Maine's General Sales Tax: An Exploration Of Policy Issues And Options, Sarah Rawlings
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
Introduction The role of sales taxation in states’ economies has been a topic of much discussion and controversy since its inception in some states more than 70 years ago. The sales tax has been a critical component of revenue generation for some 98% of states over the last 50 years, but policy-makers and economists have become concerned in recent years about the dwindling revenues being generated by sales taxation in most states.

The Dirt On The Ancient Maya: Soil Chemical Investigations Of Ancient Maya Marketplaces, Daniel Aaron Bair
The Dirt On The Ancient Maya: Soil Chemical Investigations Of Ancient Maya Marketplaces, Daniel Aaron Bair
Theses and Dissertations
Various criteria or lines of evidence have been used to identify ancient Maya marketplaces, including location near trade routes, artifactual evidence of trade, open space adjacent to transportation routes, proximity to public structures, low platforms and rock alignments to denote market spaces, and regular patterns in soil and floor chemical concentrations. Seibal and Mayapán were important economic Maya polities controlling the trade routes at the apex of their civilizations. The objectives of these studies were to apply geochemical and geospatial analyses of the soils and floors from public plazas and household patios, to discover the anthropogenic chemical residues of phosphorus …

De Anima, Dna: A Modified Stump/Aquinas Hylomorphic Model, The Soul And The Identity Of Human Persons, Resurrected, Matthew Grant Mcdaniel
Masters Theses
In contemporary metaphysics, there are two popular options for personal numerical identity (NID) over time: substance dualism and materialism. According to recent arguments by some Christian philosophers, both options conflict with the Christian doctrine of the bodily resurrection. Substance dualism trivializes the physical body for NID (when it has some kind of role in the bodily resurrection), and also is seen to conflict with modern neuroscience. But NID and mind cannot be continued solely by the material body, as versions of the Replacement Argument (from Richard Swinburne and Alvin Plantinga) show. There are good aspects to both options, especially with …

Foreword:
What is Teratology?
“What a piece of work is an embryo!” as Hamlet might have said. “In form and moving how express and admirable! In complexity how infinite!” It starts as a single cell, which by repeated divisions gives rise to many genetically identical cells. These cells receive signals from their surroundings and from one another as to where they are in this ball of cells —front or back, right or left, headwards or tailwards, and what they are destined to become. Each cell commits itself to being one of many types; the cells migrate, combine into tissues, or …
Development And Use Of A Physiologically Based Mathematical Model Describing The Relationships And Contributions Of Macronutrients To Weight And Body Composition Changes, Saori Sakita
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of the dietary macronutrient composition on weight loss has been a controversial issue for decades. During that time, a high-protein, high-fat, and low-carbohydrate diet has been one of the more popular weight loss diets with the public. We hypothesized that a computer simulation model using STELLA software could help to better understanding the effect of the dietary macronutrient composition on weight loss. We calculated daily total oxidation instead of total energy expenditure as others have done based on the facts that carbohydrate, fat, and protein intake influence carbohydrate, fat, and protein oxidation. In order to create a simple …

A Pilot Study To Determine The Effectiveness Of Probiotic Use In Elderly Patients With Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea, Jenna L. Peate
A Pilot Study To Determine The Effectiveness Of Probiotic Use In Elderly Patients With Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea, Jenna L. Peate
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Long-term care settings have the majority of their patients on multiple antibiotics, and outbreaks of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and Clostridium difficile are common. Probiotics have been used with these patients to reduce these side effects. Probiotics can re-establish the composition of intestinal microflora, enhance immune response, and clear pathogens from the host which may reduce the symptoms of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Therefore, the goal of this study was to conduct a retrospective study of the effectiveness of using probiotic in elderly patients in a long-term care facility in a Midwestern city who suffered from antibiotic-associated diarrhea. The probiotic, CulturelleTM had been administered …
Food Orbits: A Novel Design Tool For Complex Systems, Stephen Brogan, Seaton Baxter
Food Orbits: A Novel Design Tool For Complex Systems, Stephen Brogan, Seaton Baxter
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Food and our relationship with it is important to our very survival. To understand the different natures of various food systems it is critical to understand some of their general characteristics. We must know the components of the system and how they work together. Currently, there are several conceptual models of food systems available to facilitate the understanding of such: the linear, radial and loop models, none of which seem suitable for a design application. Natural food systems are complex adaptive systems that operate in a closed loop, with all inputs emanating from and all residuals returning to the source. …

The Inclusive Incapability-Culture-Economy Cube: A Design Framework For Complex Barriers, Praima Israsena Na Ayudhya
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Inclusive design is an evolving and complex concept, the definition of which can be extended to address not only age and disability, but also race, income, education, and culture. As most of products are originally designed in developed countries, conventional elder-care products present serious difficulties and exclude users with different cultural customs and lower economic status. There is an urgent need for a design framework, based on an expansive understanding of not only age and disability, but also income, education and culturally related barriers, which will lead to a minimizing of the impact of these differences and thereby extend the …

Emerging Markets - Need For A Taxonomy, Sudhanva V. Char
Emerging Markets - Need For A Taxonomy, Sudhanva V. Char
Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets
The main objective of this brief note is to delineate the relatively new concept of "emerging markets" and outline its ramifications. In order to enable the subject area to sort itself out, there is a pressing need for a taxonomy of emerging markets, demarcating the peripheries that would help specialization in this important area. This paper also attempts to identify significant contributions already made to this new topic. Further research endeavor would enable the stringing together of such a not very homogeneous set of inputs into a coherent emerging market theme that is also epistemologically sound.

Avirulent Uracil Auxotrophs Based On Disruption Of Orotidine-5′-Monophosphate Decarboxylase Elicit Protective Immunity To Toxoplasma Gondii, Barbara A. Fox, David J. Bzik
Dartmouth Scholarship
The orotidine-5'-monophosphate decarboxylase (OMPDC) gene, encoding the final enzyme of the de novo pyrimidine biosynthesis pathway, was deleted using Toxoplasma gondii KU80 knockouts to develop an avirulent nonreverting pyrimidine auxotroph strain. Additionally, to functionally address the role of the pyrimidine salvage pathway, the uridine phosphorylase (UP) salvage activity was knocked out and a double knockout of UP and OMPDC was also constructed. The nonreverting DeltaOMPDC, DeltaUP, and DeltaOMPDC DeltaUP knockout strains were evaluated for pyrimidine auxotrophy, for attenuation of virulence, and for their ability to elicit potent immunity to reinfection. The DeltaUP knockout strain was replication competent and virulent. In …

Developing Brokered Community Transportation For Seniors And People With Disabilities, Jerry D. Marx, Christie Davis, Caitlyn Miftari, Anne Salamone, Wendy Weise
Social Work
Communities are exploring ways to increase transportation coordination to improve access for seniors. One such effort is a brokered transportation system in which one agency serves as the central point of contact for ride information or actually arranging transportation for clients of multiple programs by use of a combination of transportation services. A team of social work faculty and students from the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Social Work Outreach Center, a center that provides service learning opportunities to students, collaborated with a local coalition to investigate the specific transportation needs of the region's senior citizens. A total of 641 …

The Effect Of First Language Dialect Vowel Mergers On Second Language Perception And Production, Christine Elaine Gardner
The Effect Of First Language Dialect Vowel Mergers On Second Language Perception And Production, Christine Elaine Gardner
Theses and Dissertations
Previous second language (L2) acquisition research has assumed that L2 learners from a common first language (L1) have the same problems in an L2, ignoring the potential impact of a speaker's L1 dialect on L2 acquisition. This study examines the effects of L1 dialect on the acquisition of L2 German vowels. In particular, this thesis investigates two questions: 1) Do speakers from L1 dialects with vowel mergers perceive or produce vowel contrasts in the L1 and/or L2 differently than speakers from dialect areas without the same mergers? and 2) Are subjects' patterns of L1 perception or production paralleled in the …
Chronic Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Activation And A High-Fat Diet Have An Additive Effect On Mitochondria In Rat Skeletal Muscle, Natasha Fillmore
Chronic Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Activation And A High-Fat Diet Have An Additive Effect On Mitochondria In Rat Skeletal Muscle, Natasha Fillmore
Theses and Dissertations
Factors that stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis in skeletal muscle include AMPK, calcium, and circulating FFAs. Chronic treatment with either AICAR, a chemical activator of AMPK, or increasing circulating FFAs with a high fat diet increases mitochondria in rat skeletal muscle. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the combination of chronic chemical activation of AMPK and high fat feeding would have an additive effect on skeletal muscle mitochondria levels. We treated Wistar male rats with a high fat diet (HF), AICAR injections (AICAR), or a high fat diet and AICAR injections (HF+AICAR) for six weeks. At the end of …

A Comparison Of Analytical Methods For Quantifying Denatured Whey Proteins And Their Correlation To Solubility, Michelle D. Allen
A Comparison Of Analytical Methods For Quantifying Denatured Whey Proteins And Their Correlation To Solubility, Michelle D. Allen
Master's Theses
Protein structure affects the bioactivity and functionality of whey protein ingredients in food systems. Bioactivity of whey proteins and their derivatives are highly dependent upon primary, secondary and tertiary structure. The degree of denaturation of whey proteins is an important factor for determining how whey protein ingredients will perform in a food system. Several analytical methods have been developed to quantify protein denaturation of whey proteins. The goal of this project was to use a variety of analytical methods to quantify whey protein denaturation and to evaluate the correlation of denaturation to the functionality of whey protein powders.
The objective …

Purpose of review
Mucositis has long been viewed as an unavoidable consequence of high-dose chemotherapy and/or radiation. Management has been directed to supportive care including oral pain control, nutritional support, infection treatment and control of diarrhea. While these interventions have been valuable for clinical management, they have not been collectively directed to molecularly targeted prevention and treatment. This review addresses recent advances regarding mucosal injury in cancer patients, with emphasis on symptom clusters, genetically-based tissue susceptibility and risk prediction, imaging technology, and computational biology.
Recent findings
Modeling of symptom clusters in cancer patients continues to mature. Although integration of mucositis …
