Bayley's Claims About "Alice", Jeremiah Farrell
Bayley's Claims About "Alice", Jeremiah Farrell
Word Ways
Melanie Bayley, a doctoral candidate in Victorian literature, has recently authored two articles claiming that Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" was Charles Dodgson's attempt to satirize the "new mathematics" of his day. We disagree completely with her thesis.

Another Pun Quiz. The misdefinitions usually also hint at the true meanings. Numbers in parentheses are the letters in the answer; (3|4) is a charade, a seven letter word that splits into a three plus four letter pun. My answers are out back.

In the February 2009 Word Ways, Dave Morice celebrated his one-thousandth Kickshaws page, a self-portrait consisting of that number of signatures. His count should be augmented by Kickshaws through February 2010 plus non-Kickshaws articles, a total of 210 pages. No other author has exceeded this (I have 1030 and Dmitri Borgmann, 727).

Several common English adjectives have two distinct meanings, revealed by clearly distinguishable opposites. Here are several antonym pairs that illustrate this.

I recently discovered David Shulman's anagramed "sonnet" on "Washington Crossing the Delaware," written in 1936, in Douglas Hofstadter's review of Ross Eckler's Making the Alphabet Dance, as well as Shulman's reply to that review, in which he writes: "after waiting 60 years, I find that nobody so far has equaled or surpassed it."

Word Play In The L. Frank Baum Fantasies, Martin Gardner
Word Play In The L. Frank Baum Fantasies, Martin Gardner
Word Ways
Lyman Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and thirteen other Oz books, also wrote many fantasies for children that did not have Oz as a setting. In all these books he liked to make up names for persons, places, and things. These names often involved word play. Puns were the most common form, but Baum also indulged in anagrams, spoonerisms, reversals, and other forms of linguistic whimsies.

Put on a recording of Handel's Water Music to stimulate your gray matter for this one. Hidden among the words listed below are twenty creatures who spend all or a good part of their lives under water. To bring each to the surface, issue a replacement for one of the letters present and transpose the ensuing collection. As an illustration, UTTERS would turn into TURTLE after "L" displaces "S" and permutation is performed. Best of luck in your SEARCHES (which would eventually become SEAHORSE when "O" transplants "C"!)

Tic-Tac-Toe Played As A Word Game, Martin Gardner
Word Ways
In Problem 48 in Your Move (McGraw-Hill, 1971), David Silverman described a linguistic version of tic-tac-toe consisting of a stockpile of the words ARMY, CHAT, FISH, GIRL, HORN, KNIT, SOUP, SWAN and VOTE. Players alternately select words, and the first to collect three words sharing a common letter is the winner.
The Folklife Archives At Western Kentucky University: Past And Present, David Puglia
The Folklife Archives At Western Kentucky University: Past And Present, David Puglia
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This work focuses on Western Kentucky University’s Folklife Archives located in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Western Kentucky University has a rich history of folklore scholarship, dating back to at least the early 20th century and the work of Gordon Wilson. Folklore archives across the nation have long been repositories for the fieldwork of folklorists and a place to look to supplement future studies both of folklorists and other disciplines. Western Kentucky’s Folklife Archives are no exception, housing thousands of impressive pieces donated from many generations of folklore scholars. Yet very little has been written about the Western Kentucky Folklife Archives. Through …

Investigating Capabilities Associated With Ict Access And Use In Latino Micro-Enterprises, Travis Good, Luis Flores Morales, Sajda Qureshi
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
While the process by which Information Technology enables growth in medium and large enterprises has been wellresearched, the corresponding processes in micro-enterprises are poorly understood. In fact, such micro-enterprises lie at the heart of many economies. This insight is important as information technology enables businesses to connect with each other through knowledge networking to carry out their basic business operations. There is thus a need to build our understanding of how micro-enterprises access and use technology in order to be able to assess the benefits they derive from ICT adoption. Following an analysis of two case studies of Latino micro-enterprises …
Optional Scrambling In Child And Adult Ukrainian, Roksolana Mykhaylyk
Optional Scrambling In Child And Adult Ukrainian, Roksolana Mykhaylyk
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation investigates direct object scrambling in Ukrainian. Examination of various syntactic structures has demonstrated that Ukrainian speakers observe semantic/pragmatic constraints on scrambling insofar as only partitive/definite objects are shifted. However, it appears that the syntactic movement is applied only optionally given that objects can remain in situ even when appropriate semantic/pragmatic conditions for movement are met. This research investigates the hypothesis that what underlies scrambling is an obligatory grammatical process, but one that may be expressed in at least one of two ways: by syntactic movement or by prosodic (re)contouring. Apparent `optionality' of scrambling thus results from its simply …
Reasoning About Uncertainty And Correlated Beliefs, Hui Wan
Reasoning About Uncertainty And Correlated Beliefs, Hui Wan
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Reasoning about uncertainty has been an active area of research for over thirty years. With the advent of networked systems, especially the Web, it became important to be able to combine uncertain information that comes from different sources. One of the hard problems in this area is combining evidence obtained from correlated, possibly conflicting, information sources. This dissertation develops Belief Logic Programming (BLP), a novel form of quantitative logic programming that deals with uncertain and inconsistent information and is able to combine and correlate evidence obtained from non-independent information sources. BLP was inspired by Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence and belief combination …

Decolonize Philosophy/Being Life: The Power Of Discourse In Western And Africanist Epistemologies Of Life And The Revolution Of Language In Aids Narratives, David Clinton Wills
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Since Plato, Western Philosophy has offered accounts of creation entwining discussions from the philosophy of history, the philosophy of language, and the philosophy of race. These particular discussions are implicated by Africana Philosophy as the impetus for colonization and the Scramble for Africa. Together, with these accounts of creation from Western Philosophy and the critical theory of Africana Philosophy, this dissertation reads aspects of linguistic, epistemological, and ontological violence applied to Africa by the European imaginary. This dissertation argues that there is a legacy of that colonialist violence through Western Philosophy, as discussed in Africana Philosophy, and manifested in the …
