Evaluation Of Be Wise About Your Portion Size: A Nutrition Education Program For Floridians, Andrea C. Goosen, Laura K. Guyer, Linda B. Bobroff
Florida Public Health Review
In the U.S., obesity is recognized as a growing epidemic whose increased prevalence among adults, children and adolescents present major health concerns. It is the second leading cause of preventable death, surpassed only by tobacco use. Research indicates that controlling the portion sizes of food is an effective way to lose and maintain weight loss. The nutrition education program, “Be Wise about Your Portion Size (BWPS),” was developed in 2005 by the Florida Interagency Food and Nutrition Committee (FIFNC) to support the efforts of community-based nutrition educators. The resource manual provides background information about obesity, consumer handouts, and lesson plans …

The Function Of Narrative In Leadership: Theoretical Foundations And Empirical Evidence, Michael S. Carriger
The Function Of Narrative In Leadership: Theoretical Foundations And Empirical Evidence, Michael S. Carriger
WCBT Faculty Publications
This research is focused on the differential impacts of narrative and facts and figures on the understanding of corporate strategy or competitive advantage. In this way a theoretical (philosophical) foundation can be laid for narrative and the understanding of corporate strategy. Additionally, much needed theoretically sound, empirical validation can be offered for the use of narrative and storytelling by leaders within organizations as a means of creating, disseminating, and executing strategy. Employing a model derived from the tension between modern and post-modern thinking about the nature of ideas and concepts a conceptual framework is offered to try to explain the possible …
Development Of An Accreditation Assessment Survey Using The Higher Learning Commission's Five Criteria For Accreditation Of Higher Education Institutions, Michael David Miles
Development Of An Accreditation Assessment Survey Using The Higher Learning Commission's Five Criteria For Accreditation Of Higher Education Institutions, Michael David Miles
Student Theses and Dissertations
Every institution of higher education in the United States must, in order to award degrees and financial aid, be recognized by an accrediting organization under the guidelines and oversight of the US Department of Education. This process of recognition is known as accreditation. The current procedure of accreditation involves revisits every ten years. This ten-year methodology was recently under review by the Higher Learning Commission and changes were made which resulted in the abbreviation of this time span. Both the general idea of accreditation and the immediacy of the timeline for revisits hold great importance for institutions of higher education. …
The Efficacy Of A Supplementary Literacy Program For Kindergarten Children With Language Impairment, Amy E. Mckinney
The Efficacy Of A Supplementary Literacy Program For Kindergarten Children With Language Impairment, Amy E. Mckinney
Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of a supplemental literacy program for children with language impairment. Ten kindergarten children that qualified for language therapy at a kindergarten center were divided into treatment and non-treatment groups. Children in the treatment group participated in 10 minutes of supplemental literacy instruction at the end of each language intervention session. The non-treatment group received language therapy without the supplemental literacy intervention. Mid-term scores indicated a significant between group difference in letter-sound correspondence, but not in word decoding and sight word recognition for children in the treatment condition. Twelve week post …
Performance Of High Biomass Sorghum And Nitrogen Dynamics By The Application Of Urea, Pelleted Poultry Litter, And Class A Municipal Biosolids, Rakesh Awale
Student Theses and Dissertations
Increasing concern over the depleting fossil fuels and rising costs of chemical fertilizers have stimulated the need to find alternative crop biomass production through regionally available fertilizer sources. A field experiment was conducted to determine high biomass sorghum [(Sorghum bicolor (Moench) L.) dry matter yield, and N uptake due to application of urea, pelleted poultry litter, and class A municipal biosolids in two cropping systems of biomass sorghum and nitrogen use efficiencies of these three nutrient sources in northeast Arkansas in 2009. While urea, pelleted poultry litter, and class A municipal biosolids produced average high biomass sorghum dry matter yield …
The Effects Of Age And Heterochromatin On Frequencies Of Acquired Chromosomal Aneuploidy In Uncultured Human Leukocytes, Noran Aboalela
The Effects Of Age And Heterochromatin On Frequencies Of Acquired Chromosomal Aneuploidy In Uncultured Human Leukocytes, Noran Aboalela
Theses and Dissertations
While age-related sex chromosomal aneuploidy is a well-characterized phenomenon, the relationship between autosomal loss and age remains unclear. The emergence of the specific and highly sensitive fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technology has enabled investigators to study interphase cells, thereby overcoming problems inherent with the study of metaphase spreads for acquired aneuploidy assessment. Despite all the advantages of this technique, there are some limitations that could be misleading when scoring interphase autosomal aneuploidy. In this study we show that sex chromosomal hypoploidy is correlated with age. By using a twin study design, we evaluated Y chromosome hypoploidy frequencies and found …

Translating Hemoglobin A1c Scores Across An Ethnically Diverse Population: Is The Language Consistent Across All Races?, Corliss M. Allen, Eartha S. Butler, Joseph Negusei, Celeste Hart, Ivette A. López, Cynthia M. Harris, Penny Ralston
Florida Public Health Review
Hemoglobin A1c testing is an accepted measure of how well the blood glucose level has been controlled in the recent past (six to eight weeks) among individuals with diabetes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and blood glucose in an ethnically diverse population in a clinical setting. A cross-sectional research design was employed to explore associations between these two diabetes control measures in a sample of African American, White and Hispanic patients receiving diabetes treatment and follow-up in an outpatient clinic in Tallahassee, Florida. Data collection included a questionnaire, medical examinations, and …
The Nature And Intersection Of Partisanship And Ideology, Charles Jolm Manter
The Nature And Intersection Of Partisanship And Ideology, Charles Jolm Manter
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
My first encounter of the political kind occurred in 1992, when a kindergarten classmate asked me who my parents voted for. Based on some dinner conversations, which went mostly over my head, I knew they voted for Bill Clinton. He told me his parents voted for Bush. At that time, a "party" was something associated only with birthdays and I was unaware of the existence of the word "ideology." I understood, however, that politics entails conflict. His parents voted for someone different than my parents voted for: his parents lost and my parents won. Over the next several years, my …

Gender Differences In Resilience In The Emerging Adulthood Population, Erin Bezek
Gender Differences In Resilience In The Emerging Adulthood Population, Erin Bezek
Theses
Risk factors and protective factors influence an individual's resilience. For this study archival data collected from Rochester Institute of Technology college students were used. Specifically the participants' responses on the 16PF- Adolescent Personality Questionnaire (APQ) Life Difficulties Scale (LDS) were analyzed. After reconfiguring the Life Difficulties Scale using the literature review to analyze the items, results indicated that specific items can be considered risk factors, whereas others can be considered protective factors. Results from this emerging adulthood population did not indicate gender differences in the risk and protective factors.

Petals: Proteomic Evaluation And Topological Analysis Of A Mutated Locus' Signaling, Gurkan Bebek, Vishal Patel, Mark R. Chance
Faculty Scholarship
Background: Colon cancer is driven by mutations in a number of genes, the most notorious of which is Apc. Though much of Apc's signaling has been mechanistically identified over the years, it is not always clear which functions or interactions are operative in a particular tumor. This is confounded by the presence of mutations in a number of other putative cancer driver (CAN) genes, which often synergize with mutations in Apc.Computational methods are, thus, required to predict which pathways are likely to be operative when a particular mutation in Apc is observed. Results: We developed a pipeline, PETALS, to predict and …

Introduction: Patients will typically undergo awake surgery for permanent implantation of SCS in an attempt to optimize electrode placement using patient feedback about the distribution of stimulation-induced paresthesia. The present study compared efficacy of first-time electrode placement under awake conditions with that of neurophysiologically-guided placement under general anesthesia.
Methods: A retrospective review was performed of 387 SCS surgeries among 259 patients which included 167 new stimulator implantation to determine whether first time awake surgery for placement of spinal cord stimulators is preferable to non-awake placement.
Results: The incidence of device failure for patients implanted using neurophysiologically-guided placement under general anesthesia …
