Coverage Of Obesity Treatment: A State-By-State Analysis Of Medicaid And State Insurance Laws, Jennifer S. Lee, Jennifer L.O. Sheer, Nancy Lopez, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Objectives. We determined whether state Medicaid programs cover recommended treatments for adult and pediatric obesity and to what extent states regulate the treatment and coverage of obesity by private insurers.

Methods. We conducted a state-by-state document review of Medicaid manuals and private insurance laws and regulations.

Results. Eight state Medicaid programs appear to cover all recommended obesity treatment modalities for adults. Only 10 states appear to reimburse for obesity-related treatment in children. In the small-group insurance market, 35 states expressly allow obesity to be used for rate adjustments, while 10 states do so in the individual market. Two states expressly …

Dust Storms Over The Arabian Gulf: An Optimistic Vision Toward Climate Change Consequences, Waleed Hamza, Mohamed Rizk, Huda Al-Hassini, Jan Stuut, Dirk De-Beer

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Dust storms frequencies and strengths have been monitored during 2009 at different locations along the coastal areas of the United Arab Emirates as a representative site of the Arabian Gulf marine environment. The results have been compared with the previous five years data set. Moreover mineralogical components of the collected dust samples during the study period have been analyzed using both XRD and XRF techniques. The results of comparison have allowed to evaluate changes occurred in dust storms characteristics over the Arabian Gulf and to consider it as a sensitive signal of climate changes over the region. It has been …

Modelling Irrigation Demand From Two Grasslands In Switzerland Under Contrasting Climatic Conditions And Soil Properties, P. C. Smith, P. Calanca, J. Fuhrer Jul 2010

Modelling Irrigation Demand From Two Grasslands In Switzerland Under Contrasting Climatic Conditions And Soil Properties, P. C. Smith, P. Calanca, J. Fuhrer

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We examine irrigation demand in Switzerland under current climatic conditionson the basis of simulations with a process-based grassland model. Two sites are considered:Oensingen, on the Swiss Plateau, benefits from a humid climate and is rarely affected bydrought; Sion, located in the Rhone Valley, is highly water-limited, with critical soilmoisture conditions every year. Water requirements to sustain productivity therefore varysubstantially between the sites and in time, with needs up to 800 mm per year at Sion, andaverage needs of the order of 300 mm at Oensingen if a shallow soil is assumed. We showthat simple relations can be found between water …

Exploring The Choice Of Decision Making Method In An Agent Based Model Of Land Use Change, A. R. Cabrera, P. J. Deadman, E. S. Brondizio, M. Pinedo-Vasquez

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In agent-based models of land use/cover change (ABM/LUCC), small changes in micro-level decision-making methods used by agents may significantly affect macro-level outcomes. Yet, the implications of choosing a specific decision making model are seldom explored in ABM/LUCC studies. This paper discusses an ABM/LUCC modelling study of smallholder farming households in the Amazonian varzea in Maraj´o Island, Brazil. These agents represent the 21 households within the community of Paricatuba. Farmers in this community cultivate acai as a primary source of income, in addition to other farming and economic activities such as offsite employment. In the model, agents make annual decisions to …

Modelling Needs Assessment For Social Adaptation To Climate Change In Siberia, G. A. Alexandrov, G. Inoue, T. Matsunaga

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Despite the common expectation that climate change may make Siberia a warm heaven, this would not be good for local people. Surprisingly the people of Siberia do rely on the winter cold. Warming may be a serious challenge here. Climate change threatens Siberian forests, lakes and permafrost. In the region where landscapes are unstable this implies the risks of losing the traditional means of subsistence, at least for a while. Social adaptation to climate change is becoming an urgent issue, as the first signs of warming are becoming noticeable to local people. This article reports an attempt to explore the …

Examining The Relationship Between Criticism And Muscle Dysmorphia Symptomotology In Collegiate Men, Lauren M. Menees Jul 2010

Examining The Relationship Between Criticism And Muscle Dysmorphia Symptomotology In Collegiate Men, Lauren M. Menees

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The goal of the current study was to examine the relationship between critical comments that men can recall others making about their bodies and their current level of Muscle Dysmorphia (MD) symptomotology. Participants (N = 118) were recruited via study board from a mid-Western university with a population of 20,674 students. The hypothesis of the current study was that men who can recall critical comments about their bodies will report more MD symptomotology than those who remembered no such comments. In addition, it was expected that out of those who recall critical comments, the more severe or threatening they remember …

Prolongation Of Carrageenan-Induced Inflammation In Human Colonic Epithelial Cells By Activation Of An Nfκb-Bcl10 Loop, Alip Borthakur, Sumit Bhattacharyya, Arivarasu N. Anbazhagan, Anoop Kumar, Pradeep K. Dudeja, Joanne K. Tobacman Jul 2010

Prolongation Of Carrageenan-Induced Inflammation In Human Colonic Epithelial Cells By Activation Of An Nfκb-Bcl10 Loop, Alip Borthakur, Sumit Bhattacharyya, Arivarasu N. Anbazhagan, Anoop Kumar, Pradeep K. Dudeja, Joanne K. Tobacman

Clinical & Translational Sciences

Carrageenan, a sulfated polysaccharide that is widely used as a food additive, induces inflammatory responses in animal models and human cells. The carrageenan-induced inflammatory cascades involve tolllike receptor (TLR)4- and B-cell leukemia/lymphoma (BCL)10-dependent activation of NF-κB, leading to increased IL-8 production. Translocations involving BCL10 in the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas are associated with constitutive activation of NF-κB. This report presents a mechanism by which carrageenan exposure leads to prolonged activation of both BCL10 and NF-κB in human colonic epithelial cells. Study findings demonstrate that nuclear RelA and RelB bind to an NF-κB binding motif in the BCL10 promoter in …

Social Shopping Using Food Spimes, Timothy Maciag, Daryl H. Hepting, Joann Jaffe, Katherine Arbuthnott, Darryl Dormuth Jul 2010

Social Shopping Using Food Spimes, Timothy Maciag, Daryl H. Hepting, Joann Jaffe, Katherine Arbuthnott, Darryl Dormuth

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Bruce Sterling defines spimes, in part, as extensively rich streams of data and informationabout things. From a theoretical viewpoint, the concept of spimes is indeed interesting, with seemingly endless possibilities for enriching our knowledge about the things all around us.In terms of our everyday decision-making activities, spimes could have significant influence onour behaviours, empowering us to make more informed choices. No where is this more true thanin topics relating to sustainability, especially in how sustainability relates to the selection of thefood that we eat. With vast amounts of information available, the issue of selecting good food canbe difficult and more adequate …

Environmental Flow Requirements (Efrs) Related To Preference Of Phytoplankton In The Yellow River Estuary (Yre) Based On An Ecohydrodynamic Model, R. Zhao, Z. F. Yang, T. Sun

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The response of ecological processes to hydrological processes is a critical issue in the assessment of environmental flow requirements in estuaries. Considering its representative function of the primary productivity in estuaries, the phytoplankton community was selected as the bioindicator to indicate the variation of ecosystems influenced by hydrological processes in estuaries. Based on the regression analysis, a response relation model was established for describing the relationship between characteristics of phytoplankton communities (chlorophyll a, Fucoxanthin, chlorophyll b, and pyridinin) and indicating factors including salinity, COD, ammonia nitrogen, and dissolved oxygen. The biomass objective of high nutritional level organisms, the biomass of …

Soil Total Organic Carbon, Δ13c Values And Their Responses To The Soil Core Transferring Experiment From High- To Low-Elevation Forest Along Natural Altitudinal Transect Of Old Temperate Volcanic Forest Soils, Zhang Xin-Yu, Meng Xian-Jing, Fan Jin-Juan, Gao Lu-Peng, Sun Xiao-Min Jul 2010

Soil Total Organic Carbon, Δ13c Values And Their Responses To The Soil Core Transferring Experiment From High- To Low-Elevation Forest Along Natural Altitudinal Transect Of Old Temperate Volcanic Forest Soils, Zhang Xin-Yu, Meng Xian-Jing, Fan Jin-Juan, Gao Lu-Peng, Sun Xiao-Min

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In this study, the responses of soil organic carbon and δ13C values to soil warming were conducted by relocating intact soil cores from high- to low-elevation forests for one year along a natural altitudinal transect in the northern slope of Changbai Mountain. As expected, the soil-core relocation caused significant increase in soil temperature but made no significant effect on soil moisture. The results showed that after one year incubation, soil relocation significantly decreased TOC contents, and δ13C decreased. Pearson correlation analysis demonstrates that TOC content was negatively related to soil temperature but positively related to soil moisture. After one-year simulated …

The US Fish and Wildlife Service has an interest in understanding how sandhill and whooping cranes (Grus canadensis and G. americana, respectively) use habitats in the landscape surrounding Horicon National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin, USA. The refuge and adjacent state wildlife management areas contain the largest cattail marsh in the lower 48 states, providing important habitat for sandhill and whooping cranes, especially for roosting and staging for migration. Important feeding habitats are found in adjacent agricultural fields, small wetlands, and grasslands. It is in these feeding habitats that commercial wind turbines have been erected. We are studying crane movements in …
