Estimating Expected Fire Suppression Cost Savings Due To Vegetation Management On Pinyon Pine And Juniper Invaded Sagebrush Rangelands, Kimberly Rollins, Mimako (Mimi) Kobayashi
Reports
Wildfire suppression costs in the United States have increased steadily over the last decades (Stephens and Ruth 2005, Calkin et al. 2005, Gebert et al 2007, Westerling et al. 2006, GAO 2007), with related expenditures by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management exceeding a billion dollars per year in four out of the seven years leading up to 2006 (Gebert et al 2008). Pre-fire vegetation management on public lands is recognized as an important tool for reducing expected wildfire suppression costs (GAO 2007).Using data from wildfire suppression costs across the US, Lankoande and Yoder (2006) estimate that …

Caring Beyond Constraint: A Nursing Model Of Presence In A Time Limited Procedural Practice, Laura Becker
Caring Beyond Constraint: A Nursing Model Of Presence In A Time Limited Procedural Practice, Laura Becker
Theses and Graduate Projects
The purpose of this paper is to support the value of maintaining presence within a time limited procedural practice. Specifically, it presents the significance of a nursing presence model based on Jean Watson's human caring theory within an outpatient procedural endoscopy unit which has high patient volumes and time limited processes. It describes the process for developing a care model of nursing presence and methods used to integrate this model into practice. It also includes an evaluation of the methods to determine themes and make comparisons to determine effectiveness of theory integration into nursing practice.
Awareness Cultivation: Designing A Transcultural Patient Family Advisory Council, Lisa G. Peterson
Awareness Cultivation: Designing A Transcultural Patient Family Advisory Council, Lisa G. Peterson
Theses and Graduate Projects
This project explores the rationale that supports designing and implementing a transcultural patient family advisory council (PFAC) at a large academic center in the Midwest where eight disease-diagnosis based PFAC's already exist. Potential pitfalls and obstacles that could interfere with such a council being successful will also be reviewed. In addition, Madeline Leininger's theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality is applied to add support to this effort. Specifically, the stranger to trusted friend enabler explains how having such a committee can foster mutually beneficial relationships that demonstrate a change in culture and attitudes at this traditional physician-lead institution.
Replicating Success: Developing An Educational Process For Improving Nursing Accuracy When Using A Patient Classification System, Dewey M. Moulton
Replicating Success: Developing An Educational Process For Improving Nursing Accuracy When Using A Patient Classification System, Dewey M. Moulton
Theses and Graduate Projects
The use of patient classification systems (PCS), within hospitals has been and still is utilized primarily for determining staffing requirements, based upon the projected needs of the patient. Since its conception in the 1950's, health care management has worked to develop a system that accurately depicts those needs to provide good patient care. Recently, a major tertiary health care center located in the Midwest region of the United States implemented a revised patient classification system within its acute care setting. Nurses were provided various levels of education regarding its use. Because of this, accuracy by nurses using the patient classification …

The purpose of this research will be to study the relationship of Administrative Supervisor rounding and the employee engagement of unit charge nurses. Understanding the significance regarding hospital leadership presence during off shifts, weekends and holidays can have an impact on employee satisfaction, retention, ill calls, and hospital morale and produce better patient care. The hypothesis for this research focuses on the physical presence of the Administrative Supervisor which leads to greater perceived leadership support and …
Using Led Lights As Prompts To Teach Receptive Identification To Preschool Children With Autism, Allison Pavlicek
Using Led Lights As Prompts To Teach Receptive Identification To Preschool Children With Autism, Allison Pavlicek
Honors Theses
The purpose of the study "Using LED Lights as Prompts to Teach Receptive Identification to Preschool Children with Autism" is to implement a different prompting procedure than traditional least-to-most prompting procedures in teaching. One prompting procedure commonly used in discrete trial training classrooms involves least-to-most prompting in the form of gestural and physical prompts to guide children to make correct responses during teaching procedures. To specifically teach receptive identification skills, an apparatus with LED lights was used as a prompting device to vary light intensities on stimuli that the child will choose from. This alternate method of prompting may enable …

Coordinating Code In Virginia’S Historic Districts, Drew Gruber
Coordinating Code In Virginia’S Historic Districts, Drew Gruber
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the evolution and limitations of regulatory and historic district overlay zones and the inherent conflicts between the two as applied in Virginia. Historic district overlay zoning and the establishment of local historic districts and design review boards has developed in response to the failures of traditional zoning techniques to adequately protect the architectural character of Virginia’s historic urban landscapes. After almost fifty years of practice and improvement in the fields of urban planning and historic preservation, synchronizing regulatory and historic district overlay zones still presents difficulties for municipal administrators. Several Virginia jurisdictions are highlighted in the thesis …

Woman and Child Health
Background:Pneumonia is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children younger than five years of age. Most deaths occur during infancy and in low-income countries. Daily regimens of zinc have been reported to prevent acute lower respiratory tract infection and reduce child mortality.
Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of zinc supplementation in the prevention of pneumonia in children aged two to 59 months.
Search Methods: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library 2010, Issue 2), which contains the Acute Respiratory Infections Group's Specialised Register, MEDLINE (1966 to January Week 2, 2010), EMBASE …
