Demand-Side Programs To Stimulate Adoption Of Broadband: What Works?, James Prieger, Janice A. Hauge Aug 2010

Demand-Side Programs To Stimulate Adoption Of Broadband: What Works?, James Prieger, Janice A. Hauge

School of Public Policy Working Papers

We examine the evidence available on the efficacy of demand-side programs intended to stimulate broadband adoption. We review studies that attempt to measure results. Our suggestions for future program evaluations are to include cost-benefit analysis as a standard part of program review and to make clear that the purpose of evaluation is to assess progress made toward the ultimate policy goals rather than the program’s proximate implementation goals. Appropriate data must be collected to draw conclusions, and appropriate statistical methods must be used to determine the causal impacts of a program. This has rarely been done to date.

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Instruction Using Traditional Methods To Instruction Using Reading Apprenticeship, David Carlton Lowery Aug 2010

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Instruction Using Traditional Methods To Instruction Using Reading Apprenticeship, David Carlton Lowery

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to compare the effects of literature instruction using traditional methods to literature instruction using Reading Apprenticeship (RA) to determine if outcomes of attitude and achievement of students enrolled in World Literature courses are changed. Participants included 104 students from 1 junior college in a southeastern state. Of these 104 students, 68 were taught using a traditional method of instruction, and 36 were taught using the RA method of instruction. Students were administered the Rhody Secondary Reading Attitude Survey to determine attitude scores at the beginning of the semester and attitude scores at the …

On The Design-Build Of Small Pavilions, Agrippa Spence Kellum Aug 2010

On The Design-Build Of Small Pavilions, Agrippa Spence Kellum

Theses and Dissertations

Design-build is the process whereby a project is constructed by the same entity that designed it. Detailed narratives are provided for the collaborative, integrated designbuild of two small, relatively contemporary pavilions. The first was constructed as part of a design-build workshop taught by Steve Badanes, director of the Neighborhood Design/Build Studio at the University of Washington Department of Architecture and founder of the international architecture firm The Jersey Devil. The second, a multi-use pavilion on the site of a former junkyard, was implemented as a local volunteer community service project using Badanes' method. A third proposal is also described; an …

Paul Auster's Rhizomatic Fictions, Gary Matthew Varner Aug 2010

Paul Auster's Rhizomatic Fictions, Gary Matthew Varner

Theses and Dissertations

This project examines some of the most notable fiction of contemporary American writer Paul Auster through the postmodern lens of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s rhizome. Auster’s novels often feature characters that are also writers, characters that resurface in subsequent novels, and characters that bear a resemblance to Paul Auster himself. This thesis uses the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari to better understand the significance of these puzzling characters. Ultimately, the model of the rhizome reveals a particular connectivity between Auster’s works underpinned by multiplicities, refrains, and a dislocation of origins.

Faculty Members' And Graduate Students' Perceptions Of Multicultural Education In The College Of Education, Tinukwa C. Okojie-Boulder

Theses and Dissertations

The study examined faculty members’ and graduate students’ perceptions of multicultural education and to ascertain which demographic factors had the most influence on participants’ perceptions. This study also examined whether there were any significant differences between faculty members’ and graduate students’ perceptions of the concept. Validity of the quantitative instruments was determined by a panel of experts. Internal consistency and reliability was calculated using factor analysis, Cronbach’s alpha and test/retest reliability. A mixed method research design was used in this study which included a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The surveys were completed by 313 graduate students and 48 …

Alternative Literacies, Resistance, And Spatial Representations In The Do-It-Yourself (Diy) Culture Of Zine Publication In New Orleans, Nathan Jessee Aug 2010

Alternative Literacies, Resistance, And Spatial Representations In The Do-It-Yourself (Diy) Culture Of Zine Publication In New Orleans, Nathan Jessee

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Zines are small circulation media that amateurs make and distribute. Inspired by both the lack of ethnographic research on the do-it-yourself (DIY) culture of zine-making in urban studies and the growing interest in ethnographically oriented research in literacy studies, rhetoric, and linguistics this research explores the people, places, and practices behind zine publication in New Orleans, Louisiana through participant observation at two specialized loci—the Iron Rail and punk shows—as well as semi-structured interviews with people who make, distribute, and consume zines. This research argues that zine-makers use zines to reinterpret urban space in search of an authentic relationship with the …

Toward A Theory Of Female Subjectivity, Dimitra Cupo Aug 2010

Toward A Theory Of Female Subjectivity, Dimitra Cupo

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Poststructuralist accounts of gender provide a useful theoretical space to unpack the workings of power and domination as they structure the organization of our language, representations, concepts, and discourse in general. One significant flaw of this theory is a failure to adequately account for the social realm of embodied individuals, social interactions, and interpretive moments. In this paper, I offer conventional femininity as a particular type of gendered habitus that highlights this theoretical flaw as it necessarily links what is promising and useful about poststructuralist accounts of gender with the physical, social, interactive, and interpretive everyday lives of women.

A Hybrid System For Glossary Generation Of Feature Film Content For Language Learning, Ryan Arthur Corradini Aug 2010

A Hybrid System For Glossary Generation Of Feature Film Content For Language Learning, Ryan Arthur Corradini

Theses and Dissertations

This report introduces a suite of command-line tools created to assist content developers with the creation of rich supplementary material to use in conjunction with feature films and other video assets in language teaching. The tools are intended to leverage open-source corpora and software (the OPUS OpenSubs corpus and the Moses statistical machine translation system, respectively), but are written in a modular fashion so that other resources could be leveraged in their place. The completed tool suite facilitates three main tasks, which together constitute this project. First, several scripts created for use in preparing linguistic data for the system are …

Navigating Tensions In The Process Of Change: An English Educator’S Dilemma Management In The Revision And Implementation Of A Diversity-Infused Methods Course, Mileidis Gort, Wendy J. Glenn

Teaching and Learning Articles and Papers

In response to growing concerns among faculty regarding the lack of attention to the bilingual student population in our pre-service teacher education program, the authors engaged in a shared self-study of the process of revising and implementing a secondary English methods course with explicit attention to the special needs of bilingual/bicultural learners. The paper describes how the second author, an English educator, with support from the first author, a mentor/colleague in bilingual education, identified and negotiated tensions and dilemmas that arose in a process of curricular transformation toward culturally and linguistically responsive teacher education practice. The study highlights several points …

Great Men, Little Black Dresses, & The Virtues Of Keeping One’S Feet On The Ground, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

One can use phenomenology, along with the usual tools of scholarship and analysis, to make the point that the promises of the 1960’s and 1970’s especially those of the women’s movement, have yet to bear significant fruit in the academy. Hence, for everybody’s non-thingly phenomenology of non-practice, a handy-dandy wiki-check on the net yields the claim that “U.S. Department of Education reports indicate that philosophy is one of the least proportionate, and possibly the least proportionate, fields in the humanities with respect to gender,” with a rather dismal addendum reporting that in “2004, the percentage of Ph.D.s in philosophy going …

Accessing Legal Information Across Boundaries: A New Challenge, Ginevra Peruginelli Aug 2010

Accessing Legal Information Across Boundaries: A New Challenge, Ginevra Peruginelli

International Journal of Legal Information

In the actual multilingual and multicultural environment there is a significant need, in the academic world, in the legal profession, in business settings as well as in the context of public administration services to citizens, of common understanding and exchange of legal concepts of the various legal systems. At the same time, there is a strong pressure for the reservation of their basic sense and value. Both requirements are quite difficult to meet, and they are complicated by the complexity of legal language and by the variety of modalities used to express law within the various legal systems. Unlike a …

Judging A Book By More Than Its Cover Examining The Influences On The Independent Reading Choices Of Middle School Students, Megan Bowen Aug 2010

Judging A Book By More Than Its Cover Examining The Influences On The Independent Reading Choices Of Middle School Students, Megan Bowen

Education Masters

This study examined the influences on the independent reading selections of adolescents in a rural middle school. Data was collected through student and teacher questionnaires, analyzing students’ independent book projects, and reviewing data from the school library. The findings showed that adolescents’ book choices are influenced by genre, subject interest, peer and adult recommendations, series books, and the cover. This research indicates that teachers should discover their students’ interests, have a wide selection of books in their classroom library, allow time during class for peer book discussions, and display books so that the covers are visible to create a positive …

Mathematics In Motion: A Handbook Of Kinesthetic Teaching Strategies, Janie Brown Salazar Aug 2010

Mathematics In Motion: A Handbook Of Kinesthetic Teaching Strategies, Janie Brown Salazar

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Howard Gardner first proposed his theory of Multiple Intelligences and the bodily-kinesthetic intelligence in 1983. Unfortunately, almost three decades later, teacher programs still do not train teachers about Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence in depth; nor do they train teachers how to integrate Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence into daily learning procedures and classroom environment. Schools focus very little on other factors that contribute to how successful a person might be in life, throughout life. Incorporating bodily-kinesthetic strategies in teaching can positively influence children's learning experience. The following research project investigates the research on the bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic teaching strategies, teaching strategies linked to student achievement, …

Studies In The Use Of Time Into Utterance As A Predictive Feature For Language Modeling, Nigel Ward, Alejandro Vega

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In (Ward and Vega 2008) we examined how how word probabilities vary with time into utterance, and proposed a method for using this information to improve a language model. In this report we examine some ancillary issues in the modeling and exploitation of these regularities.

80 Years Of Gardner Magic, Jeremiah Farrell, Karen Farrell

Word Ways

The magician and historiam Max Maven poignantly eulogized Martin Gardner in his article "In Memoriam" in the July 2010 issue of GENII magazine. Commenting on the diverse interests of Gardner in non-fiction, puzzles, recreational mathematics, philosophy, games, skepticism, word play and magic, Maven noted: "So far as is known, the final Gardner publication during his lifetime was a magic trick that he contributed to the May 2010 issue of Word Ways, a quarterly journal with a small but fervent readership. I will mention, without humility, that the trick was based on one of mine -- which in turn was …

Mathematics And Word Play, Martin Gardner

Many mathematicians enjoy wordplay, and for obvious reasons. it is almost a branch of combinatorial mathematics. The pleasure derived from solving a combinatorial problem is very much like the pleasure of solving a cryptogram or a crossword puzzle, or constructing a good palindrome.

A Tribute To Martin Gardner, Harold R. Jacobs Aug 2010

A Tribute To Martin Gardner, Harold R. Jacobs

Word Ways

The most recent addition to my mathematics library is Here's Looking At Euclid (Free Press, 2010), written by a young British journalist, Alex Bellos. The first words of praise on the back of the dust jacket were written by Martin Gardner. It made me feel sad to realize that this is undoubtedly the last book to which Gardner paid tribute. It is certainly worthy o it because Bellos has a delightful writing style similar in many ways to that of Gardner.
