Geothermometry And Cathodoluminescence Of Quartz Reveal Crystallization Histories Of Katmai Magmas, Allison L. Payne May 2010

Geothermometry And Cathodoluminescence Of Quartz Reveal Crystallization Histories Of Katmai Magmas, Allison L. Payne

Geosciences

"This study combines electron microprobe analysis of titanium and aluminum in quartz, cathodoluminescence imagery, and titanium-in-quartz geothermometry to constrain the growth histories of quartz grains from three magmatic rock suites of Katmai, Alaska: (1) high-silica rhyolite from the 1912 Novarupta lava dome; (2) the Mageik rhyolite sills, suggested as an analog for Novarupta's feeder; and (3) the Pinnacle Porphyry granodiorite, which has mingled field relations with the Mageik sills. Oscillatory zoning and constant titanium concentrations across Novarupta quartz phenocrysts suggest continuous growth at temperatures of ~800-850°C. Thin, aluminum-rich, high-cathodoluminescence intensity rims may represent rapid growth during magmatic ascent or dome …

Cityland – Vol. 7, No. 4, Center For New York City Law

CityLand - 2010

The May 2010 issue of CityLand covers major land use and zoning developments across New York City. Highlights include the City Council’s approval of the Rose Plaza on the River project in Williamsburg, which increased affordable housing to 30% of units. The City Planning Commission reviewed the proposed redevelopment of the Domino Sugar site, raising concerns about infrastructure and affordability. A zoning text amendment was introduced to regulate car-share vehicle parking citywide. The Council approved Knickerbocker Commons, a Bushwick apartment building designed to meet Passive House energy standards. Staten Island’s Grymes Hill and Sunnyside neighborhoods were rezoned to preserve low-density …

Unrelated Business Income Taxes: What The Federal Courts Have Said, Barry Long May 2010

Unrelated Business Income Taxes: What The Federal Courts Have Said, Barry Long

Honors Theses

Several issues impact the management of accounting for large not-for-profit organizations that would not arise normally in a regular for-profit corporation. These issues vary widely from how much annual salary the executives rightfully deserve as compensation to the way the organization raises funds for its day-to-day activities. Slightly less common, but still very important, is the issue of taxes. Yes, not-for-profit corporations have to pay taxes, but only on certain forms of revenue. In many instances, large not-for-profit corporations operate similar to a for-profit firm. The money not-for-profits have to pay tax on falls under the Internal Revenue Code sections …

Do Objective Measures Reduce The Disproportionate Rates Of Minority Youth Placed In Detention: Validation Of A Risk Assessment Instrument?, Tiffany Simpson May 2010

Do Objective Measures Reduce The Disproportionate Rates Of Minority Youth Placed In Detention: Validation Of A Risk Assessment Instrument?, Tiffany Simpson

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The overrepresentation of youth of color in the juvenile justice system, often referred to as disproportionate minority contact (DMC) can be found at many stages of the juvenile justice continuum. Further, research has shown that overrepresentation is not necessarily related to higher rates of criminal activity and suggests that case processing disparities can contribute to DMC. Risk assessment instruments (RAI) are objective techniques used to make decisions about youth in the juvenile justice system. This study examined the effects of implementing an RAI designed to make detention decisions, in a predominantly rural parish in Louisiana. Police officers from three law …

Understanding The Socialization Experiences Of New Technical Faculty: A Transition From Industry To The Technical College, Annette Bordelon Thornton May 2010

Understanding The Socialization Experiences Of New Technical Faculty: A Transition From Industry To The Technical College, Annette Bordelon Thornton

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This phenomenological qualitative research study sought to gain insight into the socialization experiences of new vocational technical faculty. Ten Louisiana vocational technical faculty members were interviewed face-to-face. The interviews were audiotaped, transcribed, and analyzed to discover how these new vocational technical faculty members transitioned from industry to academe. Data analysis revealed that participants in the study experienced a similar transitional process into the technical college as twoyear and four-year faculty into community colleges and universities. Like their two-year and four-year counterparts, the participants experienced similar challenges related to their new teaching positions, such as balancing heavy workloads, maintaining industry contacts, …

The Impact Of The State-Federal Vocational Rehabilitation Program On Quality Of Life, Vanessa Rakestraw May 2010

The Impact Of The State-Federal Vocational Rehabilitation Program On Quality Of Life, Vanessa Rakestraw

Theses and Dissertations

This study utilizes the Longitudinal Study of the Vocational Rehabilitation Program to examine the impact of state-federal vocational rehabilitation services on the quality of life of consumers. The theory that guides this study is an amalgam of theories of Allardt, Halpern, Campbell, and Cummins which indicate that quality of life is made up of various domains which parallel Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The study followed the theory that improvement in the individual domains of life would improve its overall quality. The domains of physical functioning, self-esteem, community integration and productivity were assessed prior to and after the receipt of vocational …

From Truth To Justice: How Does Amnesty Factor In? A Comparative Analysis Of South Africa And Sierra Leone's Truth And Reconciliation Commissions, Rachel W. Smith May 2010

From Truth To Justice: How Does Amnesty Factor In? A Comparative Analysis Of South Africa And Sierra Leone's Truth And Reconciliation Commissions, Rachel W. Smith

Honors Scholar Theses

Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRC) have emerged in the last few decades as a mechanism for a state to overcome widespread, grave, human rights violations. There are numerous approaches to a TRC all with an ultimate goal: that formerly warring factions, perpetrators, witnesses, and victims can move forward as a united people. I propose that the provision of amnesty is critical to the success of a TRC. I hypothesize that the form of amnesty chosen (i.e. blanket v. conditional amnesty) determines the revelation of truth and realization of justice, which in turn dictates whether a TRC can achieve reconciliation. To …

Critical-Incident Response: A Study Of Training, Management, And Mitigation In North Carolina Sheriffs' Offices., Gregory Alan Minton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the amount of training each sheriff's office requires in North Carolina and if that training includes multiagency exercises designed to mitigate a critical-incident response and identify any concerns from those training events. The study also compared departmental strength (number of sworn officers per agency) with county populations and geographic area of the state the agency is located in with the number of hours required annually by each agency. Finally, each agency was asked if it had participated in a multiagency exercise and a multiagency incident and to identify any issues that occurred …

Determinants Of Success In Iso 9000 Implementation, Michael Albert Bell May 2010

Determinants Of Success In Iso 9000 Implementation, Michael Albert Bell

Open Access Dissertations

The management of quality is a consideration in all industries. The ISO 9000 standard defines a management system framework which includes the necessary and sufficient elements for the systematic management of quality. Some organizations experience positive results from implementing an ISO 9000 based quality management system while others do not. Given its widespread use and the economic implications of ineffective implementation, this study analyzes the implementation process steps, the performance of system elements after certification and organization performance metrics. The methodology combines publicly available financial data and survey results to characterize the determinants of success for ISO 9000 quality management …

Medical-Legal Partnerships: Addressing The Unmet Legal Needs Of Health Center Patients, Peter Shin, Fraser Rothenberg Byrne, Emily Jones, Joel B. Teitelbaum, Lee Repasch, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

Medical-legal partnerships (MLPs), now available at over 180 hospitals and health centers across 38 states, are an important option for addressing the legal needs affecting low-income and vulnerable patients, and thereby improving their overall health. We estimate that each year, anywhere between 50 and 85 percent of health centers users - or between ten and 17 million people - experience unmet legal needs, many of which negatively impact their health. In a medical-legal partnership, health care staff at hospitals, clinics, and other sites are trained to screen for health-related legal issues, refer the patient to an affiliated lawyer or legal …

The Effects Of A Curriculum Intervention On Arkansas Students' Interests In Manufacturing As Measured By The Kuder Career Interest Assessment, Bridget Rose Shemwell May 2010

The Effects Of A Curriculum Intervention On Arkansas Students' Interests In Manufacturing As Measured By The Kuder Career Interest Assessment, Bridget Rose Shemwell

Student Theses and Dissertations

The Kuder Career Planning System administrative database results for the past five years have shown a low interest in the manufacturing career cluster among Arkansas students. The low student interest and shortage of high-skilled labor in manufacturing prompted the Arkansas Department of Career Education to invest grant funds in a new manufacturing curriculum for career orientation teachers to implement as an intervention in their classrooms. The intervention intent was to inform eighth graders about career opportunities in manufacturing and the skills necessary to compete for high-skill, high-wage, and high demand manufacturing careers in an effort to help alleviate the shortage …
