Atherosclerosis And Antioxidants, Yehoshua Lewis Jan 2010

Atherosclerosis And Antioxidants, Yehoshua Lewis

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Cellular lipid oxidation is a known cause for the cascade leading to the formation of lipid laden foam cells, which can cause of atherosclerosis. While statins and antioxidants have recently come under question in the amelioration of atherosclerosis, Flavonoids have recently been touted as a powerful antioxidant and suppresser of atherosclerosis. This paper will attempt to show why statins and vitamin E have come under scrutiny, and how the desired effects of Flavonoids can be attributed to the role it plays in increased paraoxonase-1 activity (a known anti inflammatory associated with HDL), decreased C- Reactive protein activity, and increased nitric …

Exposure To Cold But Not Exercise Increases Carbon Turnover Rates In Specific Tissues Of A Passerine, U. Bauchinger, J. Keil, R. A. Mckinney, J. M. Starck, Scott R. Mcwilliams Jan 2010

Exposure To Cold But Not Exercise Increases Carbon Turnover Rates In Specific Tissues Of A Passerine, U. Bauchinger, J. Keil, R. A. Mckinney, J. M. Starck, Scott R. Mcwilliams

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Carbon turnover differs between tissues within an animal, but the extent to which ecologically relevant increases in metabolism affect carbon turnover rates is largely unknown. We tested the energy expenditure and protein turnover hypotheses that predict increased carbon turnover, either in association with increased daily energy expenditure, or in concert with tissue-specific increased protein metabolism. We used stable-isotope-labeled diets to quantify the rate of carbon turnover in 12 different tissues for three groups of zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata): cold-exposed birds kept at ambient temperatures below their thermoneutral zone, exercised birds that were flown for 2 h per day …

Equity In Community Forests In Bhutan, Bill Buffum, A. Lawrence, K. J. Temphel Jan 2010

Equity In Community Forests In Bhutan, Bill Buffum, A. Lawrence, K. J. Temphel

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

The equity of Bhutan's new community forestry program was assessed after three years of experience with timber harvesting. Despite the impressive achievements of community forestry programs elsewhere in South Asia, there is increasing evidence that poor and disadvantaged members of community forestry management groups benefit less than other members. We compared this with the situation in Bhutan. All households in three villages were ranked by socio-economic status before analyzing the distribution of community forest (CF) products. A household survey and focus group interviews provided more detailed information on how the socio-economic groups participated in the CFs. Economic equity (distribution of …

Cholera: An Overview Of A Disease, Ezriel Leifer Jan 2010

Cholera: An Overview Of A Disease, Ezriel Leifer

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Although the disease, cholera, has been recognized since antiquity, the bacteria responsible for causing it was only discovered in the mid-19th century. Since 1817, cholera has spread on a global basis to cause seven pandemics. According to information reported to the World Health Organization in 1999, almost 8,500 people died and another 223,000 became sick with cholera worldwide. During the period between full outbreaks, the cholera organism, Vibrio cholerae, thrives in brackish waters, in harmless as well as disease-causing forms. Vibrio cholerae is just one of a variety of ocean-borne microbes that can sicken humans via seafood, drinking water, and …

Pompe’S Disease And The Effects Of Alpha-Glucosidase Deficiency, Aaron Richler Jan 2010

Pompe’S Disease And The Effects Of Alpha-Glucosidase Deficiency, Aaron Richler

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The following is an excerpt from the introduction of this article: The energy that the body needs in order to function is obtained from carbohydrates that we get through our diet. These carbohydrates are monosacharides, disaccharides and polysacharides. The polysaccharides and disaccharides are hydrolyzed to monosaccharide’s such glucose (which comprises roughly 80%) fructose and galactose. Most cells convert the fructose and galactose to glucose. The body can use the glucose or store it. If energy is needed, glucose can be oxidized through the many reactions of glycolysis which gives a net production of 2 ATP and 2 NADH from one …

Prevention Of Fetal Alcohol Damage In Northern Native Communities: A Practical School-Based Approach, Steven Jacquier, Judith Kleinfeld, David Gilliam

SPS Faculty Publications

This article describes a Fetal Alcohol Syndrome prevention program, "FASD in Lab Mice," that had a dramatic effect in increasing Alaska Native students' understanding of the lifelong neurological and physical damage caused by drinking during pregnancy and, more importantly, led them to engage in active prevention efforts in their own and other Native communities. Informational programs typically used in the schools create little student interest and students often do not see connections between their own experience and the atypically extreme examples such prevention programs tend to emphasize. The "FASD in Lab Mice" prevention program, using actual experiments conducted by the …

Genetic Basis Of Growth Adaptation Of Escherichia Coli After Deletion Of Pgi, A Major Metabolic Gene, Pep Charusanti, Tom M. Conrad, Eric M. Knight, Karthik Venkataraman, Nicole L. Fong, Bin Xie, Yuan Gao, Bemhard O. Palsson

Study of Biological Complexity Publications

Bacterial survival requires adaptation to different environmental perturbations such as exposure to antibiotics, changes in temperature or oxygen levels, DNA damage, and alternative nutrient sources. During adaptation, bacteria often develop beneficial mutations that confer increased fitness in the new environment. Adaptation to the loss of a major non-essential gene product that cripples growth, however, has not been studied at the whole-genome level. We investigated the ability of Escherichia coli K-12 MG1655 to overcome the loss of phosphoglucose isomerase (pgi) by adaptively evolving ten replicates of E. coli lackingpgi for 50 days in glucose M9 minimal medium and …

Rainfed and Irrigated Production in Argentina

Martin Pasman, an Argentine agronomist with a master’s degree in business administration, began his career as a consultant to farmers and has experience in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil, where he was instrumental in helping to develop 80,000 hectares in the western part of the Cerrado area. His farming experience stems from his family’s farms, located in five areas of Argentina. Most are rainfed, but one area receives less than 500 millimeters of rain annually. Pasman also runs an irrigation business serving 80 percent of the Argentine market, giving him vast experience in developing …

Respiratory Disease In Young Dairy Calves., A. D. Garcia, R. Daly Jan 2010

Respiratory Disease In Young Dairy Calves., A. D. Garcia, R. Daly

Dairy Science Publication Database

Respiratory disease is the second leading cause of death losses (scours is the first) in un-weaned heifer calves. Respiratory problems have increased by 34 percent in the last twenty years resulting in nearly 21 percent of all newborn calf losses (NAHMS. 2007). Heifers that survive continue to perform poorly as adult cows. In order to prevent this costly problem it is important to address both determinant and predisposing causes.

When a child is born, a mother can choose to breastfeed her infant or to use an alternative source of nutrition such as formula. To choose properly, the mother must be informed about the pros and cons of each method of feeding. This paper will elaborate on the process of breastfeeding and present some of the benefits that are conferred to both infant and mother through the act of breastfeeding, benefits that formula does not provide. Breastfeeding positively affects infants in both the short- and long-term by providing protection from infectious diseases, fostering the psychological bond with their mothers, and …

Environmental Barriers Contributing To Dental Caries Among Diverse And Underserved Children: Meeting The Challenge In The United States And Iowa, Venus Hernandez

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this literature review of secondary data is to 1) Identify environmental factors such as oral health education, water fluoridation and sealant programs, access to dental insurance, and dental health workforce issues, that may contribute to poor oral health, and 2) Provide recommendations to reduce these barriers that are linked with oral health disparities among children in the United States and Iowa. This literature review concludes that there is a need to consider comprehensive, multiple approaches to address family and community determinants of oral health. Some of these strategies include simultaneous efforts, such as increasing the number of …
