Comparison Of Water And Soil Quality From Locally Available Soil Amendments To Biomass Sorghum, John Wesley Phillip Klasky Dec 2010

Comparison Of Water And Soil Quality From Locally Available Soil Amendments To Biomass Sorghum, John Wesley Phillip Klasky

Student Theses and Dissertations

Effects of Locally-Available Soil Amendments on Water and Soil Quality It is important to feed and fuel our growing population in sustainable ways that maximize available resources and minimize negative environmental impacts. Locally-available soil amendments including municipal biosolids, food industry effluent, and pelletized poultry litter were evaluated in this study to measure potential soil and water quality effects. A greenhouse microcosm study involving a potential biofuel crop, Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, was conducted using these soil amendments. Leachate from the microcosms was analyzed for nitrate, nitrite, and orthophosphate. Soils from the microcosms were analyzed for carbon, nitrogen, active carbon, and …

The Impact Of Multiple Viewings Of Educational Television Programming On Young Children's Acquisition Of Basic Concepts And Social Interaction Skills, Brandi Worthington

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effect that educational television viewing had on young children's knowledge of basic concepts and social interaction skills. In order to accomplish this purpose, two groups of children were assembled. Groups were matched for gender and age. Group one consisted of children from a tightly-knit religious sect whose families and culture were opposed to specific types of technology, such as television. Group two consisted of children from families who were not opposed to viewing television per se and that had been exposed to educational television. The Wiig Assessment of Basic Concepts (WABC) and Play Observation Scale (POS) …

Implementing Rfid Automation Into A Small Scale Aircraft Maintenance System, Daniel D. Bowman Dec 2010

Implementing Rfid Automation Into A Small Scale Aircraft Maintenance System, Daniel D. Bowman

Purdue Polytechnic Directed Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore and identify where technology automation could be used to reduce time and wasted labor in aircraft inventory and maintenance processes. The research used passive RFID AutoID technology due to its capabilities in data logging and relatively hands-off, passive use. The Purdue University’s aircraft maintenance system operates under old time card systems with paper inspection, check outs of tools, and non-routine inspections, contributing to long search times when looking for maintenance problems or lost inventory that may have happened up to and over a year ago. Furthermore, there are general inefficiencies due to …

Faculty Attitudes Towards College Athletics And The Academic Competency Of Student-Athletes At A Ncaa Division-I Institution, Christopher Atwater Dec 2010

Faculty Attitudes Towards College Athletics And The Academic Competency Of Student-Athletes At A Ncaa Division-I Institution, Christopher Atwater

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to examine faculty attitudes towards the role of college athletics and the academic competency of student-athletes at a NCAA Division-I Institution. By analyzing faculty attitudes, this study contributes to a better understanding of factors associated with how educators view athletics in higher education and how they develop their attitudes towards student-athletes from an academic perspective. Though prior research indicates quantitatively that faculty possess distinct views of these concepts, there was a gap between measured attitudes and known factors that contribute to these attitudes. By analyzing both quantitative and qualitative results, this investigation advanced the …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Electrospun Gelatin/Dendrimer Scaffold Encapsulated With A Silver As A Potential Antimicrobial Wound Dressing, Alpana Dongargaonkar Dec 2010

Synthesis And Characterization Of Electrospun Gelatin/Dendrimer Scaffold Encapsulated With A Silver As A Potential Antimicrobial Wound Dressing, Alpana Dongargaonkar

Theses and Dissertations

A novel nanofiber scaffold was fabricated and characterized as a potential antimicrobial wound dressing. Half generation polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer G3.5 was covalently conjugated to gelatin. Gelatin alone or with gelatin-dendrimer conjugates was electrospun into nanofiber scaffolds. Gelatin is a derivative of natural collagen, and it is biocompatible, non-toxic and inexpensive, making it a desirable component in a wound dressing. Dendrimers are synthetic polymers comprising of a central core, internal branches and reactive surface groups. They provide a structurally controlled architecture for drug release. Silver was incorporated into the scaffold in situ due to its broad spectrum of antimicrobial properties. The …

Distribution And Molecular Analysis Of Avian Malaria Vectors On Four Central Virginia Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria Citrea) Breeding Sites, Catherine Wallace Dec 2010

Distribution And Molecular Analysis Of Avian Malaria Vectors On Four Central Virginia Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria Citrea) Breeding Sites, Catherine Wallace

Theses and Dissertations

Avian malaria is a devastating disease that has decimated numerous bird species. This study sought to identify the vectors of avian malaria at four central Virginia Prothonotary warbler breeding sites. Twenty one thousand mosquitoes were collected and Culex salinarius, Cx. erraticus, and Cx. pipiens/restuans were found to be the dominant species at these sites. Geographic factors, such as crop land and forest type, were determined to be potential indicators for species abundance variation between sites. Of the mosquitoes collected, ninety one (0.4%) were identified as blood fed. The blood fed mosquitoes were found to have fed on avian, mammalian, amphibian, …

Ils …

Dissertations

Background Information: The prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has dramatically risen over the last decades. It is known that children with ASD visit health care providers (HCP) more frequently than typically developing peers. Given behavioral and medical complexities of these children, mothers may experience barriers in this process. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of mothers’ experiences of taking their children to the HCP. Aims of this study were to reveal mothers’ concerns related to these experiences, examine resources and barriers affecting the quality of the visit, and discover more about the effect …
