The Life History And Energy Budget Of Hippocampus Erectus In Tampa Bay, Florida, Nicole M. Dunham
The Life History And Energy Budget Of Hippocampus Erectus In Tampa Bay, Florida, Nicole M. Dunham
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Seahorses, genus Hippocampus erectus, are subject to large and continuously-growing international trade. Concerns with the effects of trade on seahorse population worldwide have led to their international protection by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). In order to manage seahorse populations, we first need to understand their basic biology. The purpose of this project was to establish an energy budget for Hippocampus erectus from Tampa Bay, Florida. A total of 108 specimens were collected throughout Tampa Bay from 2004 to 2007 using 21.3 m offshore seines and 6.1 m otter trawls. …
Growing Alfalfa For Wildlife, Don Ball
Growing Alfalfa For Wildlife, Don Ball
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
Alfalfa has long been recognized as a superb forage crop, which is why it is widely grown for dairy cattle, horses, sheep, and many other types of domesticated forage-consuming animals. Reasons for its popularity include wide adaptation, excellent nutritive value, good yield potential, perennial growth habit, a long growing season, and the fact that (in association with Rhizobium bacteria) it is a nitrogen-fixing legume that does not require periodic applications of nitrogen fertilizer.
Alfalfa Varieties For The Future, Joe Bouton
Alfalfa Varieties For The Future, Joe Bouton
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
When breeding tomorrow’s alfalfa varieties, most groups employ a model of combining traditional plant breeding with biotechnology tools in order to incorporate useful traits. In this model, the conventional variety development process will be the method of choice for most traits where breeders have traditionally made progress such as adaptation, heading date, disease and insect resistance, general persistence conditions such as grazing and traffic tolerance, and even yield. It has been very successful in adding economic value to the forage and livestock operations of many producers (Bouton 2007). These traditionally developed varieties will also be used as the germplasm platform …
Is There A Benefit To Alfalfa Balage?, Gary Bates
Is There A Benefit To Alfalfa Balage?, Gary Bates
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
Making hay in the mid-South has always been a difficult process. High humidity and rainfall often make drying a long, tedious, if not impossible proposition. Over the last few years there has been an increased interest in making round bale silage, or balage, from forage crops. Fermenting alfalfa for storage has several advantages and disadvantages over regular haymaking systems.

Pengetahuan Dan Praktek Keluarga Sadar Gizi Ibu Balita, Fatmah Fatmah
Kesmas

Positive Carotenoid Balance Correlates With Greater Reproductive Performance In A Wild Bird, Rebecca Safran, Kevin J. Mcgraw, Matt Wilkins, Joanna K. Hubbard, Julie Marling
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Background: Carotenoids can confer somatic and reproductive benefits, but most evidence is from captive animal experimentation or single time-point sampling. Another perhaps more informative means by which to assess physiological contributions to animal performance is by tracking an individual’s ability to increase or sustain carotenoids or other health-related molecules over time, as these are likely to be temporally variable.
Methodology/Principal Findings: In a field study of North American barn swallows (Hirundo rustica erythrogaster), we analyzed within-individual changes in carotenoid concentrations by repeatedly sampling the carotenoid profiles of individuals over the course of the breeding season. Our results demonstrate …

Rural Areas Risk Being Overlooked In 2010 Census, William P. O'Hare
Carsey Publications
This issue brief describes how the census is conducted in rural areas, identifies some of the most difficult rural areas to count, and highlights what organizations are doing to ensure a more accurate census count in rural America. It also points out that undercounting by the census can lead to communities not receiving a fair share of federal funding.
