Illegal Lives, Loves, And Work: The Effects Of Criminalization On Sex Workers In Canada, Emily Van Der Meulen Jun 2010

Illegal Lives, Loves, And Work: The Effects Of Criminalization On Sex Workers In Canada, Emily Van Der Meulen

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

Based on interviews with Toronto sex workers, this article argues that the impacts of criminalization on sex workers’ lives includes increased vulnerability to violence, decreased business, and the necessity for secrecy. Criminalization also impacts sex workers’ intimate and business relations by necessitating external support and protection, mythologies around pimping, and increased power by police and landlords. Sex workers’ lived and intimate knowledge lend them a greater awareness of the effects and consequences of the current Canadian legislative framework as well as a greater awareness of what social and legal changes are necessary to improve their lives.

Achieving Successful Long-Term Recovery And Safety From A Catastrophe: Recommendations For Human Recovery, Pamela Jenkins, Michelle Gremillion, Branda Nowell

CHART Publications

Since August 2005, individuals and families in the Gulf Coast area face enormous challenges to recovery. After a catastrophe, individuals and families have to build back nearly every facet of their lives. The multi-dimensionality of their recovery involves a myriad of resources: housing, health care, employment, schools, and day care. Housing remains central to recovery. While this section of the report does not include specific recommendations about housing, the need for housing and the issues of rebuilding are intertwined with all of the recovery issues. In this section we discuss recommendations for the management of the human recovery. Specifically, we …

Preventing Violence In Low-Income Communities: Facilitating Residents' Ability To Intervene In Neighborhood Problems, Mary L. Ohmer, Barbara D. Warner, Elizabeth Beck Jun 2010

Preventing Violence In Low-Income Communities: Facilitating Residents' Ability To Intervene In Neighborhood Problems, Mary L. Ohmer, Barbara D. Warner, Elizabeth Beck

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The violence found in low-income communities, including areas of concentrated poverty, is often extensive and can involve illegal drugs, juvenile delinquency, and even homicide. A large body of research has emerged which points to the positive effects of informal social control and social capital in preventing violence in lowincome communities, including neighbors taking leadership roles by intervening themselves. This article contains a description of an exploratory study ofa pilot training program the authors developed to facilitate residents' ability to intervene in neighborhood problems in a low-income community in Atlanta, Georgia. The training incorporated concepts from restorative justice, peacemaking criminology, and …

"I Aspire To Walk": Egyptian Working Women Defining Threats On Cairo's Public Space, Caroline Kamel Nassif Jun 2010

"I Aspire To Walk": Egyptian Working Women Defining Threats On Cairo's Public Space, Caroline Kamel Nassif

Theses and Dissertations

Since the 1970s economic activities have become characterized by a combination of spatial dispersion and global integration, which as Sassen (1991) emphasized has created a new strategic role for major cities. Due to these changes, the â Global Cityâ , a term coined by Sassen, has emerged with certain political, economic and cultural characteristics that render it vital for the world economy. Cairo, a city with a long reputable history and acclaimed regional and continental status has been striving to acquire the â globalâ status. While there is controversy on whether Cairo has acquired this title or not, El Khishin …

Aba Criminal Justice Standards On The Treatment Of Prisoners, Margo Schlanger, Margaret C. Love, Carl Reynolds

Articles

or more than i O years, corrections professionals and others concerned about the treatment of prisoners have despaired over conditions in California's prisons. Crowding, violence, racial segregation, abysmal medical care, an obstructionist corrections union. and a state budget crisis have combined to bring the system to the point of constitutional meltdov,n. In 2008. a state appellate court found conditions of "'extreme peril to the safety of persons and property,'' and a three-judge federal court confirmed the existence of a "substantial risk to the health and safety of the men and women who work inside these prisons and the inmates housed …

Emergency Management Training And Exercises For Transportation Agency Operations, Mti Report 09-17, Frances L. Edwards, Daniel C. Goodrich

Mineta Transportation Institute

Training and exercises are an important part of emergency management. Plans are developed based on threat assessment, but they are not useful unless staff members are trained on how to use the plan, and then practice that training. Exercises are also essential for ensuring that the plan is effective, and outcomes from exercises are used to improve the plan. Exercises have been an important part of gauging the preparedness of response organizations since Civil Defense days when full-scale exercises often included the community. Today there are various types of exercises that can be used to evaluate the preparedness of public …

Power Flow In Railway Electrification Power System, Sisi Li May 2010

Power Flow In Railway Electrification Power System, Sisi Li

Theses

This thesis discusses aspects of the design of the railway electrification system (RES) and in particular the electric distribution system for a 2x25 kV railway power system.

The analysis of Railway Power Supplies (RPS) presents a unique type of load flow problem which is characterized by its constant moving loads, dynamically changing load types (constant current/constant power), and its specialized network structure. The autotransformer power supply system with double track was the system studied in this thesis.

The details of the system studied were provided by Caltrain (California Commuter Rail) for a planned high speed extension to Caltrain system. A …

Analysis Of Tunnel Behaviour Under Seismic Loads By Means Of Simple And Advanced Numerical Approaches, Daniela Boldini, Angelo Amorosi, Fabrizio Palmisano May 2010

Analysis Of Tunnel Behaviour Under Seismic Loads By Means Of Simple And Advanced Numerical Approaches, Daniela Boldini, Angelo Amorosi, Fabrizio Palmisano

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

In this paper different approaches aimed at investigating the dynamic behaviour of circular tunnels in the transverse direction are presented. The analysed cases refer to a shallow tunnel built in an ideal soft clayey deposit. The adopted approaches include one-dimensional (1D) numerical analyses performed modelling the soil as a single phase visco-elastic non-linear medium, the results of which are then used to evaluate the input data for selected analytical solutions proposed in the literature (uncoupled approach), and 2D fully coupled Finite Element simulations adopting visco-elastic and visco-elasto-plastic constitutive assumptions for the soil and the lining (coupled approach). The results are …

Floatation Of Tunnel In Liquefiable Soil, S. C. Chian, S. P. G. Madabhushi May 2010

Floatation Of Tunnel In Liquefiable Soil, S. C. Chian, S. P. G. Madabhushi

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Underground structures such as tunnels have a lower unit weight than the surrounding soil and are commonly deemed to be susceptible to floatation in liquefiable soil. In the process of floatation, the tunnel has to possess ample buoyancy force to shear and carry the overlying soil upwards. This is aided by soil liquefaction resulting from the increase in water pressure with number of earthquake loading cycles. With onset of liquefaction, effective stress decreases which lead to a reduction in the shear strength of soil, hence assisting the floatation of tunnel. Conversely, the total stress exerted by the overburden soil suppresses …
