The use of formalin as a food additive has been prohibited by the ministry of health as stipulated in The Indonesia Ministry of Health Regulations No.722/Menkes/Per/IV/88. However, in recent years the Indonesian authorities have found trace amounts of formalin as a preservative in perishable foods such as fish and shrimp. The aim of this research is to identify the use of formalin in fresh fish and shrimp samples sold in Muara Angke Market as the fresh seafood market in Jakarta. The first step of this research was formalin identification in fish and shrimp samples and continued by quantitative analysis to …

Oracle And Multiple Robustness Properties Of Survey Calibration Estimator In Missing Response Problem, Kwun Chuen Gary Chan Dec 2010

Oracle And Multiple Robustness Properties Of Survey Calibration Estimator In Missing Response Problem, Kwun Chuen Gary Chan

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In the presence of missing response, reweighting the complete case subsample by the inverse of nonmissing probability is both intuitive and easy to implement. However, inverse probability weighting is not efficient in general and is not robust against misspecification of the missing probability model. Calibration was developed by survey statisticians for improving efficiency of inverse probability weighting estimators when population totals of auxiliary variables are known and when inclusion probability is known by design. In missing data problem we can calibrate auxiliary variables in the complete case subsample to the full sample. However, the inclusion probability is unknown in general …

Modification And Improvement Of Empirical Likelihood For Missing Response Problem, Kwun Chuen Gary Chan

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

An empirical likelihood (EL) estimator was proposed by Qin and Zhang (2007) for a missing response problem under a missing at random assumption. They showed by simulation studies that the finite sample performance of EL estimator is better than some existing estimators. However, the empirical likelihood estimator does not have a uniformly smaller asymptotic variance than other estimators in general. We consider several modifications to the empirical likelihood estimator and show that the proposed estimator dominates the empirical likelihood estimator and several other existing estimators in terms of asymptotic efficiencies. The proposed estimator also attains the minimum asymptotic variance among …

Spatial Distribution Of Calcium-Gated Chloride Channels In Olfactory Cilia, Donald A. French, Dorjsuren Badamdorj, Steven J. Kleene Dec 2010

Spatial Distribution Of Calcium-Gated Chloride Channels In Olfactory Cilia, Donald A. French, Dorjsuren Badamdorj, Steven J. Kleene

Mathematical Sciences Faculty Research

Background

In vertebrate olfactory receptor neurons, sensory cilia transduce odor stimuli into changes in neuronal membrane potential. The voltage changes are primarily caused by the sequential openings of two types of channel: a cyclic-nucleotide-gated (CNG) cationic channel and a calcium-gated chloride channel. In frog, the cilia are 25 to 200 µm in length, so the spatial distributions of the channels may be an important determinant of odor sensitivity.

Principal Findings

To determine the spatial distribution of the chloride channels, we recorded from single cilia as calcium was allowed to diffuse down the length of the cilium and activate the channels. …

Majalah Ilmu Kefarmasian

Valproic acid is an anticonvulsant drug that works by increasing the levels of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Determination of valproic acid is quite difficult because it has no chromophore groups in its structure. Aa analytical method using gas chromatography (GC) with flame ionization detector for the determination of valproic acid in human plasma has been developed and optimized. Valproic acid was extracted from plasma by liquid-liquid extraction method using diethyl ether. The optimum analysis conditions for valproic acid in plasma were achieved by regulated gas chromatography injector and detector at a temperature of 250oC and temperature programming with an initial temperature …

Preservd - Privacy Ensured Service Discovery In Mobile Peer-To-Peer Networks, Santhosh Muthyapu, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Mark Linderman

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In mobile peer-to-peer networks, proposed service discovery protocols disregard the exposure of the participating peers' privacy details (privileged information). in these methods, the participating peers must provide their identities during the service discovery process to be authorized to utilize services. However, a peer may not be willing to reveal its privileged information until it identifies the service providing peer. So, these peers face a problem; should the service requesting or the service providing peer reveal the identity first. the protocol presented in [12] solves this problem to some extent and discover the services available in the service requester's vicinity in …

Jack - Height Adjustable Office Desk Mechanism, John Walsh Dec 2010

Jack - Height Adjustable Office Desk Mechanism, John Walsh

Other

This mechanism was developed out of the increasing requirement for individual users to be able to adjust the height of their desk to an ergonomically correct position for their physicality. Sitting at a standard height desk (usually 720-740mm) for long durations has been linked to health problems, including back and posture problems and DVT, for those who fall either side of the average user in terms of anthropometric height range. A typical problem with "systems furniture" which is widely installed in most corporate open-plan offices is that components are "shared" for cost, functionality and aesthetic purposes. Typically, this means that …

Using Phytotechnologies To Remediate Brownfields, Landfills, And Other Urban Areas, Ronald S. Zalesny Jr, Jill A. Zalesny Dec 2010

Using Phytotechnologies To Remediate Brownfields, Landfills, And Other Urban Areas, Ronald S. Zalesny Jr, Jill A. Zalesny

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urban areas requiring remedial work has prompted the use of phytotechnologies to improve water quality, soil health, and biodiversity, as well as to achieve sustainable social and economic goals. Phytotechnologies directly use plants to clean up contaminated groundwater, soil, and sediment. While woody and herbaceous crops are candidates for such remediation systems, trees within the genera Populus (poplars, cottonwoods, aspens) and Salix (willows) are ideal given their fast growth, extensive root systems, and elevated rates of photosynthesis and transpiration. The genetic diversity within these genera substantially increases the establishment and growth potential across heterogeneous sites. We have tested these trees …

Human Health & Well-Being: Evidence For An Expanded Framework Of Ecosystem Services In Cities, Kathleen L. Wolf

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Scientific research across recent decades has provided evidence of the broad array of benefits provided by urban greening. "Ecosystem services" is a concept that provides a framework for understanding and strategically generating nature based functions and benefits. Several classifications of ecosystem services have been proposed (including the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, 2005). Within the urban context, environmental benefits and services are becoming better understood and more recognized. Unfortunately, human health and well being (HHWB) benefits are often reduced to a simple matter of aesthetics in public dialog. A comprehensive research literature review and summary is being prepared to serve as a …

This study captured the container trees planted by In house staff, volunteer groups, and contractors.

What Is Urban Environmental Stewardship? Working Toward A Practitioner-Derived Definition In Seattle, Michele Romolini, Weston Brinkley, Kathleen Wolf Dec 2010

What Is Urban Environmental Stewardship? Working Toward A Practitioner-Derived Definition In Seattle, Michele Romolini, Weston Brinkley, Kathleen Wolf

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

While “stewardship” is often used to describe environmental improvement efforts, it is difficult to find an agreed upon definition of the term. Current research examines stewardship programs, activities, networks, and outcomes. A comprehensive definition should take into account the perspectives of all stakeholders. Practitioners and project managers have particularly direct experiences of stewardship, however little has been done to determine how they define the term and its implementation. Establishing a shared concept of stewardship is essential to further research, and the intent of this preliminary study is to begin to develop a definition. Researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with representatives of …

Community Gardens: An Exploration Of Urban Agriculture In The Bronx, New York City, Michelle Ma Ottmann, Juliana A. Maantay, Kristen Grady, Nerio A. Cardoso, Nilce N. Fonte Dec 2010

Community Gardens: An Exploration Of Urban Agriculture In The Bronx, New York City, Michelle Ma Ottmann, Juliana A. Maantay, Kristen Grady, Nerio A. Cardoso, Nilce N. Fonte

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urban agriculture/community gardening in the Bronx has multiple roles, including health-promoting, economic, environmental, and cultural. These roles are particularly important in light of urban sustainability issues and environmental justice concerns, such as differential access to open space, recreation, and fresh produce in poorer communities and communities of color, as well as differential environmental and health impacts of unsustainable practices on these communities. The gardens generally help promote a sense of place - a focus for communities - which often have little access to safe parks or recreational space within their neighborhoods, and create a center for community cultural and educational …

A Multicriteria Based Quantitative Framework For Assessing Sustainability Of Pile Foundations, Aditi Misra Dec 2010

A Multicriteria Based Quantitative Framework For Assessing Sustainability Of Pile Foundations, Aditi Misra

Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

Civil Engineering is the major instrument of anthropocentric development over centuries through ever expanding infrastructure, cities and facilities.  Civil engineering processes are both resource and fuel intensive.  The building industry alone, during the construction stage, uses about 30-40% of the total resources used in the industrialized countries.  There is a growing consensus that delivering a sustainable built environment starts with incorporating sustainability thoughts at the planning and design stages of a project.  Geotechnical engineering is most resource intensive although this intensive consumption of energy goes unnoticed mainly because of the indirect nature of the energy used in the …
