Neonatal Intrahepatic Cholestasis Caused By Citrin Deficiency In Two Malaysian Siblings: Outcome At One Year Of Life, M.K. Thong, Christopher Chiong Meng Boey, J.S. Sheng, M. Ushikai, K. Kobayashi
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
We report two Malaysian siblings with neonatal intrahepatic cholestasis caused by citrin deficiency (NICCD). The younger sibling, a six-month-old Chinese girl, presented with prolonged neonatal jaundice, and was investigated for biliary atresia. Urine metabolic screen showed the presence of urinary-reducing sugars, and she was treated with a lactose-free formula. NICCD was suspected based on the clinical history, examination and the presence of urinary citrulline. Mutation study of the SLC25A13 gene showed the compound heterozygotes, 851del4 and IVS16ins3kb, which confirmed the diagnosis of NICCD in the patient and her three-year-old female sibling, who also had unexplained neonatal cholestasis. Longterm dietary advice, …
Neural Mechanisms Of Swallowing And Effects Of Taste And Other Stimuli On Swallow Initiation, H.M. Zakir
Neural Mechanisms Of Swallowing And Effects Of Taste And Other Stimuli On Swallow Initiation, H.M. Zakir
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Swallowing involves several motor processes such as bolus formation and intraoral transport of a food bolus (oral stage) and a series of visceral events that occur in a relatively fixed timed sequence but are to some degree modifiable (pharyngeal stage or swallow reflex). Reflecting the progressive aging of society, patients with swallowing disorders (i.e., dysphagia) are increasing. Therefore, there is expanding social demand for the development of better rehabilitation treatment of dysphagic patients. To date, many dysphagia diets have been developed and are available commercially to help bring back the pleasure of mealtimes to dysphagia patients. Texture modification of food …

Reflections On The Significance Of The Relationship Between Mind And Body In Medicine, Christopher Chiong Meng Boey
Reflections On The Significance Of The Relationship Between Mind And Body In Medicine, Christopher Chiong Meng Boey
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
In the last three centuries, medicine has focused predominantly on the physical body as the source of disease, placing very little importance on the mind. However, the significance of mind-body interactions in medicine is now increasingly being recognised. True health must include both the physical body and the mind. This article traces our concepts of the relationship between mind and body since primitive times and explores its relevance to the maintenance of health. (JUMMEC 2010; 13(1): 3-11)

Type 2 Diabetes And Vascular Complications: A Pathophysiologic View, K.A.A. Ahmed, S. Muniandy, I.S. Ismail
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Diabetes mellitus (DM) represents a range of metabolic disorders characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from insulin deficiency or insulin resistance or both. Hyperglycemia, the primary clinical manifestation of diabetes, is strongly associated with development of the diabetic complications. Complications caused by hyperglycaemia involve damage to the small vessels such as in neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy, and large blood vessels as in cardiovascular diseases. It is well known established that in diabetes, long-term complications ensue from abnormal regulation of glucose metabolism. In fact, all manifestations of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease are substantially more common in patients …

Not Just One Of The Boys: A Post-Feminist Critique Of Title Ix's Vision For Gender Equity In Sports, Dionne L. Koller
Connecticut Law Review
Title IX as applied to athletics is a high-profile, controversial public policy effort that has opened up the world of athletics to millions of girls and women. Yet as it is both celebrated for the opportunities it has created for women, and decried as going too far at the expense of men, a reality persists that women do not pursue or remain committed to sport in numbers comparable to men. This Article seeks to explore this phenomenon by moving the discourse beyond the debate over whether women are inherently as “interested” in sport as men to examine the conception of …

Nutritional And Management Methods To Decrease Nitrogen Losses From Beef Feedlots, Galen Erickson, Terry Klopfenstein
Nutritional And Management Methods To Decrease Nitrogen Losses From Beef Feedlots, Galen Erickson, Terry Klopfenstein
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Nitrogen losses from open beef feedlots are a concern. Methods that decrease volatilization losses will lead to greater manure N, which is likely to be beneficial in open lot beef operations. Twelve or more pens were dedicated to N research whereby N intake, retention, and excretion were quantified and a mass balance conducted using manure, runoff, soil balance, and loss quantities. The objective was to decrease N volatilization losses or increase manure N or both. Dietary CP affects N excretion and N volatilization losses. Four experiments across 2 yr compared industry average CP (13%) to diets that were phase-fed to …

Regulating Consumer Demand In Insurance Markets, Daniel Schwarcz
Regulating Consumer Demand In Insurance Markets, Daniel Schwarcz
Articles
In recent years, it has become increasingly clear that Expected Utility Theory (EUT) is a remarkably poor theory of how and why individuals purchase insurance. However, the normative implications of this conclusion have remained largely unexplored. This Article takes up this issue. It argues that many observed deviations from EUT are likely the result of mistakes, in the sense that consumers would act differently than they do if they possessed perfect information and cognitive resources. From this perspective, regulatory interventions designed to improve consumer decision-making about insurance are potentially desirable. At the same time, the Article argues that some deviations …

Returning Home: Women In Post-Conflict Societies, Naomi Cahn, Dina Francesca Haynes, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin
Articles
This paper explores the situation of women returning to their homes and communities after their countries have experienced major conflicts. In that context, it assesses the range of barriers and challenges that women face and offers some thinking to addresses and remedy these complex issues. As countries face the transition process, they can begin to measure the conflict’s impact on the population and the civil infrastructure. Not only have people been displaced from their homes, but, typically, health clinics, schools, roads, businesses, and markets have deteriorated substantially. While the focus is on humanitarian aid in the midst of and during …

The Need For Universal Preschool In America, Claudia Delgado
The Need For Universal Preschool In America, Claudia Delgado
Honors Capstones
There is currently a problem regarding the amount of children without Pre-Kindergarten -due to the lack of income or knowledge about the importance of an early education. Research shows how detrimental it is for children not to take advantage of a time in their lives when their brains are rapidly growing. The lack of an education to nurture their development reduces their success in life -especially if they come from harsh family conditions such as poverty, domestic violence, or if these children were born with special needs. The Universal Preschool program would provide ALL children with this important education. I …

Comparative Leaf Decomposition Rates Including A Non-Native Species In An Urban Ozark Stream, Sarah E. Lewis, Arthur V. Brown
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Leaf decomposition of three species of native Ozark vegetation was compared to that of one nonnative invasive species. Leaves were placed in an urban gravel-bed stream for 23 days. Changes in mass and condition of the leaves were assessed along with stream temperature, flow, width, depth and discharge. Species native to Eastern North American forests were sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), dogwood (Cornus florida), and redbud (Cercis canadensis). The nonnative species, Japanese (Amur) honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) comprised approximately 80% of the understory vegetation within the riparian zone of the study reach. After 23 days, Sycamore lost 24.6% mass, dogwood lost 30%, redbud …
