The Therapeutic Effect Of Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy On Severe Spasticity Related Spinal Cord Injury: A Casereport, Shin-Yo Lu, Tsui-Fen Yang, Tai-Tong Wong, Rai-Chi Chan, Chung-Yu Ho, Hung-Yi Chang
The Therapeutic Effect Of Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy On Severe Spasticity Related Spinal Cord Injury: A Casereport, Shin-Yo Lu, Tsui-Fen Yang, Tai-Tong Wong, Rai-Chi Chan, Chung-Yu Ho, Hung-Yi Chang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Spasticity refers to a velocity-dependent resistance to passive motion which was characterized as a symptom of upper motor neuron lesion. Though mild spasticity can help patients compensate for muscle weakness which is benefit for transferring and some daily living function, severe spasticity may cause difficulty in positioning, motor performance and predispose to pressure ulcer. The treatment option for spasticity includes physical therapy (positioning, stretching, range of motion exercise), splinting, oral medication (baclofen and diazepam are most commonly used), botulinum toxin or phenal block for focal spasticity, and more invasively, intrathecal baclofen pump (ITB) and selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR). Selective dorsal …

Novel Orthoses For Male Hemiplegic Patients To Perform Clean Intermittent Catheterization: A Casereport, Yu-Lin Tsai, Mao-Hsiung Huang, Chia-Hsin Chen
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
A 37-year-old male suffered from hemorrhagic stroke with left side hemiplegia and neurogenic bladder. On admission, due to post-renal acute renal failure with hydronephrosis, he received indwelling catheterization but felt very uncomfortable. However, he was physically unable to perform clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) due to his hemiplegia. Two novel devices were designed to help him perform CIC using one side of his body. As in our experience with this case, hemiplegic patients may now be able to perform CIC by themselves to achieve adequate bladder drainage using one-sided limbs under the assistance of the novel orthoses.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome As An Initial Presentation Of Glioblastoma Multiforme: A Casereport, Chih-Hung Tseng, Kun-Lin Wu, Sin-Hao Ho, Su-Ju Tsai
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
A 43-year-old woman was clinically diagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome due to the presentation of intermittent numbness, tingling and pain in her right thumb and index finger. The symptoms gradually exacerbated together with positive Phalen's test and Tinel's sign. Endoscopic carpal tunnel release procedure failed to relieve her symptoms. Ensuing symptoms developed such as headache, extensive numbness and mild weakness in her right upper and lower limbs. MRI of brain revealed a left thalamic tumor. Stereotactic biopsy confirmed the pathologic diagnosis as glioblastoma. Post-operative radiotherapy and temozolomide chemotherapy were performed to suppress disease progression. She also received comprehensive rehabilitation program, …

Posterior Interosseous Neuropathy Related To Cumulative Trauma Disorder: A Casereport, Cheng-Hao Tseng, Tsung-Cheng Huang, Jen-Wen Hung, Bin-Chi Chang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Work related cumulative posterior interosseous neuropathy is a rare cumulative trauma disorder. To the best of our knowledge, a locksmith with this kind of disorder has never been reported. The locksmith was a 57-year-old man, and he had to perform repeated supination and pronation movements when working. He complained of weakness of right third and fourth finger extension when typing on a computer keyboard. Radial deviation was also noted when his wrist was extended. Electromyography was performed and right posterior interosseous neuropathy was suspected. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed perineural muscle edema, obliteration and fluid accumulation at the level of …

Multiple Heterotopic Ossifications In A Patient With Traumatic Brain Injury And Femoral Fracture: A Casereport, Chun-Sheng Ho, Chein-Wei Chang, Eou-Ting Hsieh, Jen-Li Pan
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Sporadic heterotopic ossification is a common complication in patients with spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, electrical burns, hip fracture, elbow fracture or total hip arthroplasty. However, multiple heterotopic ossifications in a traumatic brain injury case are quite rare. We report a case of a 23 year-old female patient with traumatic brain injury and a right femoral open fracture due to a traffic accident. She started to develop local erythema, swelling, warmth and pain over the left elbow and right hip about two months after the accident. The range of motion of the affected joints decreased and this severely impeded …

Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma With Neck Pain: A Casereport, Shih-Wei Huang, Nai-Chiung Huang, Ta-Sen Wei, Tsung-Ju Wu
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Papillary thyroid carcinoma is a type of well-differentiated thyroid cancer. This type of cancer is often diagnosed in patients found with palpable neck mass or lymph node enlargement. The clinical characteristics of papillary thyroid carcinoma are slow disease progression, less tendency for distant metastasis, and better prognosis than other types of thyroid cancer. The diagnosis of thyroid cancer is primarily based on the identification of pathological tissue obtained through echo-guide fine needle aspiration biopsy. In laboratory examinations, these patients may or may not be present with hypothyroidism. The subject in our case study is a 82-year-old male patient. He complains of …

Spinal Cord Injury And Diffuse Asymptomatic Pulmonary Embolism After Percutaneous Vertebroplasty: A Casereport, Yao-Jen Chen, Pei-Pi Shih, Su-Ju Tsai
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
A 30-year-old woman with a history of 9th to 11th thoracic vertebral compression fracture developed complete thoracic spinal cord injury immediately after percutaneous vertebroplasty. The patient did not have any sign of neurological recovery after two operations for spinal decompression. The postoperative chest X ray and thoracic computed tomography scan revealed diffuse asymptomatic pulmonary embolism, but the patient did not have dyspnea or chest pain.Percutaneous vertebroplasty has been generally considered a minimally invasive and effective procedure for treatment of painful compression fracture. Complications after percutaneous vertebroplasty include infection, spinal cord injury, cardiopulmonary complications and stroke. In previous literature search, there …

Early-Stage Myeloid Sarcoma Presenting As Back Pain In An Adolescent: A Casereport, Chao-Pin Yang, Shih-Chung Wang, Ta-Sen Wei, Sen-Yung Liu, Tsung-Ju Wu, Albert D. Yang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare disease. MS is a malignant solid tumor resulting from the extramedullary proliferation of myeloblasts or immature myeloid cells. It is often described in association with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In the absence of overt leukemia, MS is rarely considered in the differential diagnosis of a soft-tissue mass, and the diagnosis of MS is usually delayed or misdiagnosed. We present the case of a female adolescent who initially complained of back pain. Conservative treatment including medication and rehabilitation was given to her, but in vain, and the symptoms gradually progressed to severe neurological function loss, including …
Down, But Not Out: An Ethnographic Study Of Women Who Struggled With And Overcame Methamphetamine Addiction, Jodi Nettleton
Down, But Not Out: An Ethnographic Study Of Women Who Struggled With And Overcame Methamphetamine Addiction, Jodi Nettleton
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Women suffer methamphetamine (meth) addiction at a rate much higher than rates for addiction to other drugs. Female meth users are susceptible and predisposed to gender-related risks: high rates of unprotected vaginal and anal sex, sex-work, and sexual coercion. Precursors for addiction (e.g., abuse, body dysphasia) put females in a difficult position for recovery and highlight the need for gender-specific research and treatment.
Methamphetamine (a synthetically derived stimulant) creates psychological and physical dependency that affects every neuron of the brain and damages the body immediately. Women ingest meth for initial effects that allay social pressures: feeling euphoric, connecting with others …

Evaluation Of Common Inherited Variants In Mitochondrial-Related And Microrna-Related Genes As Novel Risk Factors For Ovarian Cancer, Jennifer Permuth Wey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among women in the United States, and the etiology is incompletely understood. Common, low penetrant genetic variants such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) likely contribute to a significant proportion of EOC. We examined whether SNPs in two understudied yet biologically important types of genes, mitochondrial-related and miRNA-related genes, may contribute to EOC susceptibility using data from a large, homogeneous study population of 1,815 EOC cases and 1,900 controls (frequency-matched on age-group and race/ethnicity) genotyped through stage 1 of an ongoing genome-wide association study. Inter-individual variation in genes involved …

Epidemiological Study Of Contributing Factors In The Development Of Peptic Ulcer And Gastric Cancer Initiated By Helicobacter Pylori Infection In India, Rahul Suresh Mhaskar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a significant risk factor for peptic ulcer (PU) and gastric cancer (GC). Apart from the virulent CagA genotype of H. pylori environmental and dietary factors influence disease outcomes. There have been no studies addressing these factors in Western India. Hence, we conducted a case control study enrolling PU, GC patients and controls at Pune, India.
Methods: Risk factors for PU and H. pylori infection were assessed in participant interview. H. pylori status was assessed from stool by monoclonal antigen detection. To understand treatment effect, we followed 100 H. pylori positive patients.
Results: We …
Dna Methylation And Its Association With Prenatal Exposures And Pregnancy Outcomes, Jennifer Straughen
Dna Methylation And Its Association With Prenatal Exposures And Pregnancy Outcomes, Jennifer Straughen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Altered DNA methylation may lead to suboptimal fetal programming, increasing the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes such as small for gestational age (SGA); however, few studies have examined the associations between DNA methylation, prenatal exposures, and fetal outcomes. Cross-sectional data from a larger, ongoing study were used to assess the impact of prenatal smoking on gene specific methylation of umbilical cord blood derived DNA and to investigate the association between gene-specific methylation and risk of SGA. The association between gene-specific DNA methylation and birthweight was also assessed. Maternal and infant covariates were abstracted from medical records, cigarette smoke exposure was …
Discovery Of Novel Viruses From Animals, Plants, And Insect Vectors Using Viral Metagenomics, Terry Fei Fan Ng
Discovery Of Novel Viruses From Animals, Plants, And Insect Vectors Using Viral Metagenomics, Terry Fei Fan Ng
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Understanding emerging viruses is critical for disease monitoring and prediction; however, surveys of novel viruses are hindered by the lack of a universal assay for viruses. Viral metagenomics, consisting of viral particle purification and shotgun sequencing, is a powerful technique for discovering viruses in a wide variety of sample types. However, current protocols are not effective on tissue samples (e.g., lungs, livers and tumors), where they are hindered by the high amount of host nucleic acids which limits the percentage of sequences that originate from viruses. In this dissertation, a modified viral metagenomics protocol was developed and utilized to effectively …
Antecedents And Consequences Of Channel Alienation: An Empirical Investigation Within Franchised Channels Of Distribution, Ivan Lapuka
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Investigating an important overlooked phase of interorganizational relationship evolution, which is currently hypothesized to progress through five stages of awareness, exploration, expansion, commitment, and dissolution, this dissertation proposes that in the long road between commitment and dissolution, the quintessential interfirm relationship is likely to be characterized by aprolonged period of relationship alienation, which then becomes the immediate precursor to the dissolution stage.
The dissertation utilizes social learning theory, behavior constraint theory, and alienation theory to explain apathetic behaviors of franchisees. The principal proposition is that certain characteristics of the franchise system’s operating environment inadvertently condition franchisee estrangement and failure, and …

Dental caries is a highly prevalent disease caused by colonisation of tooth surfaces by cariogenic bacteria, such as Streptococcus sobrinus and Streptococcus salivarius. Reducing initial adherence of such bacteria to teeth may delay onset of caries. Many foods, such as milk, can inhibit microbial adherence. In this investigation, the effect of untreated (UT) and enzyme-treated (ET) dairy powders on adherence of S. sobrinus and S. salivarius to hydroxylapatite (HA), an analogue of tooth enamel, was examined. Untreated (UT) acid whey protein concentrate (AWPC) 80 inhibited streptococcal adherence to phosphate-buffered saline-coated HA (PBS-HA) and saliva-coated HA (S-HA) by >80% at …
