Bite Marks Of The Giant Crocodylian Deinosuchus On Late Cretaceous (Campanian) Bones, David R. Schwimmer Jan 2010

Bite Marks Of The Giant Crocodylian Deinosuchus On Late Cretaceous (Campanian) Bones, David R. Schwimmer

Faculty Bibliography

The giant (~10 m) Late Cretaceous eusuchian crocodylians of the genus Deinosuchus are shown to have left large, blunt, sometimes penetrating bite marks on a significant number of sea turtle shells, and on several dinosaur specimens. The morphology of crocodylian bite marks is generally well documented, and the identification of bite traces specifically attributable to Deinosuchus may be made by reference to their size, age, habitat and prey selection. Deinosuchus species, and bite traces referable to the genus, are present on both sides of the Late Cretaceous Interior Seaway, and known only from Campanian deposits in the USA and northern …

"A Cage Of Ovulating Females" : Mary Breckinridge And The Politics Of Contraception In Rural Appalachia, Dana Allen Johnson Jan 2010

"A Cage Of Ovulating Females" : Mary Breckinridge And The Politics Of Contraception In Rural Appalachia, Dana Allen Johnson

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Mary Breckinridge and the Frontier Nursing Service have been the focus of intense scholarly effort over the last twenty years. Scholarship on Mary Breckinridge has centered on her healthcare reform work in Appalachia and its effects on the local residents and culture. This thesis examines the oral contraceptive trial that the FNS performed in Leslie County in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Although Breckinridge and the FNS maintained a restrictive contraceptive stance, they paradoxically permitted the contraceptive trial to be conducted on their patients in Leslie County. The decision to participate in the contraceptive trial resulted from a complex …

Exploring Obesity And After-School Supervision With Adolescents In Rural West Virginia, Sallie Dawn Richards Jan 2010

Exploring Obesity And After-School Supervision With Adolescents In Rural West Virginia, Sallie Dawn Richards

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Both childhood obesity and the number of children in self-care have increased during the past several decades. Child care arrangements for working parents of middle school children can be a complex problem because unsupervised children who “hang out” with peers after school are more likely to engage in risky behaviors, although unsupervised children at home after school tend to watch more television than their supervised peers. Because children in self-care at home after school tend to engage in more sedentary activities, they may be at greater risk for becoming overweight or obese. The purpose of the present study was to …

Genetic And Environmental Factors Suggest That Dietary Fatty Acid Content, Lipid Metabolism, And Bone Properties Are Key Regulators Of Myeloid Progenitor Cell Frequency, Melinda E. Varney Jan 2010

Genetic And Environmental Factors Suggest That Dietary Fatty Acid Content, Lipid Metabolism, And Bone Properties Are Key Regulators Of Myeloid Progenitor Cell Frequency, Melinda E. Varney

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and its precursors are the result of the dysregulation of hematopoiesis. Hematopoiesis proceeds in a stepwise manner, beginning with hematopoietic stem cells, continuing to develop into various stages of progenitor cells, and finally becoming fully functional blood cells. As this process goes awry, immature, functionless cells of the myeloid lineage proliferate out of control. Discerning how myeloid progenitor frequency is regulated allows for a better understanding of how the process may lose control. Hematopoiesis has been shown to depend on genetic and environmental factors. In this work, I have added to this knowledge base by providing …

Fluprostenol-Induced Mapk Signaling Is Independent Of Aging In Fischer 344/Nniahsd X Brown Norway/Binia Rat Aorta, Kevin M. Rice, Ernest M. Walker, Sunil K. Kakarla, Satyanarayana Paturi, Miaozong Wu, Sumit Narula, Eric R. Blough Jan 2010

Fluprostenol-Induced Mapk Signaling Is Independent Of Aging In Fischer 344/Nniahsd X Brown Norway/Binia Rat Aorta, Kevin M. Rice, Ernest M. Walker, Sunil K. Kakarla, Satyanarayana Paturi, Miaozong Wu, Sumit Narula, Eric R. Blough

MIIR Faculty Research

The factors that regulate vascular mechanotransduction and how this process may be altered with aging are poorly understood and have not been widely studied. Recent data suggest that increased tissue loading can result in the release of prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2α) and other reports indicate that aging diminishes the ability of the aged aorta to activate mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling in response to increased loading. Using ex vivo incubations, here we investigate whether aging affects the ability of the aorta to induce phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK½-MAPK), p38-MAPK, and Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK-MAPK) activation following stimulation …

The Carboxyl-Terminal Segment Of Apolipoprotein A-V Undergoes A Lipid-Induced Conformational Change, Kasuen Mauldin, B. L. Lee, M. Oleszczuk, B. D. Sykes, R. O. Ryan Jan 2010

The Carboxyl-Terminal Segment Of Apolipoprotein A-V Undergoes A Lipid-Induced Conformational Change, Kasuen Mauldin, B. L. Lee, M. Oleszczuk, B. D. Sykes, R. O. Ryan

Faculty Publications

Apolipoprotein (apo) A-V is a 343-residue, multidomain protein that plays an important role in regulation of plasma triglyceride homeostasis. Primary sequence analysis revealed a unique tetraproline sequence (Pro293-Pro296) near the carboxyl terminus of the protein. A peptide corresponding to the 48-residue segment beyond the tetraproline motif was generated from a recombinant apoA-V precursor wherein Pro295 was replaced by Met. Cyanogen bromide cleavage of the precursor protein, followed by negative affinity chromatography, yielded a purified peptide. Nondenaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis verified that apoA-V(296-343) solubilizes phospholipid vesicles, forming a relatively heterogeneous population of reconstituted high-density lipoprotein with Stokes’ diameters>17 nm. At …

Congregational Health And Wellness Ministry Using Locus Of Control To Develop Teaching Methods, Theresa Lee Trivette Jan 2010

Congregational Health And Wellness Ministry Using Locus Of Control To Develop Teaching Methods, Theresa Lee Trivette

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Faith communities have a unique opportunity to help congregational members modify health-seeking behaviors in order to reduce modifiable health risk factors. Health researchers have increased their use of health locus of control as a preferred method for studying health promotion and sick-role behaviors. Targeted education and activities designed from the context of the subjects' health locus of control may provide an effective method to influence people to make positive healthy behavior modifications with a higher likelihood of success because locus of control beliefs have been shown to have direct relationships with healthy behavior choices. The health locus of control theory …

Stretching The Dispute Settlement Understanding: U.S.—Cotton’S Relaxed Interpretation Of Cross-Retaliation In The World Trade Organization, David J. Townsend Jan 2010

Stretching The Dispute Settlement Understanding: U.S.—Cotton’S Relaxed Interpretation Of Cross-Retaliation In The World Trade Organization, David J. Townsend

Richmond Journal of Global Law & Business

In August 2009, the World Trade Organization (“WTO”) au-thorized Brazil to impose sanctions against the United States for its continued subsidization of cotton producers in violation of the WTO Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures (“SCM Agreement”) and the Agreement on Agriculture. The WTO approved Brazil’s use of sanctions outside the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (“GATT”), authorizing cross-retaliation against rights owed to the United States under the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (“TRIPS”). This is the third case of cross- retaliation authorized by a WTO arbitrator under the Understanding on Rules and Procedures Governing the …

Respecting Working Mothers With Infant Children: The Need For Increased Federal Intervention To Develop, Protect And Support A Breastfeeding Culture In The United States, Heather M. Kolinsky Jan 2010

Respecting Working Mothers With Infant Children: The Need For Increased Federal Intervention To Develop, Protect And Support A Breastfeeding Culture In The United States, Heather M. Kolinsky

Scholarly Articles

The author argues that the benefits of breastfeeding are overwhelming and that more needs to be done to ensure that all women have a viable option to continue breastfeeding upon returning to work, particularly the working poor and minorities. Those least likely to breastfeed are more likely to be part of an at risk population in terms of health. Most significantly, the lack of a cohesive policy in the workplace has had a disparate impact on the most vulnerable populations of breastfeeding mothers and their children. The lack of federal protection and a patchwork of protection in the states have …

Mule Deer: A Handbook For Utah Hunters And Landowners, Dennis D. Austin Jan 2010

Mule Deer: A Handbook For Utah Hunters And Landowners, Dennis D. Austin

All USU Press Publications

Mule deer are a familiar sight to residents of Utah and the Intermountain West. Sportsmen hunt them, others seek a glimpse of them while hiking or camping, drivers dodge them, and homeowners sometimes delight, sometimes fret as deer visit backyards and gardens. Deer, many of which live in the towns, cities, and farms that sprawl over their historical habitat, sometimes seem ubiquitous. Useful information about them, either scientific or practical, is less widespread. In this handbook, Dennis Austin fills that need for information, offering a one-stop reference packed with up-to-date knowledge and practical advice on mule deer. Data on deer …
