Frequency, Gradience, And Variation In Consonant Insertion, Young-Ran An Aug 2010

Frequency, Gradience, And Variation In Consonant Insertion, Young-Ran An

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation addresses the extent to which linguistic behavior can be described in terms of the projection of patterns from existing lexical items, through an investigation of Korean reduplication. Korean has a productive pattern of reduplication in which a consonant is inserted in a vowel-initial base, illustrated by forms such as alok-talok `mottled,' oto -poto; `chubby.' A wide range of consonants may be inserted, with variation both within and across speakers. Based on study of a Korean corpus as well as experiments in which native speakers formed reduplicated versions of nonce words, I argue that the choice of inserted consonants …

Communecation: A Rhizomatic Tale Of Participatory Technology, Postcoloniality And Professional Community, Kirsten J. Broadfoot, Debashish Munshi, Natalie Nelson-Marsh

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article explores our experiences in creating and participating with(in) a virtual conference organized as an experimental virtual network. These experiences demonstrate how physically co-located and virtual conferencing practices acting in tandem provide a greater opportunity for the inclusion of both diverse perspectives and participants in professional community. Using insights from postcolonial theory, we examine how the architecture of participation found in the technologies of Web 2.0 accentuates the potential for reclaiming some diversity of perspective and participation, facilitating a form of molecular community through conferencing practices. Finally, we provide theoretical and empirical insights and reflections on the social dynamics …

Let The Sounds Be Heard Phonemic Awareness Of The Emergent Reader, Ann Marie Evans Aug 2010

Let The Sounds Be Heard Phonemic Awareness Of The Emergent Reader, Ann Marie Evans

Education Masters

The purpose of this study was to see how the strategies of phonemic awareness develop the Emergent Reader’s reading ability. The students’ level of phonemic awareness varied among blending, segmentation and sound deletion. Data was collected through observations teacher and student one-to-one conferencing, and interviews with the literacy coach and speech pathologist. The findings showed that there were three specific behaviors of phonemic awareness: sound identification, repetition, and application of strategies in reading. The results indicated it is essential that students acquire phonemic awareness skills to develop their reading ability. Students need instruction and/or intervention from trained teachers to support …

Neural Reuse As A Source Of Developmental Homology, David S. Moore, Chris Moore Aug 2010

Neural Reuse As A Source Of Developmental Homology, David S. Moore, Chris Moore

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Neural reuse theories should interest developmental psychologists because these theories can potentially illuminate the developmental relations among psychological characteristics observed across the lifespan. Characteristics that develop by exploiting pre-existing neural circuits can be thought of as developmental homologues. And, understood in this way, the homology concept that has proven valuable for evolutionary biologists can be used productively to study psychological/behavioral development.

Word Ways

There can be no better venue for paying homage to celebrated writers than a journal devoted to wordplay. A score of such literary luminaries awaiting well-deserved recognition is concealed in the listing below. Revealing a name entails permuting the collection that results when a new letter replaces a given one in each word. To illustrate, after scrambling, the creators of Tom Sawyer and Robinson Crusoe will be exposed when "W" supplants "G" in GIANT and "O" does the same to "R" in FREED, respectively. A perfect score authorizes you to call yourself an author authority.

Look Back!, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

In a sense Martin Gardner was the founder of Word Ways, for he suggested the idea of such a magazine to Greenwood Periodicals and proposed Dmitri Borgmann as its first editor. After only a year as the editor, Dmitri resigned in November 1968 when Greenwood refused to pay him a salary of $5,000 per year. When Howard Bergerson, recruited by Joe Madachy (the editor of another Greenwood journal), agreed to be editor without salary, Dmitri angrily wrote him to say that he considered Howard's action "extremely hostile and downright treacherous" and that Howard would never hear from him again.

'Cause The Bible Told Me So, Martin Gardner

Word Ways

To The Editor: For years I have been entertained by letters calling attention to what the Bible has to say about homosexuality, masturbation, wine drinking, and kindred topics. Are these letter writers aware, I wonder, that the Old Testament condones smoking?

Consult Genesis 24:64. We are told that "Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel."

Neuropsychological Aspects Of Fetal Transplant Surgery For The Treatment Of Parkinson's Disease: A Longitudinal Study, Gina M. Signoracci Aug 2010

Neuropsychological Aspects Of Fetal Transplant Surgery For The Treatment Of Parkinson's Disease: A Longitudinal Study, Gina M. Signoracci

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease often characterized at the time of diagnosis by resting tremor, rigidity, and/or bradykinesia. Over the course of the disease, motor functioning, cognitive functioning, and quality of life typically decline as the effectiveness of drug therapies diminishes. This study utilized medical, neuropsychological and quality of life data that were collected as part of a double-blind placebo surgery trial in which 40 patients were randomly assigned to receive bilateral transplantation of embryonic mesencephalic dopamine cells into the putamen or sham surgery. Nineteen women and 21 men participated in the study. Analyses focused on relationships between …

Effects Of Narrative Video Script Advance Organizer Strategies Used To Introduce Video In The Foreign Language Classroom, Philip D. Ambard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study compared participant comprehension of content in foreign language videos using 2 different advance organizer (AO) strategies. The students were 50 college students enrolled in 3 sections of an intermediate-level Spanish course at the United States Air Force Academy.

In the collaborative group reading condition (AOg), students read a target language narrative video script aloud in small groups. Students then watched the video corresponding to the script they had read and took a 10-question English only multiple choice test. In the quiet individual reading condition (AOq), students read the same narrative video script quietly before watching the same video …

Cross-Market Model Adaptation With Pairwise Preference Data For Web Search Ranking, Jing Bai, Fernando Diaz, Yi Chang, Zhaohui Zheng, Keke Chen Aug 2010

Cross-Market Model Adaptation With Pairwise Preference Data For Web Search Ranking, Jing Bai, Fernando Diaz, Yi Chang, Zhaohui Zheng, Keke Chen

Kno.e.sis Publications

Machine-learned ranking techniques automatically learn a complex document ranking function given training data. These techniques have demonstrated the effectiveness and flexibility required of a commercial web search. However, manually labeled training data (with multiple absolute grades) has become the bottleneck for training a quality ranking function, particularly for a new domain. In this paper, we explore the adaptation of machine-learned ranking models across a set of geographically diverse markets with the market-specific pairwise preference data, which can be easily obtained from clickthrough logs. We propose a novel adaptation algorithm, Pairwise-Trada, which is able to adapt ranking models that are trained …

Border Pedagogy And The Acculturation Of Korean Students In U.S. Institutions Of Higher Education, Randy Green

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study aimed at identifying learning and teaching strategies that can promote the process of acculturation for Korean students in institutions of higher education in the United States. In particular, the study attempted to pinpoint ways in which these students and their instructors can become aware of and resist educational tendencies and approaches that promote hegemony and devalue cultural perspectives and experiences as well as construct meaning within the context of a worldview that is influenced by both Korean and U.S. cultures. It was hoped that the identification of these skills and strategies would aid both students and instructors in …

Stepping Out Of The Vehicle: The Potential Of Arizona V. Gant To End Automatic Searches Incident To Arrest Beyond The Vehicular Context, Angad Singh

Celebrating WCL Student Authors

“Because the law says we can do it” was the response Officer Griffith offered when asked why officers searched Rodney Gant’s car when he was arrested for driving with a suspended license. Officer Griffith’s honest answer exemplifies the effect of prior Supreme Court decisions on search incident to arrest power in the vehicle context: that a vehicle search incident to arrest is a police entitlement divorced from any rationale whatsoever. Concerns for officer safety and preservation of evidence -- legal justifications that generally permit warrantless searches incident to arrest generally -- had been utterly abandoned by the Court in the …

Adult Attachment Representations And Secure Base Use And Support In Couple Problem Solving Interactions, Susan Brockmeyer Aug 2010

Adult Attachment Representations And Secure Base Use And Support In Couple Problem Solving Interactions, Susan Brockmeyer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Validity is more than a rich suite of empirical correlates. They have to be the right correlates. In the case of the Adult Attachment Interview, validation includes showing links to the secure base concept, the central concept in Bowlby's and Ainsworth's attachment theory. Important evidence for the AAI's validity comes from longitudinal research linking infant Strange Situation classifications to the same person's AAI classifications 20 years later (e.g. | Waters et al. 2000). In addition, Crowell et al. (2002) provided strong support for the attachment relevance of the AAI by showing that narrative coherence in the AAI is significantly related …

Rhetorical Problems And Cinematic Solutions: The Visual Arguments Of The 'Obama Infomercial', Bryan Ricke

All Theses

Most Americans remember the outcome of the presidential election on November 2nd, 2008, and the intense media coverage of the entire campaign. Just three nights before Election Day, the Barack Obama campaign purchased primetime air slots on seven major broadcast and cable stations across the country to air a 30-minute 'infomercial' entitled
American Stories: American Solutions. This thesis looks at this television program with a specific focus not on the verbal message of American Stories: American Solutions, but on how this message is framed through cinematography. The thesis first explores research in the fields of rhetoric, film, politics, and race, …

Assessing And Accommodating Addressees' Needs: The Role Of Speakers' Prior Expectations And Addressees' Feedback, Anna Katharina Kuhlen Aug 2010

Assessing And Accommodating Addressees' Needs: The Role Of Speakers' Prior Expectations And Addressees' Feedback, Anna Katharina Kuhlen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In dialogue, a conversational partner's behavior is not solely the product of one individual mind, but instead reflects a process of mutual coordination between both conversational partners. This project investigates how speakers' and addressees' behavior is shaped by addressees' informational needs and by speakers' prior expectations of addressees' informational needs. In two experimental settings pairs of speakers and addressees were observed while giving directions (Experiment 1), or narrating short stories (Experiments 2a & 2b). Addressees had either high informational needs (the information they were receiving was new to them) or low informational needs (they were already familiar with the information). …

A Home Divided: A Post-National Approach To Family, Gender And Region In Modern Galician Narrative, Danny Michael Barreto Aug 2010

A Home Divided: A Post-National Approach To Family, Gender And Region In Modern Galician Narrative, Danny Michael Barreto

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

By focusing on the case of Galicia, A Home Divided represents an attempt to understand the multiple linguistic and gendered subjectivities that are enclosed within and excluded from larger regional/national Iberian identities. Contemporary debates about identity in post-national Iberia are often contingent upon the belief that since the nineteenth century there was a singular, official Spanish national identity that in the last few decades has been superseded by the political recognition of Spain's autonomous communities. I engage with these discussions by taking nineteenth-century Galicia as a starting point for thinking about post-national Iberian identities. Through a close reading of the …

Female Gothic, Chinese And American Styles : Zhang Ailing's Chuanqi In Comparison With Stories By Eudora Welty And Carson Mccullers., Zuqiong Caroline Ma 1980-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to situate our understanding of Zhang Ailing's Chuanqi as part of global women's efforts to establish a voice of their own by way of hijacking patriarchal literary heritage. In order to show Zhang Ailing as a conscious weaver of female Gothic, Chinese style, my study pursues two parallel routes of argument. First, proceeding from Zhang's unique vision of human experience as an interplay of the ordinary and the extra-ordinary, my dissertation delineates her indebtedness to and rebellion against traditional Chinese "Gothic," especially the genre of Chuanqi. To illuminate the common raison d’être of Zhang's modem romances in …

Preparing Low-Income Middle And Secondary Students To Participate Effectively In Academic Discourse Through Writing, Franc Lacinski

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Students from low-income families often perform poorly on formal assessments in language arts. Examining data using the 2008-2009 State of New Jersey Department of Education School Report Cards, a comparison was made between low-income districts and affluent districts in three areas: High School Proficiency Assessment Language Arts Literacy Scores, SAT Verbal Scores and SAT Essay Scores. Students from low-income districts performed significantly lower in these areas than students from the higher income districts and from the average performance rates for the State of New Jersey. This lag in performance affects students’ choices for higher education, for job opportunities, as well …

Discrimination And Health: A Longitudinal Study, Jun Xu

All Theses

This study examines several questions about discrimination using a longitudinal survey from the 2006 and 2008 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Results show that whites are least likely to experience discrimination as we expected. In addition, the data provides support for the hypothesis that people with higher total household assets and higher household total number of members are less likely to experience discrimination. However, contrary to my hypothesis, females have smaller odds of experiencing discrimination compared to males. People with higher education levels are more likely to report major discrimination events compared to those with lower education …

Although we know that stereotyping is not an accurate way to appreciate human beings, nevertheless, it is still used as a means to assess human behavior and consequently, misconceptions occur. One of the dominant groups living in Malaysia is the Malays who are often perceived more positively than others. Of the three dominant ethnic groups found in peninsular Malaysia, they are often described as a graceful community which places great emphasis on respect and care for the feeling of others and are imbued with refined behavior through appropriate upbringing and religious values. The Malay community tends to avoid conflicts and …

Introducing Writing Across The Curriculum Into China: Feasability And Adaptation, Dan Wu Aug 2010

Introducing Writing Across The Curriculum Into China: Feasability And Adaptation, Dan Wu

All Dissertations

Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) is a successful educational movement initiated in the US in the 1970s to promote better teaching and learning. It has developed to incorporate writing, speaking, digital educational technologies, and other communication modalities in the past several decades. WAC initiatives have now been successfully transplanted outside of the U.S. in nations and areas such as Australia, Sweden, Germany, and Hong Kong, yet one country that has not endorsed a WAC approach is China. Given the current tension between access and quality for Chinese higher education after an unprecedented enrollment expansion, incorporating WAC approaches is currently a …
