Smes And Poverty Alleviation In Nigeria: Marketing Resources And Capabilities Implications, Olalekan U. Asikhia
Smes And Poverty Alleviation In Nigeria: Marketing Resources And Capabilities Implications, Olalekan U. Asikhia
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
This article seeks to identify the mediating role of marketing resources and capabilities in small and medium enterprises (SMEs)—poverty alleviation relationship. A qualitative approach of conceptualization of the interconnectedness of the major variables of the study is undertaken. Despite several development programs of SMEs and poverty alleviation, the poverty level of Nigerian SMEs has dragged with incidence of high SMEs failure. Marketing resources and capabilities are suggested as probable missing links between SMEs and profitable exchanges that lead to wealth creation, thus alleviating and eradicating poverty. While empirical study in this direction is vital, the current conceptual model shows that …
Killings Of Police In U.S. Cities Since 1980: An Examination Of Environmental Andpolitical Explanations, Stephanie L. Kent
Killings Of Police In U.S. Cities Since 1980: An Examination Of Environmental Andpolitical Explanations, Stephanie L. Kent
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
Most research on killings of police in urban areas attempted to link lethal violence against officers to the violence and disorder in the communities they work. Yet support for this relationship is inconsistent. Fewer studies considered whether local political arrangements affect killings of police. This study attempts to remedy this gap by using recent data to investigate the relationship between the political conditions of large U.S. cities and the number of homicides of police officers in the line of duty in the years 1980, 1990, and 2000. Negative binomial regression analyses suggest that racial income inequality and the size of …

Influence Strategies: What Leaders Can Learn From Oprah Winfrey, Katie Higginbottom
Influence Strategies: What Leaders Can Learn From Oprah Winfrey, Katie Higginbottom
Digitized Theses
This study used a qualitative research methodology, in the form of a case study, to explore strategies leaders can use to successfully influence others with the purpose of creating measurable change. Influence strategies present during the September 15th, 2008 episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, in which Winfrey successfully influenced millions of viewers to take action towards helping pass PROTECT Our Children Act ,U.S. Senate Bill 1738 are explored. In this study, leadership is understood as a property of the individual and that individual’s ability to influence others. Given the rate of change in the ever-advancing global climate forcing organizations …

A Case Study Of The Implementation Of Positive Behavior Supports (Pbs), Craig Ross
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this single case study was to examine the significant personal, social, and environmental elements influencing effective second-year implementation of a specific school reform initiative, Positive Behavior Supports, in one alternative high school in southwestern Michigan. Data were collected in the form of artifacts, observations, surveys and interviews. All surveys and interviews were conducted by third-party assistants in the fall of 2009. The survey and interview data were provided to the researcher only after all identifying information had been removed so that the anonymity of participants was protected.
Multiple theoretical frameworks were employed in the analysis of the …
An Empirical Investigation Of The Role Of "Ownership" In Creating Sustained School Reform, Sharon A. Brown
An Empirical Investigation Of The Role Of "Ownership" In Creating Sustained School Reform, Sharon A. Brown
ETD Archive
School reform policies have failed to produce sustained positive changes in education practice. Theories of school change provide structure to reform policy. Program evaluations focus on implementation and outcomes but seldom test the theoretical assumptions of the initiative. This study tested theory, specifically the influence of "ownership", against the experience of Reading First Ohio. This literacy program was implemented in elementary schools in low performing and very low socio-economic status urban and rural public districts in Ohio from 2003-2009. Archival data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The analysis confirmed that the constructs of leadership and classroom change are mutually …
Why Do Employees Behave Badly? An Examination Of The Effects Of Mood, Personality, And Job Demands On Counterproductive Work Behavior, Malissa Clark
Why Do Employees Behave Badly? An Examination Of The Effects Of Mood, Personality, And Job Demands On Counterproductive Work Behavior, Malissa Clark
Wayne State University Dissertations
Given the recent interest in the organizational literatures on the topic of workplace aggression and other acts of counterproductive work behavior (CWB), coupled with the interest in how affect and emotions influence organizational behavior, this study aimed to integrate these two themes to test how mood, personality, and factors relating to one's job influence a person's propensity to engage in acts of CWB. This study contributes to the extant literature in several ways. First, this is one of only a handful of studies that examines the relationship between momentary moods and counterproductive work behaviors using an experience sampling methodology. Second, …

Exploring Library 2.0 On The Social Web, Steve Brantley
Exploring Library 2.0 On The Social Web, Steve Brantley
Faculty & Staff Research & Creative Activity
Library 2.0 literature has described many of the possibilities Web 2.0 technologies offer libraries. Case studies have assessed local use, but no studies have measured the Library 2.0 phenomenon by searching public social networking sites. This study used library-specific terms to search public social networking sites, blog search engines, and social bookmarking sites for activity associated with librarians and library users. Blog search data about the recentness of activity or the popularity of a blog post indicate Library 2.0 technology has many early adopters but provide less evidence of sustained use. The results follow a curve resembling the 80 / …

A Partnership Plan To Support High-Quality Instruction In Ohio’S Urban School Districts, Ben Mcgee
A Partnership Plan To Support High-Quality Instruction In Ohio’S Urban School Districts, Ben Mcgee
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Establishing work practices that allow for effective communication, collaboration, and negotiations between state departments of education (DOEs) and their large urban districts is a significant undertaking in the national reform effort. The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) has had a unique opportunity to investigate how to establish an effective framework to build the necessary relationships between large urban districts and the supervising state educational agency (SEA) through funds provided by a Wallace Foundation grant and Harvard University’s leadership facilitation. The Wallace funding and partnership with Harvard provided four of Ohio’s largest urban school districts with the resources and expertise to …
Leadership In Higher Education: Handling Faculty Resistance To Technology Through Strategic Planning, Kelli Mcbride
Leadership In Higher Education: Handling Faculty Resistance To Technology Through Strategic Planning, Kelli Mcbride
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
People often recognize leadership in the concrete, mostly by identifying an effective or ineffective leader, but they have a much more difficult time explaining leadership in the abstract – what qualities result in transformational and visionary leadership. Often this lack of understanding does not surface until a crisis or challenge arises in an organization, when a gap occurs between what is and what should be. Higher education faces such challenges, and it needs transformational leadership, especially concerning faculty resistance to technology (Buckley, 2002; Hagner, 2000; Moore, Fowler, & Watson, 2007; Scott, 2003). As many organizations see online learning as their …
The University Chameleon: Identity And Time Issues Faced By Faculty In Dual Positions, Eric Daffron
The University Chameleon: Identity And Time Issues Faced By Faculty In Dual Positions, Eric Daffron
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
My transition into full-time administration came gradually. A young assistant professor of English, I got my first taste of administration when I accepted a position as coordinator of my university’s study abroad programs. Later I served an enriching experience as director of my university’s honors college. With both positions, I remained on faculty, teaching usually a couple of courses each semester. Over time, I felt a certain dissonance in my dual role. A double agent of sorts,1 I felt pulled-in terms of time and especially identity-between my role as faculty member and my role as administrator. In fact, I came …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Empowerment And Organizational Commitment, Gholamreza Jandaghi, Reza Borghei, Hasan Matin, Nasrin Dastani
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
A rapidly changing environment threatens the survival of many organizations. The global economy propelled by booming regional economies, new media and information technology, universal consumer cultures, emerging global standards, and opportunities for corporate cost-sharing, has dramatically changed the environment in which organizations exist today (Ohema,1998,p.17). The survival of many organizations is threatened, in part, by reluctance to adapt to the changing environment. “Ecology evolutionary theory suggests that uncertain, volatile environments will support diverse organizational forms and that the apparent winners will fluctuate from time to time as conditions change” ( Hannan and Freeman, 1989, p.27).
Computerized Provider Order Entry Implementation: Provider And Hospital Leadership Impacts On Success, Elizabeth J. Walker
Computerized Provider Order Entry Implementation: Provider And Hospital Leadership Impacts On Success, Elizabeth J. Walker
Theses and Graduate Projects
Healthcare organizations are consistently exhausting efforts to improve their patient safety standards and outcomes, especially those that are regulated by federal and state agencies. Many healthcare organizations have chosen to implement an Electronic Health Record (EHR) to facilitate better decision-making and faster tumaround for providers, thus improving patient safety. The EHR allows providers to manage patient care with the help of decision support functions, and with greater accessibility to the patient's information. One of the components of an EHR is the application of Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE). Although the benefits to both providers and patients have shown to be …

Four-Day Work Week: Old Lessons, New Questions Symposium: Redefining Work: Implications Of The Four-Day Work Week - The Four-Day Work Week: Views From The Ground, Robert C. Bird
Connecticut Law Review
The four-day work week is quickly gaining popularity. The blogosphere is alive with pages describing numerous benefits and recommending it as a practice whose time has come. With Utah’s adoption of the four-day work week, as well as numerous government and private entities considering the shift, “Thank God It’s Thursday” appears poised to become a characteristic of the modern workplace. Not so fast. The fact remains that the four-day work week is not particularly novel, questionably beneficial, and far from inevitable. Academics and practitioners alike were no less enthusiastic about the fourday work week in the early 1970s. Interest faded …
What A Difference A Day Makes, Or Does It - Work/Family Balance And The Four-Day Work Week Symposium: Redefining Work: Implications Of The Four-Day Work Week - Redefining Work: Possibilities And Perils, Michelle A. Travis
Connecticut Law Review
This Article considers the growing reliance that four-day work week advocates have placed on work/family claims. It begins by analyzing whether a compressed work schedule may alleviate work/family conflicts, and more importantly, for whom such benefits are most likely to accrue. While studies consistently find that many workers experience lower levels of work/family conflict when working a compressed schedule, the research also suggests that workers with the most acute work/family conflicts may be the least likely either to obtain or to benefit from a four-day work week design. Nevertheless, the political climate surrounding the four-day work week provides a unique …
Availability Of Treatment To Youth Offenders: Comparison Of Public Versus Private Programs From A National Census, Rebecca A. Yazzie
Availability Of Treatment To Youth Offenders: Comparison Of Public Versus Private Programs From A National Census, Rebecca A. Yazzie
Faculty Publications - College of Social Work
Across the United States, the availability of mental health, substance abuse, and recidivism reduction programs in the juvenile justice system (JJS) varies from none or few to a rich variety of programs. Within the last decade, prison privatization in the adult correctional system has influenced the onset of privatization in the JJS. The differences between public and private sectors in their availability of mental health services and treatment programs to juvenile offenders are understudied. In this article, a secondary analysis of a national census of 3163 juvenile facilities was conducted to determine differences in treatment availability as well as the …
A Correlational Study Of Telework Frequency, Information Communication Technology, And Job Satisfaction Of Home-Based Teleworkers, Shana P. Webster-Trotman
A Correlational Study Of Telework Frequency, Information Communication Technology, And Job Satisfaction Of Home-Based Teleworkers, Shana P. Webster-Trotman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In 2008, 33.7 million Americans teleworked from home. The Telework Enhancement Act (S. 707) and the Telework Improvements Act (H.R. 1722) of 2009 were designed to increase the number of teleworkers. The research problem addressed was the lack of understanding of factors that influence home-based teleworkers' job satisfaction. Job dissatisfaction has been found to have a significant impact on voluntary turnover. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship among telework frequency, information communication technology (ICT), and job satisfaction. The research questions were designed to answer whether correlational relationships exist among telework frequency, ICT, and job satisfaction and …
Project Study: An Action Plan For Implementing Response To Intervention, Leah W. Hamilton
Project Study: An Action Plan For Implementing Response To Intervention, Leah W. Hamilton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 allows schools to utilize response to intervention (RtI) as early intervention to prevent at-risk students from becoming labeled as learning disabled. Using action research methodology and school change theory, the purpose of this project study was to determine the RtI implementation needs of a rural elementary school (LE). The guiding research question was to identify the components of an RtI framework currently being utilized during the pre-referral process at LE. This study employed a qualitative method triangulation design to analyze data from key stakeholders including questionnaires; individual interviews from six reading …
A Phenomenological Study Of Leader Experiences And Reactions To Transformational Change In A Multicampus System, John E. Cech
A Phenomenological Study Of Leader Experiences And Reactions To Transformational Change In A Multicampus System, John E. Cech
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research on organizational change theory confirms the importance of leaders' ability to establish a sense of urgency, create institutional support for change, develop a vision, communicate the vision, empower others toward action, generate results, and ultimately create change in the organizational culture. Organizational change in nested systems, in which CEOs of individual units report upward through a state, regional, or corporate hierarchy, has not been extensively studied. To address this gap in the literature, this phenomenological study explored perceptions of college leaders who in 2002-2003 participated in the transformation of seven 2-year technical colleges into a community college system. The …
The Relationship Between Leadership Styles And Performance Success In Hospitals, Beverly J. D. Hernandez
The Relationship Between Leadership Styles And Performance Success In Hospitals, Beverly J. D. Hernandez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Upheavals in the health care landscape threaten the sustainability of contemporary hospital organizations. Yet there is limited research regarding the characteristics of leaders within successful hospitals. The problem is the leadership styles needed to effectively run hospital organizations have not been identified and/or established. The purpose of this study was to develop a model of congruent leadership styles linked to the success of hospitals in one metropolitan city. The research questions sought to uncover (a) consistent leadership styles within successful hospitals, and (b) what, if any, relationship exists between leadership styles and measures of success. Examination of the literature uncovered …
