Money Matters: The Influence Of Financial Factors On Graduate Student Persistence, Terrell L. Strayhorn Dec 2010

Money Matters: The Influence Of Financial Factors On Graduate Student Persistence, Terrell L. Strayhorn

Journal of Student Financial Aid

National statistics indicate that approximately 50 percent of all graduate students fail to complete their degree; thus, understanding the factors that influence their persistence is an important research objective. Using data from a nationally representative sample of bachelor's degree recipients, the study aimed to answer three questions: What proportion of 1992-1993 bachelor's degree recipients enrolled in graduate school by 2003? Of those, what proportion persisted in graduate school? Controlling for background and academic differences, what effect do financial factors have on persistence in graduate school? Descriptive and hierarchal binomial logistic regression results suest that 36 percent of bachelor's degree recipients …

An Evaluation Of Cardiorespiratory Responses And Ventilatory Efficiency During Treadmill And Cycling Exercise In Overweight Adolescents, Amanda Scheps Dec 2010

An Evaluation Of Cardiorespiratory Responses And Ventilatory Efficiency During Treadmill And Cycling Exercise In Overweight Adolescents, Amanda Scheps

Theses and Dissertations

The assessment of ventilatory efficiency (VE/VCO2 slope) is increasingly being utilized to complement traditional cardiorespiratory fitness testing during graded exercise. The purpose of this study was to compare cardiorespiratory responses and ventilatory efficiency in obese children during a progressive exercise test to volitional fatigue performed on a treadmill and a cycle ergometer. Fifteen obese male (N=3) and female (N=12) adolescents aged 10 to 18 years were recruited in the study and completed both the treadmill and cycle ergometer trials. Mean age and BMI of the sample was 13.3 years and 38.0 kg/m2, respectively. Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and ventilatory efficiency …

1,2,3,4-Tetrahydroacridones As Potential Inhibitors Of Atovaquone-Resistant And Atovaquone- Susceptible P. Falciparum Isolates Tm90-C2b And W2, Lisa Luong

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

Malaria is one of the most significant parasitic diseases affecting mankind today, exceeding 200 million annual cases worldwide1. This disease has been a serious issue due to developed resistance to commonly available antimalarial drugs including atovaquone and artemisinin2, the most relevant modern treatment (figure 1.1). This project focuses on the preparation of 1,2,3,4- tetrahydroacridones (figure 1.2) that can be tested for their activity against P. falciparum isolates TM90-C2B (an atovaquone-resistant parasitic strain) and W2 (an atovaquone-susceptible parasite). In the past, studies have shown that endochins (4(1H)-quinolones) 3 and acridines (figure 1.1) have been found to exhibit antimalarial activity4. The research …

Coupling Sediment Transport And Water Quality Models, Yi Xiong Dec 2010

Coupling Sediment Transport And Water Quality Models, Yi Xiong

Theses and Dissertations

Sediment has profound effects on water quality. Correspondingly, water quality modeling often needs sediment transport modeling. However, simplified descriptive sediment transport was originally employed for water quality modeling, and the linkage between sediment transport models and water quality models is less developed. Therefore, the main purposes of this study were to develop general methods of coupling sediment transport and water quality models and to improve sediment transport modeling for water quality modeling. Linkage of sediment transport and water quality was discussed and a comprehensive sediment transport literature review was conducted. SEDDEER (Sediment Deposition and Erosion), a stand-alone sediment and contaminant …

Clarifying The Effects Of Neighborhood Context On Violence “Behind Closed Doors”, Emily M. Wright, Michael L. Benson Dec 2010

Clarifying The Effects Of Neighborhood Context On Violence “Behind Closed Doors”, Emily M. Wright, Michael L. Benson

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Research on neighborhood-level effects on intimate partner violence (IPV) has expanded significantly in the past two decades. However, to date, studies have been unable to disentangle compositional and contextual effects on IPV and have rarely considered the social mechanisms that might link neighborhood conditions to IPV. Using data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods, this study considers individual and contextual influences on violence between partners, and examines the effects of disadvantage and collective efficacy on this type of behavior. Results indicate that neighborhood disadvantage significantly increases and collective efficacy significantly decreases IPV after controlling for individual-level correlates. …

A Comparative Study Of Embedded And Anesthetized Zebrafish In Vivo On Myocardiac Calcium Oscillation And Heart Muscle Contraction, Brian S. Muntean, Christine M. Horvat, James H. Behler, Wissam A. Aboualaiwi, Andromeda M. Nauli, Frederick E. Williams, Surya M. Nauli Dec 2010

A Comparative Study Of Embedded And Anesthetized Zebrafish In Vivo On Myocardiac Calcium Oscillation And Heart Muscle Contraction, Brian S. Muntean, Christine M. Horvat, James H. Behler, Wissam A. Aboualaiwi, Andromeda M. Nauli, Frederick E. Williams, Surya M. Nauli

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has been used as a model for studying vertebrate development in the cardiovascular system. In order to monitor heart contraction and cytosolic calcium oscillations, fish were either embedded in methylcellulose or anesthetized with tricaine. Using high-resolution differential interference contrast and calcium imaging microscopy, we here show that dopamine and verapamil alter calcium signaling and muscle contraction in anesthetized zebrafish, but not in embedded zebrafish. In anesthetized fish, dopamine increases the amplitude of cytosolic calcium oscillation with a subsequent increase in heart contraction, whereas verapamil decreases the frequency of calcium oscillation and heart rate. Interestingly, verapamil also …

Performance Of Neonatal Holstein Heifers Fed Yeast Derivatives In Milk Replacer, Jessica Martin Graves Dec 2010

Performance Of Neonatal Holstein Heifers Fed Yeast Derivatives In Milk Replacer, Jessica Martin Graves

Theses and Dissertations

Objectives of the present study were to evaluate neonatal Holstein heifer performance while supplemented with coccidiostat (CX), yeast (YST), β-glucan or some combination of these products in non-medicated milk replacer. Efficacy of these products on E. coli and coccidia shedding was also observed. No differences (P > 0.05) were observed among treatment groups with respect to performance data collected which included growth, feed intake and efficiency, fecal and respiratory and blood parameters. Heifers fed YST or YST + β-glucan had higher (P = 0.02 and P < 0.01, respectively) fecal E. coli concentrations compared to heifers fed CX, CX + YST, or β-glucan. No heifers showed clinical signs of coccidiosis and appeared to be healthy. These results suggest neonatal heifers may be supplemented with yeast derivatives without negative effects on growth or health performance.

Political Ideology And Ideological (Re)Alignment 1972-2006, Derrick Ryan Shapley Dec 2010

Political Ideology And Ideological (Re)Alignment 1972-2006, Derrick Ryan Shapley

Theses and Dissertations

This study tests the relationship of the 6 ideological variables and 7 contextual variables to shifts in ideological alignment through a latent class regression analysis for three periods of years (1972-1978, 1980-1992, 1993-2006). The latent class regression models determine the number of identifiable classes for each model. Using ideological realignment theory (Abramowitz and Saunders 1998) this study finds there has been a moderate polarization of opinions that has occurred, as well as, a moderate hardening of ideological beliefs with moral issues during the third time period becoming the driving force in ideological makeup. With regard to the culture wars hypothesis …

Detection And Characterization Of A Volatile Compound As A Response To Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera Frugiperda) Feeding In Maize (Zea Mays), Whitney Elizabeth Crow Smith Dec 2010

Detection And Characterization Of A Volatile Compound As A Response To Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera Frugiperda) Feeding In Maize (Zea Mays), Whitney Elizabeth Crow Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Maize (Zea mays) is an important agricultural crop frequently targeted by pests that pose a threat to plant development and survival. To deal with this problem, maize generates a wide variety of responses to attack by pests, from activation of woundresponse pathways to the release of volatile compounds. Several maize lines have been developed that show resistance to one common pest, the larvae of the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda). Analysis of the volatiles released by the resistant and susceptible lines in the presence and absence of the fall armyworm was conducted using SPME coupled to GC/MS. Caryophyllene, a commonly released …

Investigating The Impact Of Process Complexity On Quality Of Care In Hospital Emergency Departments, Laura Carolyn Ruff

Theses and Dissertations

This research examined the impact of ED process complexity on hospital quality outcomes. Nine emergency department nurse managers from hospitals in Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana were interviewed regarding processes of registration, laboratory testing, medication administration, radiology, and discharge. Interview data was coded according to variables in proposed equations for patientocused, providerocused, and overall process complexity. Hospital quality was measured using existing process of care, outcome of care, and patient satisfaction standards. Results showed a strong negative correlation between process complexity and overall quality, suggesting that hospitals with lower process complexity experience higher quality outcomes. Regression analysis showed that the average …

Integrating Project Change Management Learning Into An Academic Course On It Project Management, Mikaela A. Nweke Ms. Dec 2010

Integrating Project Change Management Learning Into An Academic Course On It Project Management, Mikaela A. Nweke Ms.

Purdue Polytechnic Directed Projects

Within project management, little attention has been devoted to controlling and facilitating changes when constraints of a project have been changed such as scope, time, cost, or quality, also known as Project Change Management (Arami, 2008). Growing statistics prove it is imperative for students finishing IT programs to acquire an understanding of project change management (PCM) for industry preparation. The U.S. spent 3.28 billion dollars on global change management and accountability projects for technology (roughly one-third of the total budget for global change) in the year 2000; this percentage still continues to rise (Goncalves, 2007). As a result, students must …

First Order Analysis Of Nitrate Loading In The Upper Elbe River Basin, Czech Republic, Daniel J. Ritter Dec 2010

First Order Analysis Of Nitrate Loading In The Upper Elbe River Basin, Czech Republic, Daniel J. Ritter

Theses and Dissertations

Nitrate contamination of water is a worldwide issue. Nitrate is especially dangerous for young children, and may result in potentially fatal blue baby syndrome when concentration in drinking water is > 10 mg/L N-NO3. Nitrate in surface water may also lead to eutrophication. Sources of NO3- contamination include nitrate fertilizers, wastewater treatment plants, individual domestic septic systems, runoff from animal feedlots, and natural soil nitrogen. Nitrate contamination in the Elbe River drainage, covering 148,270 km2 in Germany and the Czech Republic, has been a long-term issue. This study examines the upper one-third of the basin, located almost entirely in the Czech …

4-D Modeling Of Displacement Vector Fields For Improved Radiation Therapy, Elizabeth Zachariah Dec 2010

4-D Modeling Of Displacement Vector Fields For Improved Radiation Therapy, Elizabeth Zachariah

Theses and Dissertations

In radiation therapy, it is imperative to deliver high doses of radiation to the tumor while reducing radiation to the healthy tissue. Respiratory motion is the most significant source of errors during treatment. Therefore, it is essential to accurately model respiratory motion for precise and effective radiation delivery. Many approaches exist to account for respiratory motion, such as controlled breath hold and respiratory gating, and they have been relatively successful. They still present many drawbacks. Thus, research has been expanded to tumor tracking. This paper presents a spatio-temporal model for four dimensional CT reconstruction. The method begins with a set …
