Comparing Detection Methods Of Aflatoxin And Exploring Aflatoxin Decontamination Methods, Rebecca Burgett Singleterry Dec 2010

Comparing Detection Methods Of Aflatoxin And Exploring Aflatoxin Decontamination Methods, Rebecca Burgett Singleterry

Theses and Dissertations

Ethanol fermentation of highly concentrated aflatoxin-contaminated corn (Zea mays) was conducted on a lab scale to determine if aflatoxin concentrated in the distilled ethanol and/or dry distillers grain end-products. Alliquots of fermented mash, distilled ethanol, stillage, and dry distillers grain (DDG) were analyzed via LC-MS/MS and immunoassay detection methods for aflatoxin. Results indicate that aflatoxin does not greatly concentrate during fermentation in the DDGs and is undetectable in distilled ethanol. Addition of binders, MTB-100®, to aflatoxin-contaminated DDGs showed great reduction in aflatoxin concentrations when analyzed via LC-MS/MS. Also, an experiment investigating detoxification of aflatoxin using Clorox® was conducted. Results obtained …

Effects Of Repeated Prescribed Fires On Upland Oak Forest Ecosystem In The Missouri Ozarks, Zhongqiu Ma Dec 2010

Effects Of Repeated Prescribed Fires On Upland Oak Forest Ecosystem In The Missouri Ozarks, Zhongqiu Ma

Theses and Dissertations

In this research, the fire effects on structural and compositional change, and advance regeneration of oak forests in the Ozarks of Missouri were investigated by combining the statistic methods of MANONA, survival analysis, CART analysis, and logistic analysis. Results indicated that fire treatments significantly reduced the midsotry and understory basal area and stem density. However, fire effects on overstory tree survival differentiated among size classes. A new morphological variable, ratio of the total height to the square of basal diameter, was found to be statistically significantly related to the tree mortality rate for most of the species. The developed logistic …

Innate Immunity And Inflammation In Sepsis In A Mouse Model For Binge Drinking, Basit Latief Jan Dec 2010

Innate Immunity And Inflammation In Sepsis In A Mouse Model For Binge Drinking, Basit Latief Jan

Theses and Dissertations

Alcohol consumption is a significant riskactor for mortality in patients with sepsis. This study was carried to investigate the mechanisms by which acute ethanol exposure alters the course of sepsis and the effect of TLR4 signaling. Ethanol administration decreases resistance to E. coli and causes decrease in the ability to clear bacteria both from the peritoneal-cavity as well as the spleen. At early time-points, ethanol also suppresses the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. TLR4 is dispensable for survival in E. coli sepsis but it also contributes to lethality in wild-type mice. Although TLRs have been implicated as an important element of …

Kindergarten Through Third Grade Reading Tutors In Northeast Mississippi, Angela Williams Dec 2010

Kindergarten Through Third Grade Reading Tutors In Northeast Mississippi, Angela Williams

Theses and Dissertations

All public schools in the United States have been caught up in educational reform. This has especially been true since the 1980’s. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 was a major component in how schools have changed the process of educating students. In response to reform efforts, many schools have relied on their own knowledge to achieve higher test scores. In the last several years, accountability standards have been increasing. Schools are being assessed according to national standards. Because of this, many schools are using different methods of instruction for students at-risk of failing. One method of instruction …

Occurrence And Transformation Of Pharmaceutical And Antibacterial Compounds In The Environment, Kusum Santosh Verma

Theses and Dissertations

The presence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the environment has become a matter of concern during the last decade. Increased production of PPCPs along with their increased use has led to release of these compounds in the environment via various routes. PPCPs includes large group of compounds including veterinary and human antibiotics, analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs, psychiatric drugs, β-blockers, X-ray contrasts, and steroid hormones, etc. Many of the compounds used in PPCPs have been shown to possess adverse effects to living organisms and act as endocrine disrupting agents (ECDs). This dissertation includes the investigation of the occurrence …

Poplar Interactions With Zinc For Use In Bioremediation And Monitoring, Joshua Pope Adams Dec 2010

Poplar Interactions With Zinc For Use In Bioremediation And Monitoring, Joshua Pope Adams

Theses and Dissertations

Plant mechanisms regulating environmental heavy metal interactions are vital for plant survival. Plants must maintain adequate metal levels while preventing excesses. Several mechanisms involved in heavy metal uptake and sequestration have been identified and studied in hyperaccumulating plants such as Thlaspi caerulescens. These plants accumulate large quantities of metals, but their use in remediation is limited by their small size. On the other hand, mechanisms in high-biomass, non-hyperaccumulating perennial species such as poplar (Populus spp.) are unknown. The central goal of this project is to delineate specific mechanisms in poplar regulating the heavy metal zinc (Zn) for potential use in …

Theses and Dissertations

The reniform nematode is a major pest affecting common upland cotton in the United States. Management of this pest in cotton fields only gives partial control and is sometimes neither economical nor profitable. Past research has shown no resistance to the reniform nematode in currently available commercial cotton cultivars. Screenings of several currently available cotton cultivars for tolerance to the reniform nematode were conducted in the growing seasons of 2006 and 2007 at the Delta Branch Experiment Station in Stoneville MS. Several cultivars were identified as tolerant and productive including ‘Croplan Genetics 3520 B2RF,’ ‘DynaGrow 2520 B2RF,’ and ‘Stoneville 5242 …

The Conditioning Effects Of Religiosity On The Relationship Between Strain, Negative Emotions, And Delinquency: A Longitudinal Assessment Of General Strain Theory, Christopher W. Purser Dec 2010

The Conditioning Effects Of Religiosity On The Relationship Between Strain, Negative Emotions, And Delinquency: A Longitudinal Assessment Of General Strain Theory, Christopher W. Purser

Theses and Dissertations

Robert Agnew’s (1992) General Strain Theory significantly revitalized traditional scholarship in the anomie/strain tradition by offering a general theory of crime; purported to account for both criminal and analogous behaviors. GST specifically extends anomie/strain theory by introducing new sources of strain (i.e. loss of positively valued stimuli, presentation of noxious stimuli) into the theoretical framework, as well as elucidating the causal pathways (including mediating and moderating effects) leading from the experience of strain to deviant coping mechanisms. An emerging trend within GST is the identification of previously untapped sources of strain (e.g. victimization, discrimination) that ostensibly have deviancegenerating properties. Concerning …

The Effect Of Exogenous Fructose On Creeping Bentgrass Heat Tolerance, William Brett Long Dec 2010

The Effect Of Exogenous Fructose On Creeping Bentgrass Heat Tolerance, William Brett Long

Theses and Dissertations

Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) used on golf course putting greens are some of the most intensively managed areas of turf and are subjected to high stress. Heat stress results in lowered photosynthetic efficiency and inadequate sugar production. An exogenous application of fructose could compensate for the lack of sugar being produced. The objectives of this research were to determine the effect of exogenous applications of fructose on heat stressed creeping bentgrass. Field results showed some phytotoxicity with high rates of fructose, while lower rates showed no visible damage compared to an untreated control. Low rates of surfactant resulted in little …

The Effects Of Four Pre-Emergent Herbicides On The Rooting Architecture Of Hybrid Bermudagrass, Christopher Jerome Nettles Jr. Dec 2010

The Effects Of Four Pre-Emergent Herbicides On The Rooting Architecture Of Hybrid Bermudagrass, Christopher Jerome Nettles Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Weed control is essential in managing high quality turfgrasses. Some preemergent (PRE) herbicides may pose a negative effect on rooting architecture (total length, surface area, diameter, and mass) of desirable species. Several PRE herbicides work by negatively affecting normal cell division and development. Evaluations were performed to determine the effects of four PRE herbicides (dithiopyr, oxadiazon, pendimethalin, and quinclorac) on hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L. X C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy) (BG) root architecture. Herbicide treatments were applied to field grown dormant BG in Mid-March of 2008 and 2009. A decrease in root length, and in surface area, was observed at 8 …

Translational Neuroscience

There is a need for different and better aids to tobacco product use cessation. Useful smoking cessation aids, bupropion (2) and varenicline (3), share some chemical features with 3-phenyltropanes (4), which have promise in cocaine dependence therapy. Here we report studies to generate and characterize pharmacodynamic features of 3-phenyltropane analogues. These studies extend our work on the multiple molecular target model for aids to smoking cessation. We identified several new 3-phenyltropane analogues that are superior to 2 in inhibition of dopamine, norepinephrine, and sometimes serotonin reuptake. All of these ligands also act as inhibitors of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) function …
