Cardioprotection By Regular Ethanol Consumption: Potential Mechanisms And Clinical Application., Masami Miyamae, Kazuhiro Kaneda, Naochika Domae, Vincent M. Figueredo, M.D.

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

Epidemiological studies demonstrate that excessive drinking is associated with hypertension, cerebral bleeding and loss of cardiac contractility. Conversely, studies have shown that mortality rates for people who regularly drink ethanol in moderation are lower than in abstainers, primarily due to decreased fatal ischemic heart disease. Further, moderate ethanol consumers have lower rates of myocardial infarction compared with abstainers. These beneficial cardiac effects may be due to pleiotropic effects of ethanol on lipids, platelets, and fibrinolytic activity. During the past decade, studies conducted in several animal models have revealed that light to moderate regular ethanol consumption renders hearts more tolerant to …

School Health Fairs Show Potential To Improve Short-Term Learning, Marjorie Freedman Mar 2010

School Health Fairs Show Potential To Improve Short-Term Learning, Marjorie Freedman

Faculty Publications

School-based health fairs, that include a variety of informational and/or “fun” booths, are examples of Level 1 interventions designed to build awareness of a health or nutritional topic or problem.1 Designing, implementing, and evaluating a health fair requires considerable resources. Yet recent examination of their efficacy in increasing knowledge is limited.2, 3 and 4 No research has been conducted on preadolescents, a group whose patterns of behavior and food choices may affect their current and future health status. Currently, almost one third of children and adolescents aged 2 to 19 are overweight or obese.5 Less than 10% of females and …

Sequence Analysis Of Leuconostoc Mesenteroides Bacteriophage Φ1-A4 Isolated From An Industrial Vegetable Fermentation, Jean Lu, Eric Altermann, Frederick Breidt, Sergei Kozyavkin Mar 2010

Sequence Analysis Of Leuconostoc Mesenteroides Bacteriophage Φ1-A4 Isolated From An Industrial Vegetable Fermentation, Jean Lu, Eric Altermann, Frederick Breidt, Sergei Kozyavkin

Faculty Articles

Vegetable fermentations rely on the proper succession of a variety of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) including Leuconostoc mesenteroides. L. mesenteroides initiates the fermentation, producing lactic and acetic acids, CO2, and many flavor compounds. As the fermentation proceeds, L. mesenteroides dies off and other LAB complete the fermentation. Phage infecting L. mesenteroides may significantly influence the die-off of L. mesenteroides. However, no L. mesenteroides phages have been previously sequenced and genetically characterized. Knowledge of more phage genome sequences may provide new insights into phage genomics and phage-host interactions. We have determined the complete genome sequence of L. mesenteroides phage (phi)1-A4, which …

Grant Writing Skill Building: A Business Administration Curriculum Proposal, Dianna Blankenship, Irma S. Jones, Marvin Lovett Mar 2010

Grant Writing Skill Building: A Business Administration Curriculum Proposal, Dianna Blankenship, Irma S. Jones, Marvin Lovett

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

This paper reviews the need for grant writing skills within various types of organizations and the resulting proposal for including grant writing within business administration curriculum at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels. An introduction precedes the results of a survey regarding current grant writing courses within AACSB schools of business and is followed with a specific grant writing curriculum proposal. To grant is to give, and thousands of government agencies, corporations, foundations and trusts disburse billions of dollars each year. Recipients of these grants include many employers of business administration program graduates including non-profit entities, educational institutions, and business organizations. …

  1. The best way to preserve chile depends on how you plan to use it and your available storage space. Frozen or canned chile is best for chile rellenos and salsas. Stews can use frozen, canned or dried chile. Dried chile has minimal storage requirements and is light-weight for taking on camping trips. Pickled chiles can be used on a relish plate or as an ingredient in other dishes.

An Investigation Into Factors Influencing The Sensory Properties Of Selected Irish Grown Organic And Conventional Vegetables, Clare Gilsenan Mar 2010

An Investigation Into Factors Influencing The Sensory Properties Of Selected Irish Grown Organic And Conventional Vegetables, Clare Gilsenan

Doctoral

Research studies conducted on organic produce have given conflicting results whether they have superior sensory qualities when compared to conventionally cultivated produce. The development and implementation of a reliable testing system is therefore required. In this study Irish grown organic and conventional carrots (cv. Nairobi), potatoes (cv. Orla) and tomatoes (cv. Amoroso) were selected for physicochemical (size, colour, dry matter, texture, sugars, o Brix & pH), volatile emissions and sensory analysis (trained and consumer panels). All vegetables were tested in both a raw and cooked state. Few significant differences were apparent between the organic and conventional vegetables for the physicochemical …

Order At The End Of Life: Establishing A Clear And Fair Mechanism For The Resolution Of Futility Disputes, Ashley Bassel

Vanderbilt Law Review

On January 22, 2008, Ruben Betancourt was admitted to Trinitas Regional Medical Center in New Jersey for surgery for malignant thymoma, a cancer of the thymus gland (a small organ underneath the breastbone).' Following surgery, the patient developed brain damage due to lack of oxygen and, as a result, lapsed into unconsciousness. For the next five months, Mr. Betancourt was admitted to various medical facilities and readmitted finally to Trinitas in July 2008 for renal failure. For six more months, the unconscious patient remained in the hospital on an artificial ventilator, receiving renal dialysis and nutrition through tube feeding.

Electrosynthesis Of P-Aminobenzenearsenic Acid, Chun-An Ma, Qin-An Zheng, Qiang Zhou, Ying-Hua Xu Feb 2010

Electrosynthesis Of P-Aminobenzenearsenic Acid, Chun-An Ma, Qin-An Zheng, Qiang Zhou, Ying-Hua Xu

Journal of Electrochemistry

The electrochemical reduction of p-nitrophenyl arsonit acid to p-aminobenzenearsenic acid was studied using controlled-current electrolysis. The results showed that the yield of p-aminobenzenearsenic acid was determinated by the following factors:the concentrations of sulphuric acid, the amount of additive, temperature and the concentrations of p-nitrophenyl arsenic acid. The optimum electrolytic conditions were obtained to be is 10% H2SO4,1% NaCl,80 ℃,25 g/350 mL p-nitrophenyl arsenic acid and 10 A·dm-2.The yield of arsanilic acid could be reached 64.7% under the optimum electrolytic conditions.
