Natural Compounds Isolated From Wild Alaska Bog Blueberries Intervene With Molecular Targets Of Neuroinflammation, Sally Jane Gustafson May 2010

Natural Compounds Isolated From Wild Alaska Bog Blueberries Intervene With Molecular Targets Of Neuroinflammation, Sally Jane Gustafson

Chemistry and Biochemistry

NADPH Oxidase (NOX) has emerged as a key mediator of inflammatory processes that are prevalent in acute and chronic pathologies of the nervous system, cardiovascular system, and the immune system. Activation of NOX results in the formation of superoxide, a specific type of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Excessive accumulation of superoxide causes severe oxidative stress and ultimately, progressive cellular damage and degeneration. Despite the implications of NOX in a multitude of pathologies, pharmaceutical interventions against this molecular target remain non-existent. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables has immense health benefits beyond the high content of antioxidant compounds. Dietary intake …

Micro-Hardiness Agriculture Zones In The North Star Borough, Alaska: Past And Future Scenarios, Ellen W. Hatch May 2010

Micro-Hardiness Agriculture Zones In The North Star Borough, Alaska: Past And Future Scenarios, Ellen W. Hatch

Senior Theses

Agriculture in the Arctic is often limited by the low receipt of heat energy, which is often measured in growing degree days (GDD). With the advent of increasingly powerful climate modeling, projection and downscaling techniques, it is becoming possible to examine future climates in high resolution. Recent availability in Alaska has prompted interest in examining the distribution of current and the potential future of local agriculture. The goal of this study was to utilize Scenarios Network for Alaska Planning (SNAP) downscaled, ensemble projections to examine this in terms of GDDs in the Fairbanks North Star Borough of Alaska. Historic and …

Use Of Anthropogenic Foods By Glaucous Gulls (Larus Hyperboreus) In Northern Alaska, Emily L. Weiser May 2010

Use Of Anthropogenic Foods By Glaucous Gulls (Larus Hyperboreus) In Northern Alaska, Emily L. Weiser

Biological Sciences

"Glaucous Gulls are abundant predators in northern Alaska and prey upon several bird species of conservation concern. To assess the benefit gulls may receive from scavenging garbage, I studied diet and reproduction at eight to ten breeding colonies in northern Alaska in 2008-2009. Garbage occurrence in diet was positively correlated with fledging rate; thus any development that increased available garbage could potentially subsidize gull populations through enhanced reproductive success. Garbage could also increase gull populations by enhancing subadult survival. Subadult gulls around the city of Barrow consumed much more garbage than breeding adults, which apparently switch to a mostly natural …

Trichodectes Canis, An Invasive Ectoparasite Of Alaskan Wolves: Detection Methods, Current Distribution, And Ecological Correlates Of Spread, Theresa M. Woldstad May 2010

Trichodectes Canis, An Invasive Ectoparasite Of Alaskan Wolves: Detection Methods, Current Distribution, And Ecological Correlates Of Spread, Theresa M. Woldstad

Biological Sciences

Trichodectes canis, (Ischnocera: Trichodectidae), was first documented on Alaska gray wolves (Canis lupis) in 1981. Two hypotheses may explain why T. canis was not observed in Alaska until the 1980s. Symptomatic wolves could be predisposed to pediculosis, whereas mild infestations outside the observed infestation region are undetected by visual inspection. A second possible explanation is that T. canis is an invasive ectoparasite, and Alaska wolves outside the infestation region do not harbor lice. We examined wolf hides from December 2003 to February 2009, to investigate potential sampling locations, determine T. canis current distribution within Alaska, and investigate potential ecological correlates …

Storage And Breakdown Of Starch Aid P. Parviflorus In Leaf Re-Greening After Nitrogen Deficiency, Kevin A. Korus, M. Elizabeth Conley, Erin E. Blankenship, Ellen T. Paparozzi

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

Plectranthus parviflorus, common Swedish ivy does not lose leaves when it is deprived of nitrogen. Instead this plant retains its yellow leaves and upon reintroduction of nitrogen will re-green and start to grow. In two experiments, rooted cuttings of common Swedish ivy were grown with (150 ppm N) and without nitrogen for 3 weeks. After some plants were sampled the others were either switched or kept at 0 or 150 ppm N and allowed to grow for another 3 weeks. After another sampling, plants were again switched or kept at 0 or 150 ppm N for a final 3 weeks. …

Preferential Fish Consumption Based On Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Mercury Concentrations For Maximum Health Benefits, Katrina Smith May 2010

Preferential Fish Consumption Based On Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Mercury Concentrations For Maximum Health Benefits, Katrina Smith

Honors Theses

The regular consumption of seafood offers a variety of protective effects, including the reduction of the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, due to the presence of omega-3 fatty acids in fish. These protective effects may be diminished by the contamination of seafood by mercury. Mercury increases the risk of cardiovascular problems and impedes neurological development. The objective of this project was to determine the fish species that are appropriate for consumption based on low levels of mercury and recommended intake levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Species that are high in omega-3s and low in mercury include salmon, trout and …

Water Resources In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Mali, Ria Elise O'Brien May 2010

Water Resources In Sub-Saharan Africa: The Case Of Mali, Ria Elise O'Brien

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The world is experiencing the first effects of the water crisis and its importance will become more prevalent in the next few decades. In this study, the case is made that there are steps that can be taken that can improve the standard of living for people by addressing the water needs of both rural and urban areas affected by the water crisis. If the standard of living was increased using the advice given in the thesis, Mali would then serve as an example for what could be done right in other arid areas.

Whole Body Periodic Acceleration Reduces Levels Of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness After Eccentric Exercise, Daniel H. Serravite May 2010

Whole Body Periodic Acceleration Reduces Levels Of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness After Eccentric Exercise, Daniel H. Serravite

Open Access Dissertations

Context: Several recovery strategies have been used, with limited effectiveness, to reduce the muscle discomfort or pain and the diminished muscle performance following a bout of unaccustomed physical activity, a condition known as delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS). Muscle damage in this condition is associated with mechanical disruption of the muscle and connective tissue and inflammation and increased oxidative stress. Low frequency, low intensity, whole body periodic acceleration (WBPA) that increases nitric oxide (NO) release from vascular endothelium into the circulation through increased pulsatile shear stress offers a potential solution. This is because endothelial derived nitric oxide has anti-inflammatory, …

Caffeine Enhances Upper Body Strength In Resistance-Trained Women, Erica Goldstein, Patrick L. Jacobs, Michael Whitehurst, Tina Penhollow, Jose Antonio

Department of Health and Human Performance Faculty Articles

BACKGROUND:

Research has indicated that low-to-moderate dosages of caffeine supplementation are ergogenic for sustained endurance efforts as well as high-intensity exercise. The effects of caffeine supplementation on strength-power performance are equivocal, with some studies indicating a benefit and others demonstrating no change in performance. The majority of research that has examined the effects of caffeine supplementation on strength-power performance has been carried out in both trained and untrained men. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the acute effects of caffeine supplementation on strength and muscular endurance in resistance-trained women.

METHODS:

In a randomized manner, 15 women consumed …

Ecuador: Chevron Squanders Money As Lawsuit Nears End, Luis Ángel Saavedra

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

Chevron (formerly ChevronTexaco) wasted millions of dollars to delay the trial brought against it by Ecuador's Amazonian Indians and campesinos for the environmental disaster caused by 20 years of oil exploitation. The verdict is expected to go against the company and to be handed down within the next two months. In 2001, Texaco Petroleum Company was bought by Chevron, which then became ChevronTexaco until 2005 when Chevron dropped Texaco from its name. Texaco extracted petroleum in the Ecuadoran Amazon from 1967 to 1990 in a joint venture with state-owned Petroecuador. As part of its operations, the company built an oil …

Cell Wall/Surface Proteome Of Candida Albicans: Its Application In Rapid Identification Of Yeast Species By Mass Signature And Characterization By In Vitro And In Vivo Chemical Labelings, Jiang Qian May 2010

Cell Wall/Surface Proteome Of Candida Albicans: Its Application In Rapid Identification Of Yeast Species By Mass Signature And Characterization By In Vitro And In Vivo Chemical Labelings, Jiang Qian

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that may cause mucutaneous infection and/or disseminated candidasis if the host defense system is impaired (such as those in HIV patients). Cell surface of C. albicans is the frontier where initial interplay between host-pathogen takes place and therefore is of great importance in understanding the mechanism of hostpathogen interaction. MALDI-TOF-MS analysis of intact fungal cells yielded mass signatures for rapid species differentiation, strain grouping and yeast morphogenesis monitoring. Cell surface biotinylations at low temperature (4°C), enzymatic digestion of the intact fungal cell surface proteins ("whole cell shaving"), biotin-avidin affinity enrichment of biotinylated peptides, …

Disrupting The Impact Of Socio-Contextual Disadvantage On School Readiness Skill Attainment Among Preschool Children: The Role Of Head Start Attendance, Kristin Leigh Callahan May 2010

Disrupting The Impact Of Socio-Contextual Disadvantage On School Readiness Skill Attainment Among Preschool Children: The Role Of Head Start Attendance, Kristin Leigh Callahan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Created in 1965, Head Start is the longest running national school readiness program in the United States. Head Start was developed to improve children's social and academic readiness for kindergarten and to reduce the academic achievement gap between impoverished and more affluent children. However, questions about the effectiveness of Head Start have trouble the program since its inception. Head Start children often experience considerably more sociocontextual risk, specifically in the form of more economic disadvantage, maternal psychological distress, and dangerous neighborhoods. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the extent to which attending Head Start buffers children from …

Identification And Impact Of Standard Treatment Protocols On The Impairments And Activity Limitations Related To Lower Extremity Lymphedema, Kevin Robert Kunkel May 2010

Identification And Impact Of Standard Treatment Protocols On The Impairments And Activity Limitations Related To Lower Extremity Lymphedema, Kevin Robert Kunkel

Open Access Dissertations

Lower Extremity Lymphedema is a chronic condition of characterized by swelling of body part. It is typically treated with Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT) to reduce volume. While volume reduction is the primary goal of the treatment, third party payers often require the presence of activity limitations in order to qualify for coverage. The purpose of this dissertation was to identify the types of impairments and functional limitations that occur in this population. A second goal was to determine if volume reduction from CDT is sufficient to resolve the impairments and activity limitations associated with lymphedema, or if traditional physical therapy …

Comparative Transcriptional Profiling Identifies Takeout As A Gene That Regulates Life Span, Johannes Bauer, Michael Antosh, Chengyi Chang, Christoph Schorl, Santharam Kolli, Nicola Neretti, Stephen L. Helfand

Biosciences Research

A major challenge in translating the positive effects of dietary restriction (DR) for the improvement of human health is the development of therapeutic mimics. One approach to finding DR mimics is based upon identification of the proximal effectors of DR life span extension. Whole genome profiling of DR in Drosophila shows a large number of changes in gene expression, making it difficult to establish which changes are involved in life span determination as opposed to other unrelated physiological changes. We used comparative whole genome expression profiling to discover genes whose change in expression is shared between DR and two molecular …
