USU Student Organic Farm Newsletter
Parsley is native to the Mediterranean region of Southern Europe. While it has been cultivated for more than 3000 years, parsley was used medicinally prior to being consumed as a food. The ancient Greeks held parsley to be sacred, using it to not only adorn victors of athletic contests, but also for decorating the tombs of the deceased. While it is uncertain when parsley began to be consumed as a seasoning, it seems to be sometime in the Middle Ages in Europe. Parsley is a key ingredient in several West Asian salads, e.g., tabbouleh which is the national dish of …

Background: Birth weight is negatively associated with cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, but the associations are less well-established in developing populations where birth weight is often unavailable. We studied the association of birth weight and cardiovascular risk, using birth rank as an instrumental variable, in Southern China.
Methods: We used published data on birth weight by birth rank from an appropriate population and baseline data from the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study phases 2 & 3 (2005-8) to examine the adjusted associations, using instrumental variable analysis, of birth weight with clinically measured cardiovascular risk factors and the metabolic syndrome in older …

Comparison Of Dna Extraction Kits For Pcr-Dgge Analysis Of Human Intestinal Microbial Communities From Fecal Specimens, Merlin W. Ariefdjohan, Dennis A. Savaiano, Cindy H. Nakatsu
Department of Nutrition Science Faculty Publications
Background
The influence of diet on intestinal microflora has been investigated mainly using conventional microbiological approaches. Although these studies have advanced knowledge on human intestinal microflora, it is imperative that new methods are applied to facilitate scientific progress. Culture-independent molecular fingerprinting method of Polymerase Chain Reaction and Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) has been used to study microbial communities in a variety of environmental samples. However, these protocols must be optimized prior to their application in order to enhance the quality and accuracy of downstream analyses. In this study, the relative efficacy of four commercial DNA extraction kits (Mobio Ultra …

Stat3 Regulation Of Skeletal Muscle Wasting In Cancer Cachexia, Tufan Aydogdu
Open Access Dissertations
Cachexia is a highly complex syndrome identified by metabolic, hormonal and cytokine-related abnormalities, but can be shortly characterized as accelerated skeletal muscle and adipose tissue loss in the context of a chronic inflammatory response. Cachexia is a debilitating complication of several diseases such as AIDS, sepsis, diabetes, renal failure, burn injury and cancer. Cachexia is responsible for 25-30% of cancer patient deaths. One of the most obvious outcomes of cancer cachexia is the redistribution of the total protein content, namely the depletion of skeletal muscle protein levels and increase in the acute phase response protein levels as a response to …

Effect Of Calcium Supplements On Risk Of Myocardial Infarction And Cardiovascular Events: Meta-Analysis, Mark J. Bolland, Allison Avenell, John A. Baron, A. Grey
Effect Of Calcium Supplements On Risk Of Myocardial Infarction And Cardiovascular Events: Meta-Analysis, Mark J. Bolland, Allison Avenell, John A. Baron, A. Grey
Dartmouth Scholarship
Objective: To investigate whether calcium supplements increase the risk of cardiovascular events.
Osteoporosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in older people. Calcium supplements margin- ally reduce the risk of fracture, and most guidelines recommend adequate calcium intake as an integral part of the prevention or treatment of osteoporosis. Consequently, calcium supplements are commonly used by people over the age of 50. Observational stu- dies suggest that high calcium intake might protect against vascular disease, and the findings are consis- tent with those of interventional studies of calcium sup- plements thatshow improvementin some vascular risk factors. In contrast, …
Conscription And Crime: Evidence From The Argentine Draft Lottery, Sebastian Galiani, Martín A. Rossi, Ernesto Schargrodsky
Conscription And Crime: Evidence From The Argentine Draft Lottery, Sebastian Galiani, Martín A. Rossi, Ernesto Schargrodsky
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
We estimate the causal effect of mandatory participation in the military service on the involvement in criminal activities. We exploit the random assignment of young men to military service in Argentina through a draft lottery to identify this causal effect. Using a unique set of administrative data that includes draft eligibility, participation in the military service, and criminal records, we find that participation in the military service increases the likelihood of developing a criminal record in adulthood. The effects are not only significant for the cohorts that performed military service during war times, but also for those that provided service …

Theses
The results from government surveys are often available wholly or in part to the general public. However the format of this information is not always optimal for distribution or analysis, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III, NHANES III, is one such example. This survey is released as data sets containing a Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) program, a column delimited data file, and documentation. This limits access to the data by requiring a license to read in and query the data. By taking the data in its available format and parsing it into a MySQL database the wealth of …

Policy Analysis: Is There A Relationship Between Required Physical Education In Lower Grades And Adolescent Obesity Rates? A Kentucky Case Study, David A. Gross
Policy Analysis: Is There A Relationship Between Required Physical Education In Lower Grades And Adolescent Obesity Rates? A Kentucky Case Study, David A. Gross
Center of Excellence in Rural Health Presentations
Childhood obesity has emerged as a national epidemic − and one with serious short- and long-term personal health, medical system and economic consequences. The prevalence of obesity more than doubled among U.S. children ages 6 to 11 between 1980 and 2006, while the rate for those from ages 12 to 19 more than tripled. This study analyzes whether required physical education in elementary and/or middle school is associated with lower rates of obesity among U.S. high school students, with an emphasis on those living in Kentucky.
