Advocating For Scholarship: Why Open Access?, Paula S. Mcmillen, Cory Tucker Feb 2010

Advocating For Scholarship: Why Open Access?, Paula S. Mcmillen, Cory Tucker

Journal for International Counselor Education

The editors of the Journal for International Counselor Education have taken the decisive step to make this publication an “Open Access” journal—freely available to all readers with internet access. This article will set the context for choosing open access publishing in the current scholarly communication environment. Numerous factors have changed the face of scholarly publishing, creating an unsustainable economic model for print and subscription journals. Obstacles such as evaluation traditions in higher education must adapt as creators and users increasingly demand open access to scholarship online. Timely realization of the opportunities and benefits of the open access model depend upon …

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

High-precision ID-TIMS U-Pb zircon ages for 12 interstratified tuffs and tonsteins are used to radiometrically calibrate the detailed lithostratigraphic, cyclostratigraphic, and biostratigraphic framework of the Carboniferous Donets Basin of eastern Europe. Chemical abrasion of zircons, use of the internationally calibrated EARTHTIME mixed U-Pb isotope dilution tracer, and improved mass spectrometry guided by detailed error analysis have resulted in an age resolution of

A Novel Choline Cotransporter Sequestration Compartment In Cholinergic Neurons Revealed By Selective Endosomal Ablation, Michael T. Ivy, Robert F. Newkirk, Yilun Wang, James G. Townsel

Biology Faculty Research

The sodium-dependent, high affinity choline transporter – choline cotransporter – (ChCoT, aka: cho-1, CHT1, CHT) undergoes constitutive and regulated trafficking between the plasma membrane and cytoplasmic compartments. The pathways and regulatory mechanisms of this trafficking are not well understood. We report herein studies involving selective endosomal ablation to further our understanding of the trafficking of the ChCoT. Selective ablation of early sorting and recycling endosomes resulted in a decrease of ∼75% of [3H]choline uptake and ∼70% of [3H]hemicholinium-3 binding. Western blot analysis showed that ablation produced a similar decrease in ChCoTs in the plasma membrane subcellular fraction. The time frame …

Thioredoxin Suppresses Microscopic Hopping Of T7 Dna Polymerase On Duplex Dna, Candice M. Etson, Samir M. Hamdan, Charles C. Richardson, Antoine M. Van Oijen Feb 2010

Thioredoxin Suppresses Microscopic Hopping Of T7 Dna Polymerase On Duplex Dna, Candice M. Etson, Samir M. Hamdan, Charles C. Richardson, Antoine M. Van Oijen

Physics: Faculty Publications

The DNA polymerases involved in DNA replication achieve high processivity of nucleotide incorporation by forming a complex with processivity factors. A model system for replicative DNA polymerases, the bacteriophage T7 DNA polymerase (gp5), encoded by gene 5, forms a tight, 1:1 complex with Escherichia coli thioredoxin. By a mechanism that is not fully understood, thioredoxin acts as a processivity factor and converts gp5 from a distributive polymerase into a highly processive one. We use a single-molecule imaging approach to visualize the interaction of fluorescently labeled T7 DNA polymerase with double-stranded DNA. We have observed T7 gp5, both with and without …

Carbon Dioxide Stimulation Of Nitrification In Activated Sludge Reactors, Peter G. Stroot, Lina Posso-Blandon, Raymond A. Morris Feb 2010

Carbon Dioxide Stimulation Of Nitrification In Activated Sludge Reactors, Peter G. Stroot, Lina Posso-Blandon, Raymond A. Morris

USF Patents

A method of stimulating nitrification at low SRT by elevating pCO2 during aeration is disclosed. The improvement on solids settling performance when elevated pCO2 was supplied after 2 hours within the React cycle is consistent with the previous results that identified inorganic carbon as a potential remedy to poor settling and bulking sludge problems in activated sludge systems. Elevated pCO2 increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and lowers the pH, which improve nitrification. The specific growth rate of nitrifying bacteria is sensitive to pCO2, pH, and dissolved oxygen (DO). The DO is a function of the aeration rate. Elevating the …

On The Value Of Philosophy: The Latin American Case [Abstract], Manuel Vargas Feb 2010

On The Value Of Philosophy: The Latin American Case [Abstract], Manuel Vargas

Comparative Philosophy

There is very little study of Latin American philosophy in the English-speaking philosophical world. This can sometimes lead to the impression that there is nothing of philosophical worth in Latin American philosophy or its history. The present article offers some reasons for thinking that this impression is mistaken, and indeed, that we ought to have more study of Latin American philosophy than currently exists in the English-speaking philosophical world. In particular, the article argues for three things: (1) an account of cultural resources that is useful for illuminating the fact of cultural differences and variations in cultural complexity, (2) a …

Systematic Overrepresentation Of Dna Termini And Underrepresentation Of Subterminal Regions Among Sequencing Templates Prepared From Hydrodynamically Sheared Linear Dna Molecules, Sherri L. Schwartz, Mark L. Farman Feb 2010

Systematic Overrepresentation Of Dna Termini And Underrepresentation Of Subterminal Regions Among Sequencing Templates Prepared From Hydrodynamically Sheared Linear Dna Molecules, Sherri L. Schwartz, Mark L. Farman

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Analysis of fungal genome sequence assemblies reveals that telomeres are poorly represented even though telomeric reads tend to be superabundant. We surmised that the problem might lie in the DNA shearing conditions used to create clone libraries for genome sequencing.

RESULTS: A shotgun strategy was used to sequence and assemble circular and linear cosmid DNAs sheared using conditions typical for a genome project. The DNA sheared in circular form assembled into a single sequence contig. However, the linearized cosmid produced an incomplete assembly because the two DNA termini, though greatly overrepresented in the clone library used for sequencing, were …
