A Pilot Study Of Module Interconnectedness, Prasanth Vanguru Jan 2010

A Pilot Study Of Module Interconnectedness, Prasanth Vanguru

Statistics

Complexity plays an important role in understanding and working with a program, and has been measured in many different ways for software applications. The use of statistical analysis is one of the ways to predict the pattern of complexity among the modules present in a software application. A random sample of twelve software applications was selected for this study to examine complexity. A single pair of complexity measures was evaluated. This pair of complexity measures was the indegrees and out-degrees for each module of an application. The next step was to try to fit suitable statistical distributions to the in-degrees …

I'M Seeing Red!Literally: The Effect Of Metaphoric Representation On Perception, Adam Kent Fetterman Jan 2010

I'M Seeing Red!Literally: The Effect Of Metaphoric Representation On Perception, Adam Kent Fetterman

Psychology

Metaphor is often used to represent abstract concepts using concrete domains (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980). One set of metaphors that has long been of interest, but seldom studied, is the set of those linking color and emotion. Specifically, red and anger are often linked in everyday language and popular media. There is a recent body of work on metaphoric representation processes, yet none of it has focused on color perception. The present studies investigate the effects of priming anger-related concepts and experiences on the visual perception of color. It was predicted that participants would perceive degraded color screens as red …

The Effects Of Cultural Dispositions On Behavior In Social Dilemmas: Examining The Impact Of Expectations On Cooperation And Competition, Jared Lee Ladbury Jan 2010

The Effects Of Cultural Dispositions On Behavior In Social Dilemmas: Examining The Impact Of Expectations On Cooperation And Competition, Jared Lee Ladbury

Psychology

Many groups require cooperation in order to efficiently complete tasks in a manner that benefits all group members. The antecedents of cooperative and competitive behavior have been well studied using a particular class of problems called social dilemmas. Cultural variables, such as collectivism, are often thought to influence cooperative behavior in groups, but experimental evidence has seen mixed results. The current study attempts to add to our understanding of the effects of cultural variables on cooperative and competitive behavior in groups by advancing two major ideas: (1) that the Input-Process-Output (I-PO) framework-a theoretical framework of group functioning which proposes that …

La Crisis De La Vida Media: Elaboracion E Implementacion Ce Un Seminario Para La Iglesia Adventista Hispana De Ontario, California, Daniel Rumrrill Alvarez

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The literature related with the family clearly identifies the problem of the midlife crisis. The expert on family relationships and midlife crisis, Jim Conway, says: “Our studies, along with those of other researchers, show that al least 75% of people between ages thirty five to fifty five will go through a moderate to severe crisis.” 1 My experience as Pastor at the Ontario Hispanic Church, California, has shown me that the members of the congregation are not the exception, and I had the opportunity to advice and counsel persons that suffer emotional crisis during this stage of their lives.

Helping Parents In The Toronto Sda Churches Understand And Deal With The Challenges Of Adolescents And Work Towards A More Harmonious Relationship, Nephtaly Dorzilme Jan 2010

Helping Parents In The Toronto Sda Churches Understand And Deal With The Challenges Of Adolescents And Work Towards A More Harmonious Relationship, Nephtaly Dorzilme

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Parenting is a process which requests a great deal of flexibility and understanding. Both parents and child are engaged in the human developmental process; in most cases parents reach the midlife crisis more or less at the same time when the child reaches the adolescence phase. In most cases neither the parents nor the adolescent understand what is really happening in their lives. They begin to dislike each other and a conflictual atmosphere exists in the home. This lack of understanding brings about the breakdown in the relation parent adolescent. On the other hand parents usually have certain goals …

Transforming The Devonshire Seventh-Day Adventist Church Into A Missional Community Through The Biblical Alignment Of The Church’S Spirituality, Passion And Ministries, Errol N. Mclean Jan 2010

Transforming The Devonshire Seventh-Day Adventist Church Into A Missional Community Through The Biblical Alignment Of The Church’S Spirituality, Passion And Ministries, Errol N. Mclean

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Churches experiencing plateau or even decline often arrive at that stage in their life cycle because they are no longer fulfilling the great commission. They have lost their spiritual vitality, vision, and a purpose for mission. The challenge is renewing in this context a vision for growth and a commitment to ministry to the lost. This project details how this challenge was responded to at the Devonshire Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Method. Identifying that the church was in the plateau stage of its life cycle was fundamental to approaching the problem. A theological foundation was established as a first step …

For each of these capitals; postal and email correspondences, phone calls, and internet searches were used to collect government surveys, statistics, and documentary and photographic data. These data were presented in tables and analyzed using a descriptive method. The analyses revealed a positive effect of ecotourism on all the capitals and suggested …

Seventh-Day Adventist Leadership Recruitment And Training Program For Basarwa In Botswana, Africa, Boitirelo Kabo Jan 2010

Seventh-Day Adventist Leadership Recruitment And Training Program For Basarwa In Botswana, Africa, Boitirelo Kabo

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Seventh- day Adventist church in Botswana, although being among the fastest growing churches in the country, has not been able to reach the Basarwa tribe since 1921. This is in spite of the church’s best effort. Among the contributing factors is the apparent failure by the church to develop a culturally relevant approach that considers the Basarwa unique lifestyle and a lack of Basarwa church leaders.

Methodology

Surveys were administered among the Basarwa in four districts to establish their awareness of the church and factors that hinder them from joining the church. Training on church leadership for the …

The Transformational Effects Of Forgiveness In The Lives Of Members Of The Kingsboro Temple Congregation, Joseph E. Ainsworth

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Forgiveness is a crucial need within the congregation, and the lack of a greater practice of forgiveness is severely impacting the emotional, relational, and spiritual wellbeing of members. This present study investigated causes of hurt within the congregation, and designed a process to assist members in achieving forgiveness to empower them to live a forgiven life.

Method

The Pearson Correlations of Values measured 17 variables of spirituality and forgiveness against variables of avoidance, revenge, distancing, and feeling close. The ] 7 variables were reviewed and validated by Dr. Joan Atwood as a check and balance to personal biases. Forty-eight …

Performance Evaluation Of Pastors In East Zimbabwe Conference, Douglas Mutanga Jan 2010

Performance Evaluation Of Pastors In East Zimbabwe Conference, Douglas Mutanga

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

There has been no consistent and effective way of evaluating the performance of pastors in the East Zimbabwe Conference. In most cases the evaluating is only done for the purpose of identifying ordination candidates and is based only on quantifiable goals that include baptisms, tithe returns, and submission of reports. Due to the rapid growth of the church in terms of personnel, number of churches and membership, and the vast geographical territory, the need for an evaluation instrument is critical.

Method

The study was descriptive and designed around research questions that helped determine the job description of the pastor. …

A Molecular Dynamics Study Of Mechanical Properties Of Carbon Nanotube Polymer Composites And Graphene Nanoplatelet Polymer Composites, Suchitra Reddy Yerramaddu Jan 2010

A Molecular Dynamics Study Of Mechanical Properties Of Carbon Nanotube Polymer Composites And Graphene Nanoplatelet Polymer Composites, Suchitra Reddy Yerramaddu

Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics

Carbon nanotubes have been the main focus in science and engineering fields lately for their extraordinary properties. But carbon nanotube fabrication process is very expensive, particularly for reinforcements and structural composite applications. Instead of working towards developing lower cost nanotubes, an alternate solution to resolve the problem is to formulate a cost effective reinforcement referred to as graphene nanoplatelets. These nanoplatelets have excellent mechanical as well as electronic properties opening up for several applications in various fields. Their structure with carboncarbon bonds make them stronger and stiffer. Single nanotubes can be used as reinforcements in one direction, while the graphite …

Development Of An Action Plan To Transform The Erwin Hills Seventh-Day Adventist Church Into A Family-Friendly Church For The Purpose Of Winning Families With Youth And Children, Eli Rojas Jan 2010

Development Of An Action Plan To Transform The Erwin Hills Seventh-Day Adventist Church Into A Family-Friendly Church For The Purpose Of Winning Families With Youth And Children, Eli Rojas

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

Through a period of a few years the Erwin Hills Seventh-day Adventist Church went from a thriving congregation with members of all ages to a small group of faithful members who desired to see the return of the days when their church was thriving. As the new pastor took office a desire to change came upon the leadership, one that led them to think of ways to attract and retain families to their ranks. There was a lack in ministry that was inclusive of all the members of a household and thus unattractive to new members with young adults …

The Historical Reflection Of The Integration Of The Minority Groups Within The Adventist Church In Zimbabwe Between 1985 And 1994, Jonathan Tapera Nzuma Jan 2010

The Historical Reflection Of The Integration Of The Minority Groups Within The Adventist Church In Zimbabwe Between 1985 And 1994, Jonathan Tapera Nzuma

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The integration of minority groups into the mainstream of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Zimbabwe has been resisted. In the power struggle that ensued, rooted in complex issues of multi-ethnicity and multiculturalism, the church has gone through a schism. Little reflective thought has been given to how this schism may have been avoided and how to address similar issues in the future, as well as seeking to embrace wounded members back into the larger Adventist Church.

The Method

A theological foundation was laid for this project by examining the biblical doctrine of unity in diversity as portrayed in both …

The Feminist Cure: Feminist Identity As A Shield From Hyper-Sexualized L'Vledia Induced Self-Objectification In College Women, Natalie Smith Carlson Jan 2010

The Feminist Cure: Feminist Identity As A Shield From Hyper-Sexualized L'Vledia Induced Self-Objectification In College Women, Natalie Smith Carlson

English

This paper explores the impact of hyper-sexualized media on college women in terms of inducing self-objectification and/or inhibiting feminist identity. The survey and resulting analysis showed participants' feminist orientation ostensibly affected their inclination to self-objectify after watching and responding to a slideshow of common images of women in our culture. By comparing the reactions of women \Vith high feminist orientation and low feminist orientation, suggestions were clear about connections between an identification with feminism and a propensity to value the self and other women for characteristics beyond those of appearance and sexuality.

Museum: The Beauty Of Lean, Timothy M. Stone

Architecture Theses

Museums are universal institutions dedicated to the preservation of culture: This one will be located in the vicinity of downtown Fargo, North Dakota, with a approximate square footage of 38,000. Architectural design, through the most efficient and minimal use of materials, can be profound. An architecture that is sensitive to natural resources and habitats should be the determinate vehicle in the built environment. As architects, we must forever continue considering the expression of enriched architectural solutions to societal problems and reduce creating them.

Why The Eitc Doesn’T Make Work Pay, Anne L. Alstott Jan 2010

Why The Eitc Doesn’T Make Work Pay, Anne L. Alstott

Law and Contemporary Problems

Alstott offers an evaluation of the significance of the credit and, in a historical spirit, hark back to an earlier, critical perspective on the earned income tax credit (EITC)--a perspective rarely heard in recent years. She argues that these concerns remain apt, despite the expansion of the EITC and oft-repeated praise for its importance as an antipoverty program. Moreover, she highlights three features of U.S. law that constrain the effectiveness of the EITC in improving the wellbeing of low-income workers and their children: labor and employment laws that structure markets that produce low wages and harsh working conditions, laws that …

Developing Deep Understanding And Literacy While Addressing A Gender-Based Literacy Gap, Jianwei Zhang, Yanqing Sun, Marlene Scardamalia Jan 2010

Developing Deep Understanding And Literacy While Addressing A Gender-Based Literacy Gap, Jianwei Zhang, Yanqing Sun, Marlene Scardamalia

Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship

Online discourse from a class of 22 students (11 boys and 11 girls) was analysed to assess advances in conceptual understanding and literacy. The students worked over a two-‐year period (Grades 3-‐4), during which they contributed notes to an online Knowledge Building environment—Knowledge Forum®. Contributions revealed that both boys and girls produced a substantial amount of text and graphics, and that their written texts incorporated an increasing proportion of less-‐frequent, advanced words, including academic vocabulary and domain-‐specific words from grade levels higher than their own. Brief accounts of classroom discourse indicate how deep understanding and vocabulary growth mutually support each …
