Are You In Control? How Timing And Severity Of Trauma Shape Perceived Self-Agency, Kinsey L. Henrichsen, Caleb A. Sanders, Carissa L. Philippi
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Exposure to trauma may alter self-agency, or the sense that one can influence outcomes and exert control over life circumstances. The present study examined whether the timing and severity of traumatic experiences are associated with perceived self-agency across development. Based on prior research, we tested whether trauma occurring earlier in life would be associated with lower self-agency than trauma occurring later, and whether greater trauma severity would be associated with further reductions in perceived control. Participants were 116 trauma-exposed adults (38 male; 78 female) who reported trauma exposure using the Life Stressor Checklist. Trauma variables included age at earliest trauma, …

Enantioselectivity Of The Photochemical Continuous-Flow Isomerization Of Humulones, Gregory M. Giovine, Trevor Smith, Bruce Hamper
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Humulones, the primary natural product present in the historically significant hop flower, represent a largely unexplored candidate for structure-based pharmaceutical design. Showing promising biological activity as an anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory agent, humulones are of interest both for their bioactive properties and for their long-established tolerability and natural abundance. Humulones undergo a characteristic isomerization reaction, where the six-membered substituted phloroglucinol ring contracts to a five-membered ring isohumulone, under a variety of conditions, including those enabled by brewing conditions (thermal, metal-catalyzed) and by exposure to UV light. Optimization of the photocatalyzed isomerization of n-humulone to n-isohumulone in flow conditions resulted in a …

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Disease Made Invisible By Stereotypes, Isabella Tober
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is a very complex disease that is often overshadowed by public opinion. Stereotypes within modern-day media have turned this disease into a social joke, leading individuals to suffer in silence and isolate in fear of judgment. Historically, society has allowed this invisibility to be placed upon the disease, but so has the medical industry through misdiagnosis and inaccurate treatment. The reality of OCD is very real and impactful for those living with this condition. Through proper education and exposure to the truth behind OCD, negative discourse will turn positive, ultimately allowing people to feel visible and seek proper …

System For Controlled Debonding Of A Component Using Software Arming And Enclosure Sensing, Alex Pelosi
System For Controlled Debonding Of A Component Using Software Arming And Enclosure Sensing, Alex Pelosi
Defensive Publications Series
A system for controlled debonding can utilize a multi-stage, software-assisted process. For example, a release procedure may be initiated through a software interface, which can arm a subordinate control module and may start a security timer. The system can then utilize one or more integrated sensors to detect an event, such as the physical opening of the device's enclosure. Upon detection, the control module can actuate a circuit to deliver a controlled electrical current to an electrically-releasable adhesive layer, which can weaken its bond. This approach may simplify component removal and can reduce the risk of damage associated with some …

Routing Ml Inference Requests To Specialized Nodes Based On Prefill-Decode Classification, Satish Kondalam, Muninder Sambi, Rohan Grover, Aman Ahuja
Defensive Publications Series
Traditional hardware-based routing for machine learning (ML) inference requests can be inefficient in resource-constrained environments, such as air-gapped or sovereign deployments, potentially leading to system bottlenecks and suboptimal resource utilization. A disclosed technology relates to a system where a gateway component can classify incoming ML inference requests based on their computational profile, for example, as either prefill (dominant) or decode (dominant). The gateway can then route each request to a specialized node within a disaggregated hardware cluster, such as dedicated prefill nodes optimized for computation or decode nodes optimized for memory bandwidth. This application-aware routing method, which may be combined …

Recent energy supply disruptions have prompted some governments to deploy demand-side measures as emergency responses. These crises reveal that systems built on high and inflexible energy and material demand are structurally exposed to shocks. This vulnerability is rooted in earlier political, infrastructural, and economic choices that locked societies into resource-intensive mobility, housing, and production. Crises are not only moments requiring rapid response; they are junctures where structural weaknesses become available for reform. We argue that demand-side measures are essential for reducing the immediate pain of crises and for reconfiguring provisioning systems toward lasting resilience. Drawing on examples spanning oil, electricity, …

Modelling Acute Haemorrhagic Conjunctivitis In East Africa: An Integrated Approach To Transmission Dynamics And Outbreak Response Strategies, Geofrey Wingi Sikazwe
Tanzania Journal of Science
Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) poses a significant global health risk, with the potential for rapid spread during outbreaks. For instance, a localized outbreak in Yunnan Province, China, recorded infection rates of up to 48%, illustrating how transmission can intensify under favourable epidemiological and environmental conditions. Existing mathematical models of AHC transmission overlook seasonal variations, a critical factor in epidemic spread. This study combines species distribution models (SDMs) and epidemiological modelling to analyse key drivers of AHC in East Africa. We use the SEIR type (Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered - incorporating waning immunity) framework with temperature-dependent infectivity rate as the key driver of an …
