central ACE2 using a new transgenic mouse model with human (h)ACE2 under the control of a synapsin promoter, allowing neuron-targeted expression in the central nervous system. METHODS AND RESULTS: Syn-hACE2 (SA) transgenic mice exhibit high hACE2 protein expression and activity throughout the brain. Baseline hemodynamic parameters (telemetry), autonomic function, and spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity (SBRS) were not significantly different between SA mice and nontransgenic littermates. Brain-targeted ACE2 overexpression attenuated the …

Effects Of Socioeconomic Status On Brain Development, And How Cognitive Neuroscience May Contribute To Levelling The Playing Field, Rajeev Raizada, Mark M. Kishiyama Feb 2010

Effects Of Socioeconomic Status On Brain Development, And How Cognitive Neuroscience May Contribute To Levelling The Playing Field, Rajeev Raizada, Mark M. Kishiyama

Dartmouth Scholarship

The study of socioeconomic status (SES) and the brain finds itself in a circumstance unusual for Cognitive Neuroscience: large numbers of questions with both practical and scientific importance exist, but they are currently under-researched and ripe for investigation. This review aims to highlight these questions, to outline their potential significance, and to suggest routes by which they might be approached. Although remarkably few neural studies have been carried out so far, there exists a large literature of previous behavioural work. This behavioural research provides an invaluable guide for future neuroimaging work, but also poses an important challenge for it: how …

Understanding Classification Decisions For Object Detection, Will Landecker, Michael David Thomure, Melanie Mitchell Feb 2010

Understanding Classification Decisions For Object Detection, Will Landecker, Michael David Thomure, Melanie Mitchell

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Computer vision systems are traditionally tested in the object detection paradigm. In these experiments, a vision system is asked whether or not a specific object--for example an animal--occurs in a given image. A system that often answers correctly is said to be very accurate. In this talk, we will discuss some ambiguity that exists in this measure of accuracy. We will also propose a new measure of object-detection accuracy that addresses some of this ambiguity, and apply this measure to the hierarchical "standard model" of visual cortex.

Dripping, Jeting, Drops And Wetting: The Magic Of Microfluidics, David Weitz

Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering

This talk will discuss some of the new opportunities that arise by precisely controlling fluid flow and mixing using microfluidic devices. I describe studies to elucidate the instabilities that lead to drop formation and use these to create new materials that are difficult to achieve with any other method. I also show how the exquisite control afforded by the microfluidic devices provides enabling technology to use droplets as nanoreactors to qualitatively increase the rate of screening of biological reactions, and will demonstrate how this can be used in new applications relevant for biotechnology.

Subunit Contributions To The Structure And Function Of Insect Olfactory Receptors, Andrew S. Nichols Feb 2010

Subunit Contributions To The Structure And Function Of Insect Olfactory Receptors, Andrew S. Nichols

Open Access Dissertations

Insects detect specific chemicals in the environment with olfactory receptors (ORs), which represent a novel class of ligand-gated ion channel. Insect ORs are comprised of at least one common subunit (OR83b in Drosophila) and at least one odorant-binding subunit. However, the molecular details of insect OR architecture, such as how they bind odorants, are unknown. This lack of knowledge hinders the development of compounds that may modulate OR function and potentially control insects involved in disease propagation and agricultural damage. The intent of this project is to investigate the structure and function of insect ORs. To this end, the utility …

A Robust Gene Selection Method For Microarray-Based Cancer Classification., Xiaosheng Wang, Osamu Gotoh Feb 2010

A Robust Gene Selection Method For Microarray-Based Cancer Classification., Xiaosheng Wang, Osamu Gotoh

Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy

Gene selection is of vital importance in molecular classification of cancer using high-dimensional gene expression data. Because of the distinct characteristics inherent to specific cancerous gene expression profiles, developing flexible and robust feature selection methods is extremely crucial. We investigated the properties of one feature selection approach proposed in our previous work, which was the generalization of the feature selection method based on the depended degree of attribute in rough sets. We compared the feature selection method with the established methods: the depended degree, chi-square, information gain, Relief-F and symmetric uncertainty, and analyzed its properties through a series of classification …

Mesoporous Silica Microparticles Enhance The Cytotoxicity Of Anticancer Platinum Drugs, Zhimin Tao, Bonnie Toms, Jerry Goodisman, Tewodros Asefa Feb 2010

Mesoporous Silica Microparticles Enhance The Cytotoxicity Of Anticancer Platinum Drugs, Zhimin Tao, Bonnie Toms, Jerry Goodisman, Tewodros Asefa

Chemistry - All Scholarship

We report on the endocytosis and the time-dependent enhanced cytotoxicity of anticancer platinum drugs when the drugs are combined with (or loaded into) one of the two most common types of mesoporous silica materials, MCM-41 or SBA-15. The anticancer drug cisplatin and its isomer transplatin, when loaded on MCM-41 and SBA-15 microparticles, were less cytotoxic to leukemia cells than the drugs alone after 12 h exposure. However, the drug-loaded microparticles exhibited unprecedented enhanced cytotoxicity to the cancerous cells after 24 h of exposure. This cytotoxicity of the drug-loaded microparticles was even higher than of the pure drugs in solutions, suggesting …
