Optimization Of Application Of Delactosed Whey Permeate Treatment To Extend The Shelf-Life Of Fresh Cut Tomato Using Response Surface Methodology., Lubna Ahmed, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, Catherine Barry-Ryan
Articles
Optimization of delactosed whey permeate (DWP) treatment for fresh-cut tomato was accomplished by evaluating different quality, nutritional and microbial markers. Response surface methodology was applied to obtain polynomial model equations. DWP concentration (0 - 5 %) and storage (0 - 10 days) were used as independent factors in order to optimize the process. The analyses showed that increases in DWP concentration extended the quality of the fresh-cut tomato significantly (p3 % were scored unacceptable by the sensory panel due to perceived off-odours. DWP treatment also improved retention of ascorbic acid and lycopene over storage. The total aerobic counts and yeast …

Advocacy For Tenant And Community Empowerment: Reflections On My First Year In Practice, Shekar Krishnan
City University of New York Law Review
In May 2009, the landlord of a rent-stabilized building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn openly declared his intention to force out the current tenants if they did not leave on their own. Located on North 8th Street right off trendy Bedford Avenue, the property was prime real estate in Williamsburg. The only obstacles that stood between the landlord and the potential for him to reap large profits were the rent-stabilized status of the building and all the tenants who paid the regulated rent, a fraction of the market rate. Once he forced those tenants to leave, he could “gut rehab” the apartments, …

My Plan To Play: A Personal Journey Towards A Lifetime Of Play, Aimee Blaquiere
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
In my first Critical and Creative Thinking course, I chose to explore singing and performing meaningful songs with my father as a form of creative thinking. This project led to the realization that, as an adult, I had forgotten what it was like to play. With this acknowledgement, I was prompted to explore underlying reasons for why my capacity to play was blocked in the first place. In doing so, I explored play theories and reflected on my own forms of play, as a basis for understanding how to successfully re-introduce play into my life. Through metacognitive reflection, this synthesis …

Promoting Self-Sufficiency? How Hra's Exclusion Of Incarceration From The Definition Of "Temporary Absence" Contradicts Statutory Mandates And Hurts New York Families, Matthew P. Main
City University of New York Law Review
The New York City Human Resources Administration has implemented a policy that has a punitive and disproportionate impact on poor families of color. The policy departs from the legislative mandate to support New York’s neediest and most at risk by arbitrarily excluding incarceration from the definition of “temporary absence,” as it applies to the Cash Assistance program. Aside from the discriminatory impact on poor children and families, the policy decision comes at a higher cost to New York taxpayers in the midst of a financial crisis. This Comment evaluates the legal flaws in the policy, the persons it targets, the …

Acetate Causes Alcohol Hangover Headache In Rats, Christina R. Maxwell, Rebecca Jay Spangenberg, Jan B. Hoek, Stephen D. Silberstein, Michael L. Oshinsky
Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Background
The mechanism of veisalgia cephalgia or hangover headache is unknown. Despite a lack of mechanistic studies, there are a number of theories positing congeners, dehydration, or the ethanol metabolite acetaldehyde as causes of hangover headache.
Methods
We used a chronic headache model to examine how pure ethanol produces increased sensitivity for nociceptive behaviors in normally hydrated rats.
Results
Ethanol initially decreased sensitivity to mechanical stimuli on the face (analgesia), followed 4 to 6 hours later by inflammatory pain. Inhibiting alcohol dehydrogenase extended the analgesia whereas inhibiting aldehyde dehydrogenase decreased analgesia. Neither treatment had nociceptive effects. Direct administration of acetate …

Chlamydia trachomatis infections cause severe and irreversible damage that can lead to infertility and blindness in both males and females. Following infection of epithelial cells, Chlamydia induces production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Unconventionally, Chlamydiae use ROS to their advantage by activating caspase-1, which contributes to chlamydial growth. NLRX1, a member of the Nod-like receptor family that translocates to the mitochondria, can augment ROS production from the mitochondria following Shigella flexneri infections. However, in general, ROS can also be produced by membrane-bound NADPH oxidases. Given the importance of ROS-induced caspase-1 activation in growth of the chlamydial vacuole, we investigated the …
Universal Design Of Transportation Systems: A Case Study Of Access And Mobility Of People With Disabilities At Selected Intersections In Dar Es Salaam, Nurdin Mushule
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
The pedestrian facilities at intersections must be usable by pedestrians of all ages and capabilities. Intersections in particular must be designed to safely accommodate pedestrians of all ages and physical and mental abilities. Often, however, intersection designs fail to accommodate people with visual and mobility disabilities. In this regard, for pedestrians with disabilities, intersections can prove to be a challenge. Some of those challenges include provision of insufficient pedestrian clearance time due to use of inappropriate design pedestrian speed. Most importantly, the required facilities to enable People With Disabilities (PWD) to use the intersection without hindrance may be missing. Obstacles …

Urban Dietary Heavy Metal Intake From Protein Foods And Vegetables In Dar Es Salaam, F. N. Ngassapa, O. C. Othman, E. Elisante
Tanzania Journal of Science
Contamination of food and food products by heavy metals has made dietary intake as one of the major routes of these harmful elements to human beings. The human dietary intake of heavy metals cadmium, copper, lead and zinc from protein-foods (beans, meat, fish, milk) and green vegetables consumed daily from restaurants and street food-vendor kiosks in Dar es Salaam were determined using the Total Diet Study (TDS) method. The cooked food was bought from the restaurants and street food-vendors at several city locations (i.e. Buguruni, Manzese, Mwenge, Temeke and Ubungo) over several months and analyzed. Heavy metal concentrations were determined …

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
In the buildup to the construction the U.S.-Mexico border fence by the United States Department of Homeland Security (USDHS), much attention was drawn to security, drug enforcement, and immigration issues. However, there was little quantitative analysis regarding which populations were most likely to be affected by the proposed fence. Using a geographic information system, we classified census blocks in Cameron County, Texas into one of two categories: either ‘fence’ or ‘gap’. A total of 14 demographic factors were tested for disparities between those living in gap areas and those living in areas exposed to the fence. Twelve of fourteen factors …

Moyamoya Disease Presenting With Hemichorea: A Casereport, Min-Hsin Lai, Shin-Yo Lu, Pei-Chi Chou, Shin-Tsu Chang, Heng-Yi Chu
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
We report an unusual case of a 13-year-old boy with moyamoya disease whose predominant manifestation was right hemichorea with initial dystonic spasms of the right limbs and face. A diffusion-weighted MR image of the brain in the initial stage showed no infarcted or other parenchymal lesions. However, MR angiography and intracranial angiography showed stenosis of the bilateral internal carotid and middle cerebral artery with prominent basal collaterals, which was compatible with moyamoya disease. Chorea or hemichorea is one of the rarer presenting features of moyamoya disease. Our findings suggest that moyamoya disease should be included in the differential diagnosis of …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Juvenile muscular amyotrophy of distal upper limbs (Hirayama disease) is a rare disease predominantly affecting the anterior horn cells of the cervical cord in young men. It is a kind of cervical myelopathy characterized by insidious onset of unilateral distal dominant upper limbs muscle weakness and atrophy due to anterior cervical cord compression. It is difficult to differentiate this disease from other diseases with similar symptoms such as motor neuron disease. Cervical magnetic resonance (MR) study in flexed position is helpful to confirm the diagnosis. We reported a 21-year-old man who complained of slowly progressed muscle atrophy and weakness of right …

Determinants Of Firm Entries: Empirical Evidence For Slovenia, Dijana Močnik
Economic and Business Review
We empirically investigate the determinants of new firm formations on Slovenian data set for the 6-year period across statistical regions. Analyzed are the relationships of the determinants classified into five groups: demand, unemployment, industrial restructuring, local financial capital, and knowledge concentration. We find a positive and significant impact of GDP p.c., unemployment rate, productivity growth and a negative relationship for employment density. Results show that some regions have significantly worse conditions for start-up firms than others. Practical implications of this study would allow policy makers to better understand the dynamics in new firm formations.
