Entertainment Media's Satirical Effects On Teenage And Adult Attitudes Of Political News Organizations., Joseph Lawrence Chianak:As Jan 2010

Entertainment Media's Satirical Effects On Teenage And Adult Attitudes Of Political News Organizations., Joseph Lawrence Chianak:As

Communication

This study explored the effect of satire in persuasion by comparing attitude changes between adults and teenagers. It revealed that satire was effective in changing attitudes and that satire had a greater effect on changing teenage attitudes than adult attitudes. In this study, participants rated the trustworthiness and competency of political news organizations and then watched comedic segments from entertainment media that satirized the political news organizations. After the satirical segments, participants re-evaluated the trustworthiness and competency of political news organizations. The satire proved to be effective in negatively changing the perception of trustworthiness and competency among political news organizations, …

Corporate Communication On Facebook: A Multi-Method Approach To Corporate Use And Stakeholder Perceptions Of Social Media, Kathryn Marie Hedberg Jan 2010

Corporate Communication On Facebook: A Multi-Method Approach To Corporate Use And Stakeholder Perceptions Of Social Media, Kathryn Marie Hedberg

Communication

This study looked at how corporations are currently using Facebook and what stakeholders' perceptions are of current corporate Facebook usage. A content analysis of nine corporate profile pages was conducted. Pages were coded for the presence or absence of relational development strategies under the categories of information dissemination, disclosure and involvement. A survey was also distributed to the fans of the nine corporate profiles in order to gain the fan perspective. Results showed that while corporations include disclosure and information dissemination strategies, they rarely use involvement strategies. This lack of interactivity is inconsistent with the fan perspective of corporate profiles, …

The Role Of Cyber And Face-To-Face Verbal Bullying On Adolescent Victims, Laura Catherine Farrell Jan 2010

The Role Of Cyber And Face-To-Face Verbal Bullying On Adolescent Victims, Laura Catherine Farrell

Communication

The purpose of this study was to examine adolescent verbal bullying across communication media (e.g., face-to-face [F2F], cyber, both). Media Richness Theory (MRT; Daft & Lengel, 1984; 1986) and hyperpersonal communication (Walther, 1996) are the guiding theories in this study. Results suggested three of the four emotional outcomes [happiness, self-esteem, and peer satisfaction] were not significantly different across verbal bullying media, while the fourth emotional outcome [relational victimization] was significantly different. Results also suggested differences in frequency of bullying communication types between bullying media. There was a significant difference in the frequency of bullying type and grade level; however, there …

Chevron's Power Of Human Energy: A Case For Corporate Social Responsibility As Identification Inducement, Michelle Marie Roers Jan 2010

Chevron's Power Of Human Energy: A Case For Corporate Social Responsibility As Identification Inducement, Michelle Marie Roers

Communication

With corporate social responsibility (CSR) emerging as an inescapable business priority around the world, organizations are developing elaborate CSR campaigns to highlight their good deeds and influence important stakeholders. Despite its potentially powerful persuasive influence, however, we know surprisingly little about the actual messaging used in contemporary CSR campaigns. Accordingly, this study investigates a major multinational-and controversial-company's CSR campaign to examine CSR messages' propensity for inducing positive organizational identification. A case study applying Cheney's (1983b) organizational identification inducements reveals that Chevron's Power of Human Energy CSR campaign extensively and strategically uses CSR messaging to induce identification. This study thus suggests …

Development Tools For Content Creation In Virtual Environments, Guy Eric Hokanson

Computer Science

lmmersive Virtual Environments (IVEs) for education are designed and implemented to enable students to learn complicated concepts in an exploratory and inquiry based manner. The environments are constructed so that multiple users can interact with the educational simulation and learn to think like a scientist. Developing these IVEs requires a multi-disciplinary development team that consists of more than just software engineers. It requires content experts to provide the information needed to create the best and most interactive lessons possible. While some content experts have a strong interest in technology and are capable of working with the development environment directly, many …

Recruiting Through Identification: Identification Strategies And Tactics Used In External Higher Education Strategic Communication, Dana Raye Anderson Jan 2010

Recruiting Through Identification: Identification Strategies And Tactics Used In External Higher Education Strategic Communication, Dana Raye Anderson

Computer Science

This exploratory study examines higher education strategic communication for identification inducement strategies and tactics using Cheney's (1983) typology as a guiding framework. The study also explores the differences in identification inducement strategies and tactics used between traditional public universities and for-profit online educators. The results of a deductive textual analysis indicate that identification inducement strategies are used in higher education strategic communication designed to recruit students, an external audience with a reverse paid relationship with the organization. A new strategy and two tactics are added to Cheney's typology to fully account for the identification appeals identified.

We Call Ourselves By Many Names: Storytelling And Inter-Minority Coalition-Building, Celina Su Jan 2010

We Call Ourselves By Many Names: Storytelling And Inter-Minority Coalition-Building, Celina Su

Publications and Research

Scholars debate whether new immigrants will join minority native-born groups, especially African-Americans, in battling racial disparities, income inequalities, and discrimination in the United States. Although scholars have investigated inter-minority coalition-building in the context of electoral politics, a substantial share of newer immigrant social and political action has not been formalized. Social change organizations play an integral role in less formalized politics. The article draws upon ethnographic data on two case study organizations to investigate how they built coalitions between immigrants and non-immigrants. It pinpoints the ways in which they engaged in storytelling to emphasize multiple identity – namely, how any …

Lntraspecific Variation In Pathogenic Cryptosporidium Parvum, Grant Richard Herges Jan 2010

Lntraspecific Variation In Pathogenic Cryptosporidium Parvum, Grant Richard Herges

Microbiological Sciences

Cryptosporidium causes cryptosporidiosis, an infectious diarrheal disease, which can become chronic and life-threatening in immunocompromised individuals. Cryptosporidium parvum and C. hominis are the primary causes of human cryptosporidiosis. Of these species, C. hominis only infects humans while C. parvum additionally infects ruminants, in particular neonatal calves. Therefore, understanding the transmission dynamics of C. parvum, particularly the specific contribution of zoonotic and anthroponotic transmission, is critical to the control of this pathogen. Cryptosporidium parvum genotypes have been identified which appear to be restricted to a single host, which suggests that this may be a heterogeneous species, with varying infection and transmission …

Emerging Public International Banking Law? Lessons From The Law Of The Sea Experience, Barbara C. Matthews Jan 2010

Emerging Public International Banking Law? Lessons From The Law Of The Sea Experience, Barbara C. Matthews

Chicago Journal of International Law

During the twentieth century, the law of the sea had been criticized as having a democratic deficit because the customary standards articulated in treaty-based codifications deprived modern and newer nation-states from participating in the standard-setting process.4 Some might suggest that therefore the law of the sea does not provide the best example for modern global normative processes. This Article does not opine on the merits of the democratic deficit debate regarding the law of the sea. This Article instead asserts that the modern global normative process in the financial sector area composed of the G20 and its observers (the international …

Clearing Credit Default Swaps: A Case Study In Global Legal Convergence, Anupam Chander, Randall Costa Jan 2010

Clearing Credit Default Swaps: A Case Study In Global Legal Convergence, Anupam Chander, Randall Costa

Chicago Journal of International Law

In the wake of the global financial crisis, American and European regulators quickly converged on a reform intended to help stave off similar crises in the future: central counterparty clearinghouses for credit default swaps. On both sides of the Atlantic, regulators identified credit default swaps (CDS) as a central factor in the crisis that seized Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, American International Group (AIG), and ultimately the world. Regulators quickly agreed that improving the conditions under which CDS are traded, specifically, the addition of a central counterparty in clearing, would prove a key reform to the global financial architecture. Introducing a …

Concerning The Masked In Architecture, Fernando Bales Jan 2010

Concerning The Masked In Architecture, Fernando Bales

Architecture Theses

The thesis responds to the statement that queries the role of the designer and asks whether or not one can "unmask" that which has been covered up by our tendencies in the way we live. The typology being a master-builder university will help to resolve this issue. The unifying idea here is that through a “slowing down” in the approach to design, be it through poetic interpretation of an “artefact” or narrative one can then root a design in a tangible meaningful process. In justification: it is essential that we (as designers) slow things down in order to stop the …

Adaptive Architecture: Design For A Declining Global Population, Brian Sommerfeld Jan 2010

Adaptive Architecture: Design For A Declining Global Population, Brian Sommerfeld

Architecture Theses

In the face of a declining human population, our ability to plan for and adapt to future circumstances will be essential if we, as a global community, are to not only preserve our built environment, but also ensure its continued growth in a responsible manner. We cannot afford to ignore or be indifferent to the issue of population decline. And while it will require the cooperation and coordination of a large number of groups to develop a comprehensive plan, we as architects and members of the design community have a responsibility to develop our own set of criteria that will …

Mindfulness, Emotions, And Mental Models: Theory That Leads To More Effective Dispute Resolution, Peter Reilly Jan 2010

Mindfulness, Emotions, And Mental Models: Theory That Leads To More Effective Dispute Resolution, Peter Reilly

Faculty Scholarship

At the core of nearly all great negotiators, mediators, lawyers, and leaders is a person who has learned to connect with other people, that is, to build relationships of trust, cooperation, and collaboration. This Article argues that when people learn a sense of "self" and "other" through both theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding of mindfulness and human emotion, connections with others are more likely to be made, and important relationships are more likely to be built.

My goal, then, is to begin thinking about how one might bring mindfulness and emotions from the “mind level” to what human relations …

Space Age Love Song: The Mix Tape In A Digital Universe, Megan M. Carpenter Jan 2010

Space Age Love Song: The Mix Tape In A Digital Universe, Megan M. Carpenter

Faculty Scholarship

Mix tapes are the classic, iconic form of music sharing. Mix tape creators of the past believed they were making a piece of art larger than the sum of its parts. And even in the face of technological development so rapid and far-reaching as to remove the literal "tape" from "mix tape," there are nonetheless modem incarnations that crop up on a regular basis, from mix CDs to mix-sharing websites. The technology is different, but the song remains the same.

The Effects Of Fungal Pigments On Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectral Peak Formation, Amanda Dawn Buskirk Jan 2010

The Effects Of Fungal Pigments On Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectral Peak Formation, Amanda Dawn Buskirk

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fungi are ubiquitous microorganisms that commonly cause diseases with high mortality rates in immunocompromised hosts. In order to successfully treat the infection and subsequently decrease mortality rates, it is necessary to rapidly identify the causal organism(s) and promptly begin the proper treatment. Common identification methods, such as viable culture characterization, are often time consuming or not species-specific, as is the case with many molecular or immunodiagnostic assays. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has been used to discriminate between many clinically relevant microorganisms. Recently, MALDI-TOF MS has been used to discriminate between monilaceous fungal species, however, darkly pigmented …

Selenium Removal By Nano-Magnetite Impregnated Diatomaceous Earth, Isabel Cardona

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to remove selenium from aqueous solution using nano-magnetite impregnated diatomaceous earth (DE) as an adsorbent. The adsorbent was prepared at the laboratory with a ratio of magnetite/DE of 10%. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of pH, temperature, adsorbent concentration, selenium speciation, contact time and presence of competing anions on selenium removal efficiency in conjunction with studies on adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and adsorptive thermodynamics. Rapid adsorption occurred within 30 min and selenium uptake decreased with increase in temperature. Low pH values (i.e. 2--4) favored selenium adsorption as expected for anion adsorption …

State Spatial Practices And Uneven Development: Flexible Rescaling In Appalachia, Jacquelyn Jordon Core Jan 2010

State Spatial Practices And Uneven Development: Flexible Rescaling In Appalachia, Jacquelyn Jordon Core

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Geographic theories regarding uneven development, including Neil Smith's convergence of Marxist theory and spatial development and David Harvey's development of scalar fix and later conceptual development of the process of capital accumulation, historically have focused primarily on how and why uneven development occurs. Research to date has provided only a cursory examination of what role, if any, the state plays in impacting uneven development, has not endeavored to characterize the state as an active, purposeful spatial player in the process of uneven development, and has not conceptualized how the state impacts uneven development through spatial practices, if the state does …

Peanut butter samples were exposed to e-beam doses of 0 (control), 3.2, 7.0, or 27.7 kGy, confirmed by film dosimetry. Doses correlated with a 5- and 12-log reduction of Salmonella respectively; with 27.7 kGy representing an extreme dose. Samples were examined over a 15-day period at 22°C. Color analysis (L, a*, b*), spreadability, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances test (TBARS) for lipid oxidation …

Comprehensive Tobacco Control Policy Regimes And Population Health: Assessing Causal Loops, Stephanie J. Frisbee Jan 2010

Comprehensive Tobacco Control Policy Regimes And Population Health: Assessing Causal Loops, Stephanie J. Frisbee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Tobacco products remain among the most controversial consumer products of all time: cigarettes are the only legal product that, when used as intended, are lethal. The global and individual burden attributable to the primary use of tobacco, or secondary or tertiary exposure to cigarette smoke, whether measured by morbidity, mortality, or economic costs, is substantial. With the combined efforts of scientific research, public health and policy advocates, the image and use of tobacco products has undergone profound change. However, while much has been achieved regarding the attitudinal, behavioral, and policy changes needed to diminish the individual, social, and economic costs …
