Mindfulness, Emotions, And Mental Models: Theory That Leads To More Effective Dispute Resolution, Peter Reilly Jan 2010

Mindfulness, Emotions, And Mental Models: Theory That Leads To More Effective Dispute Resolution, Peter Reilly

Faculty Scholarship

At the core of nearly all great negotiators, mediators, lawyers, and leaders is a person who has learned to connect with other people, that is, to build relationships of trust, cooperation, and collaboration. This Article argues that when people learn a sense of "self" and "other" through both theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding of mindfulness and human emotion, connections with others are more likely to be made, and important relationships are more likely to be built.

My goal, then, is to begin thinking about how one might bring mindfulness and emotions from the “mind level” to what human relations …

Space Age Love Song: The Mix Tape In A Digital Universe, Megan M. Carpenter Jan 2010

Space Age Love Song: The Mix Tape In A Digital Universe, Megan M. Carpenter

Faculty Scholarship

Mix tapes are the classic, iconic form of music sharing. Mix tape creators of the past believed they were making a piece of art larger than the sum of its parts. And even in the face of technological development so rapid and far-reaching as to remove the literal "tape" from "mix tape," there are nonetheless modem incarnations that crop up on a regular basis, from mix CDs to mix-sharing websites. The technology is different, but the song remains the same.

The Effects Of Fungal Pigments On Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectral Peak Formation, Amanda Dawn Buskirk Jan 2010

The Effects Of Fungal Pigments On Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectral Peak Formation, Amanda Dawn Buskirk

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fungi are ubiquitous microorganisms that commonly cause diseases with high mortality rates in immunocompromised hosts. In order to successfully treat the infection and subsequently decrease mortality rates, it is necessary to rapidly identify the causal organism(s) and promptly begin the proper treatment. Common identification methods, such as viable culture characterization, are often time consuming or not species-specific, as is the case with many molecular or immunodiagnostic assays. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has been used to discriminate between many clinically relevant microorganisms. Recently, MALDI-TOF MS has been used to discriminate between monilaceous fungal species, however, darkly pigmented …

Preliminary Analysis Of The Environmental Effects On Rna Degradation: Modeling A Realistic Crime Scene, Beatriz A. Vianna

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In forensic science, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) became an indispensable tool given the limited amount of biological samples usually encountered at crime scenes. DNA analysis is used to identify the source of biological samples typically obtained from a single hair, or droplet of blood. Determining the source of the biological evidence can provide a spatial link, thereby including or excluding a suspect at a crime scene or other locations related to a crime investigation. In spite of the great efficiency in human identification, DNA analysis cannot provide any information regarding time of deposition of the sample. The ability to establish …

Today For Tomorrow, Christopher Anderson

Architecture Theses

Educating today’s children about the facts of sustainable awareness is essential to reach the maximum potential in order to provide for both the environment and future populations. In today’s world, children seem to hold a hierarchy in which technological advancements in computers and video games reign dominantly over recreation and the outdoor natural environment. The problem is, that as we move through this digital revolution, children are becoming more and more disconnected from the offerings that our planet provides. In order for our existence to flourish, it is important for today’s youth to become more environmentally aware of their actions. …

Lord Of The Living Souls: Dominion And The Spiritual Lives Of Animals In Milton's Paradise Lost, Kurt William Russow Jan 2010

Lord Of The Living Souls: Dominion And The Spiritual Lives Of Animals In Milton's Paradise Lost, Kurt William Russow

English

This paper examines Milton's views of the spiritual status of animals as presented in Paradise lost. It discusses how Milton enters into discussion with the discourses of 111 theology, philosophy, and both antique and modern science to construct his own nuanced view on the dominion humankind was theologically mandated to have over animals. Milton promotes a complex animal ethic based simultaneously on both hierarchy and kinship. Ultimately this ethic is used not only to celebrate animals, but also to celebrate a stewardship-oriented notion of a divinely ordained hierarchy.
