Leaders Or Managers: Who Will Define A New Vision For Dental Education?, Fred Certosimo

General Practice Publications

Leaders and managers are vital to any organization; however, each possesses intrinsic characteristics ideally suited to produce entirely different outcomes. Modern dental education finds itself in a predicament as it assesses new ways to meet the ever-changing demands of its profession and the superimposed mega-issues and global concerns of the new millennium—all competing in an organization and curriculum imprisoned in the first two-thirds of the twentieth century. The purpose of this article is to highlight the role of leadership in dentistry and more specifically dental education. It compares and contrasts characteristics commonly found in leaders who seek long-term, outward-looking organizational …

Do Managers Walk The Talk? Using Behavioral Observations Scales (Bos) And 360-Degree Ratings To Assess Organizational Values, Aaron A. Buchko, Kathleen J. Buchko

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

A study was performed on the managerial staff and supervisors of a large manufacturing plant (n = 129) to measure individuals’ commitment to the organization’s values. A Behavioral Observation Scale (BOS) measurement instrument was developed by the members of the organization and was administered using a 360 degree valuation process. Results indicated good scale reliability and consistency. A factor analysis of the data yielded 4 distinct factors, which corresponded reasonably well to the underlying organizational values. Implications for future research and for the evaluation of organizational values for practicing managers are discussed.

The Effects Of Transformational Leadership On Employees' Perceived Leadership Effectiveness In Public Organizations Federal Emergency Management Agency Case, Hasan Karaca

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the capacity of public leaders to bring about change is increasingly questioned, public agencies have come under pressure to transform and innovate. More research is needed to identify how leaders who promote innovation, creativity, and adaptability affect the performance of public organizations. Constant improvement of organizations and individuals encourages leaders to innovate, evaluate risks as opportunities, and tackle the status quo. This raises the significance of how transformational leadership contributes to organizational performance and reacts to public agencies‘ environment, and how it might reorganize them. The present study examines the relationship between transformational leadership behaviors and perceived leadership effectiveness …

Scholarly Works

As a reaction to perceived and actual regulatory failures at the Securities and Exchange Commission (the SEC), from mistakes that contributed to the financial crisis to the Bernard Madoff affair, the SEC has been engaged in an operational transformation process. The growing literature on management and leadership in times of change -- change leadership literature -- offers a number of potentially valuable lenses through which we may assess reform at the SEC.

With the thought that securities regulators and others may learn valuable lessons about the SEC’s restructuring and reorganization from experts in change leadership, this Article explores a selected …

The Insider's Advantage: Ceo Experience And The Performance Of Large Diversified Firms, J.L. Stimpert, Julie A. Chesley, Amanda S. Ostrowitz

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Much upper echelons research focuses on the effect of CEO experience on firm performance outcomes. This paper extends this research stream using human and social capital theories as a framework to examine the effect of CEO experience on the performance of large diversified companies. Our analysis of 239 Fortune “500” companies finds that larger companies are more likely to select insiders and individuals who have more firm-specific experience to be their CEO. We also find that the selection of insiders and CEOs with more firm-specific experience is associated with significantly higher firm performance. These findings highlight the importance of the …

Greenleaf’S Servant-Leadership And Quakerism: A Nexus, Carolyn Crippen

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Two hundred copies of a small thirty-seven page booklet with a bright orange cardstock cover were published in 1970. The author, Robert Kiefner Greenleaf (1904-1990), introduced a paradox in The Servant as Leader (Greenleaf, 1970) and presented a new approach to leadership including followership and service. Today there is an abundance of literature about the concept of leadership in general, and specifically, about particular types of leadership, for instance, contingency leadership (Fielder & Chemers, 1974); moral leadership (Sergiovanni, 1992); distributive leadership (Harris & Muijs, 2005); lateral leadership (Fisher & Sharp, 2004); shared leadership (Pearce & Conger, 2003); and transformational leadership …

System Transformation In The Context Of Building An Integrative System In The Child Welfare System In Allegheny County Through Child And Adolescent Needs And Strengths Assessment, Svetlana Doni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the last decade, the Allegheny County constituents could witness the transformation of a widely criticized system of divided services into a single Department of Human Services. As an attempt to improve service planning DHS moved to a common assessment (CANS Comprehensive) shared across the child-serving offices/systems that would lead to a shared service plan and an overall integrated service delivery process. The primary goal of the CANS is to support communication between systems and, in the end, help the integration process within DHS.

This study describes what CANS is and how it became a central point in Human Services …

An Agile Ba: A Case Study Of The Business Analyst In Agile, Nathan Wagner

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Companies adopting Agile software development methodologies are becoming a growing trend. The roles responsible for managing and participating in these types of projects must make a significant shift in focus when moving from the waterfall development process to a more adaptive way of working. In this paper, the role of the Business Analyst in Agile is explored through a qualitative study within a large software development organization utilizing Agile …

Long Distance Managerial Intervention In Overseas Conflicts: Helping Missionaries Reframe Conflict Along Multiple Dimensions, David R. Dunaetz Jan 2010

Long Distance Managerial Intervention In Overseas Conflicts: Helping Missionaries Reframe Conflict Along Multiple Dimensions, David R. Dunaetz

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Effective ways of conflict management must be found for missionaries when no trusted mediator in the region is available. Home office management or leaders in other regions can intervene through context rich media, such as the telephone and video conferencing, to provide help. Intervention through context poor media, such as email, is much less likely to succeed. Effective managerial intervention involving interaction with each party can lead to reframing the conflict into an opportunity to cooperate and find mutually beneficial solutions. The manager can present information, ask questions, and help the parties see that resolution is possible by addressing key …

Activating The Spirit Of Work: Business Advice Books And The Use Of Pastoral Power To Manage Employees, Tessa Pfafman Jan 2010

Activating The Spirit Of Work: Business Advice Books And The Use Of Pastoral Power To Manage Employees, Tessa Pfafman

Iowa Journal of Communication

Business advice books (BABs) provide popular, organization-centered reading material and are widely used in corporate training programs. Studies suggest these books impact contemporary organizations through discursive constructions that reframe the meaning of organizing (Jackson 2001). Using Foucault's (1976, 1979, 1984, 1988) writings on pastoral power as a framework, this study analyzes how the rhetoric of BABs functions as discursive technology of the self to control employees. Critical rhetorical analysis indicates the spiritual rhetoric used by BABs invokes pastoral power to construct the self in ways consistent with organizational goals.

Impact Of Positive Psychological Capital On Employee Well-Being Over Time, James B. Avey, Fred Luthans, Ronda M. Smith, Noel F. Palmer Jan 2010

Impact Of Positive Psychological Capital On Employee Well-Being Over Time, James B. Avey, Fred Luthans, Ronda M. Smith, Noel F. Palmer

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The recently recognized core construct of psychological capital or PsyCap (consisting of the positive psychological resources of efficacy, hope, optimism, and resilience) has been demonstrated to be related to various employee attitudinal, behavioral, and performance outcomes. However, to date, the impact of this positive core construct over time and on important employee well-being outcomes has not been tested. This study meets this need by analyzing the relationship between a broad cross-section of employees’ (N = 280) level of PsyCap and two measures of psychological well-being over time. The results indicated that employees’ PsyCap was related to both measures of well-being …

Everyday Sensegiving: A Closer Look At Successful Plant Managers, Anne D. Smith, Donde Ashmos Plowman, Dennis Duchon Jan 2010

Everyday Sensegiving: A Closer Look At Successful Plant Managers, Anne D. Smith, Donde Ashmos Plowman, Dennis Duchon

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The authors conducted in-depth interviews and on-site visits with successful plant managers to understand similarities in their management approaches. Across 11 different plants, representing nine different industries, the authors found each plant manager actively engaged in shaping how employees viewed the organization and its values through what the authors call “everyday sensegiving.” From themes inductively identified from the interviews and on-site visits, four central values—”Here, we value people, we value openness, we value being positive, and we value being part of a larger community”— were identified. In this article, the authors link everyday sensegiving of these middle managers and extend …
