In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you. But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, …

Role Of The Osmotic Stress Regulatory Pathway In Morphogenesis And Secondary Metabolism In Filamentous Fungi, Ana M. Calvo, R.M. Duran, J.W. Cary Jan 2010

Role Of The Osmotic Stress Regulatory Pathway In Morphogenesis And Secondary Metabolism In Filamentous Fungi, Ana M. Calvo, R.M. Duran, J.W. Cary

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Environmental stimuli trigger an adaptative cellular response to optimize the probability of survival and proliferation. In eukaryotic organisms from mammals to fungi osmotic stress, mainly through the action of the high osmolarity glycerol (HOG) pathway, leads to a response necessary for adapting and surviving hyperosmotic environments. In this review we show that the osmoadaptative response is conserved but not identical in different fungi. The osmoadaptative response system is also intimately linked to morphogenesis in filamentous fungi, including mycotoxin producers. Previous studies indicate that the response to osmotic stress is also coupled to the biosynthesis of natural products, including mycotoxins.

How Folk Classification Interacts With Ethnoecological Knowledge: A Case Study From Chiapas, Mexico, Aaron M. Lampman Jan 2010

How Folk Classification Interacts With Ethnoecological Knowledge: A Case Study From Chiapas, Mexico, Aaron M. Lampman

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Folk taxonomies play a role in expanding or contracting the larger domain of ethnoecological knowledge that influences when and how cultural groups use living things. This paper demonstrates that ethnomycological classification is limited by utilitarian concerns and examines how Tzeltal Maya ethnoecological knowledge, although detailed and sophisticated, is heavily influenced by the structure of the folk classification system. Data were collected through 12 months of semi-structured and structured interviews, including freelists (n=100), mushroom collection with collaborators (n=5), open-ended interviewing (n=50), structured responses to photos (n=30), structured responses to mushroom specimens (n=15), and sentence frame substitutions (n=20). These interviews were focused …

Factors Affecting Enrolment Of Plhiv Into Art Services In India, Avina Sarna, Damodar Bachani, Mary Philip Sebastian, Ruchi Sogarwal, Madhusudana Battala

HIV and AIDS

At the end of 2007, India had an estimated 2.31 million people living with HIV, and an HIV prevalence of 0.34 percent. Despite the low HIV prevalence, these statistics place India among countries with a large number of people living with HIV (PLHIV). To address the care and support needs of PLHIV, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, initiated a national program in 2004 to provide free antiretroviral therapy (ART) for PLHIV. By March 2009, there were 211 functioning Antiretroviral Treatment Centers and 254 Community Care Centers across the country, and to date 217,781 individuals are …

Ranches With Wolves: How Straight Talk Is The Salvation Of Open Range In The Northern Rockies, James Wilson Grant

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Since U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reintroduced gray wolves into Yellowstone National Park and central Idaho in 1995 and 1996, conflicts between wolves and livestock have increased as the wolf population has grown and expanded. Ranchers in wolf country face a changing ecology that now includes wolves as a keystone predator, and failing to adapt to the change has meant hard losses for some ranchers. In other cases, ranchers have found ways to compensate for the reintroduced predator. These ranching situations, both the unchanged and the changed, offer lessons to livestock producers who can anticipate wolves becoming part of the …

Human Predation Risk And Elk Behavior In Heterogeneous Landscapes, Shawn M. Cleveland Jan 2010

Human Predation Risk And Elk Behavior In Heterogeneous Landscapes, Shawn M. Cleveland

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Elk (Cervus elaphus) are increasing in fragmented landscapes that result from exurban human development throughout western North America. This problem is increasing human-wildlife conflicts and represents a significant new challenge to wildlife managers. Elk hunting must be intensively managed, if allowed at all, to reduce public relations problems. For example, the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks has focused three hunts on a rapidly growing (~11% annually) elk herd in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) of Missoula, Montana, USA. Their goals were to reduce population growth rate, crop depredation, and habituation to humans. However, little was known about the indirect …

Interpretation And Adherence To The Prescriptive Elements Of The Word Of Wisdom Among Latter-Day Saints, Rick B. Jorgensen, Ray M. Merrill Jan 2010

Interpretation And Adherence To The Prescriptive Elements Of The Word Of Wisdom Among Latter-Day Saints, Rick B. Jorgensen, Ray M. Merrill

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also called Mormon) has a health code generally referred to as the "Word of Wisdom"; Written in 1833, this code includes various dietary and other recommendations, including abstention from using tobacco and drinking alcohol, coffee, and tea. Although some of these dietary behaviors tend to be strictly followed by Church members, others are not. The purpose of this paper is to identify how a homogeneous group of young church members interpret and adhere to the proscriptive and prescriptive directives of the Word of Wisdom.

Mzm1 Influences A Labile Pool Of Mitochondrial Zinc Important For Respiratory Function, Aaron Atkinson, Oleh Khalimonchuk, Pamela Smith, Hana Sabic, David Eide, Dennis R. Winge

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Zinc is essential for function of mitochondria as a cofactor for

several matrix zinc metalloproteins. We demonstrate that a

labile cationic zinc component of low molecular mass exists in

the yeast mitochondrial matrix. This zinc pool is homeostatically

regulated in response to the cellular zinc status. This pool

of zinc is functionally important because matrix targeting of a

cytosolic zinc-binding protein reduces the level of labile zinc

and interferes with mitochondrial respiratory function. We

identified a series of proteins that modulate the matrix zinc

pool, one of which is a novel conserved mitochondrial protein

designated Mzm1. Mutant mzm1∆ cells …

Fatty acid transport proteins (FATPs) are bifunctional proteins, which transport long chain fatty acids into cells and activate very long chain fatty acids by esterification with coenzyme A. In an effort to understand the linkage between cellular fatty acid transport and the pathology associated with excessive accumulation of exogenous fatty acids, we targeted FATP-mediated fatty acid transport in a high throughput screen of more than 100,000 small diverse chemical compounds in yeast expressing human FATP2 (hsFATP2). Compounds were selected for their ability to depress the transport of the fluorescent long chain fatty acid analogue, C1-BODIPY-C12. Among …

Brown Midrib Mutations And Their Importance To The Utilization Of Maize, Sorghum, And Pearl Millet Lignocellulosic Tissues, Scott E. Sattler, Deanna L. Funnell-Harris, Jeffrey F. Pedersen Jan 2010

Brown Midrib Mutations And Their Importance To The Utilization Of Maize, Sorghum, And Pearl Millet Lignocellulosic Tissues, Scott E. Sattler, Deanna L. Funnell-Harris, Jeffrey F. Pedersen

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Brown midrib mutants have been isolated in maize (Zea mays), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) and pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) arising by either spontaneous or chemical mutagenesis. The characteristic brown coloration of the leaf mid veins is associated with reduced lignin content and altered lignin composition, traits useful to improve forage digestibility for livestock. Brown midrib phenotype is correlated with two homologous loci in maize (bm1 and bm3) and sorghum (bmr6 and bmr12), which encode cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) and a caffeic O-methyl transferase (COMT). These enzymes are involved in the last …

Regulation Of Septum Formation By The Bud3–Rho4 Gtpase Module In Aspergillus Nidulans, Haoyu Si, Daniela Justa-Schuch, Stephan Seiler, Steven D. Harris

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The ability of fungi to generate polarized cells with a variety of shapes likely reflects precise temporal and spatial control over the formation of polarity axes. The bud site selection system of Saccharomyces cerevisiae represents the best-understood example of such a morphogenetic regulatory system. However, the extent to which this system is conserved in the highly polarized filamentous fungi remains unknown. Here, we describe the functional characterization and localization of the Aspergillus nidulans homolog of the axial bud site marker Bud3. Our results show that AnBud3 is not required for polarized hyphal growth per se, but is involved in septum …

The Effect Of Field Pea (Pisum Sativum L.) Companion Crop Management On Red Clover (Trifolium Pratense L.) Establishment And Productivity, Branko Cupina, Dorde Krstic, Aleksandar Mikic, Pero Eric, Savo Vuckovic, Borivoj Pejic

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Field pea (Pisum sativum L.) has the potential to be a suitable companion crop for the establishment of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), as it is fast growing and is harvested early, and thus reduces the duration of competition and allows light to be transmitted through its canopy to an undersown species more so than other companion crops such as small grains. The aim of this study was to determine the suitability of field pea as a companion crop for red clover, and in particular to determine the effect of pea cultivar and plant population density. The field experiment comprised …

A New Study On The Bacteria Of Agrotis Segetum Schiff. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) And Their Insecticidal Activities, Ali̇ Sevi̇m, Zi̇hni̇ Demi̇rbağ, İsmai̇l Demi̇r

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Agrotis segetum Schiff. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is one of the most serious pests of nearly all vegetables in Turkey. In this study, to find a more effective and safe biological control agent, the bacterial flora of Agrotis segetum were investigated in larvae collected from different populations in the vegetable fields of the Black Sea region of Turkey, and 9 bacterial isolates were cultured from these populations. Seven of these bacteria were determined and characterized at the species level and the rest were characterized at the genus level. Morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics of the bacterial isolates were determined by conventional and …
