International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

PURPOSE:

It has been evident that on average college students experienced excess weight gain as they transited from high school. The objectives of this study were to qualitatively explore college students’ perceived barriers and facilitators to maintaining a healthy bodyweight and identify the key modifiable factors underlying unhealthy behaviors.

METHOD:

The study employed photovoice (PV), a qualitative research method, in undergraduate students in South Texas. Participants took pictures and wrote descriptions of three perceived barriers and three facilitators to maintaining a healthy body weight; they were then asked to choose one of each for discussion. Eight focus groups were conducted …

Improving Secondary Stroke Prevention Among Underserved African Americans: Moving Beyond Health Attitudes, Chelsea Gilts, Lisa Hughes, Gina Evans Hudnall

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Obesity, a known risk factors for stroke, poses a great health risk for the African American community. Beliefs about health locus of control (HLOC) are predictive of many health behaviors related to both obesity and stroke prevention. Some have recommended targeting health interventions to individuals with internal HLOC, as they tend to be more amenable to changing health behaviors, but this can be exclusionary to African Americans, who tend to have higher levels of external locus of control. The present study is a pretest-posttest randomized control design examining the impact of a brief, CBT-based health management intervention developed for overweight …

The Ingredients Of Change: A Political Ecology Approach To Diabetes In The Somali Community Of Minnesota, Mina Tehrani Dec 2010

The Ingredients Of Change: A Political Ecology Approach To Diabetes In The Somali Community Of Minnesota, Mina Tehrani

Geography Capstone Projects

In the early 1990’s, due to political circumstances at home, Somali immigrants and refugees began arriving in the state of Minnesota in large numbers. Over the past two decades, Somali immigrants have come to comprise one of the most populous ethnic groups in the Twin Cities, and are the largest Somali population in the world outside of Eastern Africa. Although quantitative data is unavailable, qualitative evidence and testimonies of healthcare professionals support the conclusion that Somali immigrants in Minnesota suffer from higher rates of diabetes than non-immigrant groups and than they likely did before migration. Why might this be the …

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease In Neonates And Infants: A Systematic Review To Identify Best Practice For Treatment, Kristen M. Mckinnon

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Many infants have some form of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) characterized by occasional spitting up with burps. Symptomatic reflux called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects infants and causes a variety of symptoms and observable events. The diagnosis of GER or GERD appears to be increasing in the infant population including healthy newborns and those infants hospitalized for a variety of reasons. The purpose of this systematic review is to identify evidence-based practice guidelines for the treatment of GERD, including pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions in the neonatal/infant population. The results of this study show that conservative therapies should be used initially in …

Patterns Of Social Activity Engagement Among Older Hispanics And Their Relationship To Sociodemographic And Health Variables, Marta B. Rodríguez-Galán, Luis M. Falcón Dec 2010

Patterns Of Social Activity Engagement Among Older Hispanics And Their Relationship To Sociodemographic And Health Variables, Marta B. Rodríguez-Galán, Luis M. Falcón

Sociology Faculty/Staff Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine patterns of social activity engagement in a sample of older Hispanics (Puerto Rican, Dominican, and other Hispanic) and determine whether these patterns differed significantly from the comparison non-Hispanic White group. This article also analyzes how ethnicity, sociodemographic, and health variables (health problems and depression) relate to each of the activity engagement patterns. The factor analysis of social activities from the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire yielded three factors, which describe engagement in social activities as: children and relatives active, friends and activities active, and senior services active. The results from the regression analyses …

Healthcare Reform And Medical Data Security And Privacy, Patricia Mactaggart, Stephanie Fiore Dec 2010

Healthcare Reform And Medical Data Security And Privacy, Patricia Mactaggart, Stephanie Fiore

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

U.S. health care delivery and administration have undergone transformations that create an expansive demand for health information technology. The concepts put forth in health care reform are reliant on an evolving health information technology infrastructure and the successes of both are dependent on consumer/patient "trust". Every action is interdependent. Each decision is a balance between ease of use, privacy and security concerns of consumers/patients, practicality, costs and political will. The goal is finding the best balance within an appropriate legal framework at the state and federal level so the pieces fit into one complete picture when implemented.

Lawrence Marsh, Charles Glabe

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Age-related neurodegenerative diseases share a number of important pathological features, such as accumulation of misfolded proteins as amyloid oligomers and fibrils. Recent evidence suggests that soluble amyloid oligomers and not the insoluble amyloid fibrils may represent the primary pathological species of protein aggregates.

RESULTS: We have produced several monoclonal antibodies that specifically recognize prefibrillar oligomers and do not recognize amyloid fibrils, monomer or natively folded proteins. Like the polyclonal antisera, the individual monoclonals recognize generic epitopes that do not depend on a specific linear amino acid sequence, but they display distinct preferences for different subsets of prefibrillar oligomers. Immunological …

Making Business Process Reengineering (Bpr) Programmes Work: Case Of Kamal Steel Company, George S. Mwaluko Dec 2010

Making Business Process Reengineering (Bpr) Programmes Work: Case Of Kamal Steel Company, George S. Mwaluko

Business Management Review

It has been shown that improvement in sales revenue obtained through the implementation of Business Process Reengineering (BPR) programmes is ten times the improvement realised through the implementation of Total Quality Management programmes. However, the failure rate of BPR programmes has been shown to be high, about 70%. Most writers have confined themselves to identifying the causes of the failure of BPR programmes. The author argues that the high failure rate of BPR programmes is caused by the fact that the development of their implementation frameworks is not based on the causes of failure of BPR programmes. In this paper …

Commodity Trade Potential In Tanzania: What Went Wrong With The Mineral Sector?, Petro Sauti Magai Dec 2010

Commodity Trade Potential In Tanzania: What Went Wrong With The Mineral Sector?, Petro Sauti Magai

Business Management Review

This paper analyses the facts causing the mineral sector to make less of a contribution to the country ' s economy. Although the sector accounts for nearly half of the country ' s exports, ordinary Tanzanians are not benefiting from this because the government has implemented tax laws that overly favour multinational mining companies. Companies claim to make loss and so avoid paying taxes although they still invest in the country The system is also perceived to be lacking transparency. It is argued that the combined loss to the country is a result of low royalty rates, unpaid corporation taxes …

Determination Of Level Of Imports In The Construction Industry In Tanzania, Robert Suphian Dec 2010

Determination Of Level Of Imports In The Construction Industry In Tanzania, Robert Suphian

Business Management Review

The construction industry has to be competitive and be able to undertake most of the construction projects in Tanzania and export its services and product according to the Tanzania construction policy. This is contrary to the fact that the industry is dominated by Foreign Service providers to the tune of approximately 70 percent in terms of market share. This study employed an econometric model estimation to answer the question of what determined import for construction services in Tanzania for the period 1985-2008. The Ordinary Least Square technique was adopted and applied for regression analysis using Stata 10 software. The findings …
