Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Purpose:

Recent reports of medical errors in radiaKon treatment delivery have emphasized the importance of quality assurance (QA) pracKces. Strict guidelines exist for medical physics QA, but not for QA procedures as applied to clinicians. We sought to document how clinical quality assurance (QA) meeKngs or “chart rounds” are performed across academic North American RadiaKon Oncology departments.

3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is an illicit psychoactive drug with cardiovascular effects that have not been fully described. In the current study, we observed the effects of acute MDMA on rabbit left ventricular function. We also observed the effects of MDMA on nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B) activity in cultured rat ventricular myocytes (H9c2). In the rabbit, MDMA (2 mg/kg) alone caused a significant increase in heart rate and a significant decrease in the duration of the cardiac cycle. Inhibition of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) by pretreatment with L-NAME (10 mg/kg) alone caused significant dysfunction in heart rate, systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, …

Intimidation And Disruptive Behaviors In The Health Care Setting, Janelle Wade Nov 2010

Intimidation And Disruptive Behaviors In The Health Care Setting, Janelle Wade

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Intimidation and disruptive behavior can undermine patient care and cause staff dissatisfaction and turnover of professionals in the health care setting. These behaviors have been linked to patient safety issues, nurse satisfaction, nurse retention, as well as ineffective communication and collaboration (Fontaine & Gerardi, 2005; Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), 2004; Martin, 2008; Rosenstein & O'Daniel, 2005). The Joint Commission has made recommendations to reduce the incidence of disruptive behaviors. Hospitals are being asked to take responsibility, hold physicians accountable for their actions, and address workplace intimidation (ISMP, 2004; Rosenstein & O'Daniel, 2005; The Joint Commission, July 2008). The …

When Your Body Is Your Business, Morgan Holcomb, Mary Patricia Byrn Nov 2010

When Your Body Is Your Business, Morgan Holcomb, Mary Patricia Byrn

Washington Law Review

Surrogacy in the United States is a multi-million dollar industry in which well paid professionals seek out specially qualified women to fill the difficult job of being a surrogate. Surrogates enter lengthy contracts in which they agree, in intricate and intimate detail, to provide a service for significant compensation—as a group, surrogates in the United States are paid well over $22 million per year. This Article argues that surrogates are professionals in this for-profit industry and are required to report surrogacy compensation as income. As a corollary, surrogates may deduct most of their surrogacy-related expenses as business deductions. Being a …

Grown Up Congenital Heart Disease Patient Presenting For Non Cardiac Surgery: Anaesthetic Implications, Mohammad Hamid, Mansoor Ahmed Khan, Mohammad Irfan Akhtar, Hameedullah, Saleemullah, Khalid Samad, Fazal Hameed Khan

Department of Anaesthesia

Congenital heart disease patients surviving to adulthood have increased over the years due to various reasons. These patients are admitted in the hospital for non cardiac surgeries and other procedures more often than normal adult population. Management of grown up congenital heart disease patient presents a challenge during perioperative period for cardiologists, surgeons, intensivists and particularly for the anaesthetist. Management issues include psychological and physiological impact on the patient, complexity of defects, presence of previous palliative procedure, impact of anaesthetic agents on shunting and myocardium, endocarditis prophylaxis and associated extra cardiac anamolies.

Should We Be Concerned About Jejunoileal Atresia During Repair Of Duodenal Atresia?, Shawn D. St Peter, Danny C. Little, Katherine A. Barsness, Daniel R. Copeland, Casey M. Calkins, Suzanne Yoder, Steve S. Rothenberg, Saleem Islam, Kuojen Tsao, Daniel J. Ostlie Nov 2010

Should We Be Concerned About Jejunoileal Atresia During Repair Of Duodenal Atresia?, Shawn D. St Peter, Danny C. Little, Katherine A. Barsness, Daniel R. Copeland, Casey M. Calkins, Suzanne Yoder, Steve S. Rothenberg, Saleem Islam, Kuojen Tsao, Daniel J. Ostlie

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

INTRODUCTION: During repair for duodenal atresia, it has been emphasized that inspection of the small bowel to identify a second atresia is required. The laparoscopic approach for repair of duodenal atresia has been criticized for its limitation to perform this step. Given that duodenal atresia and jejunoileal atresias do not share common embryologic origins, we question the validity of this concern. Therefore, we conducted a multicenter retrospective review of duodenal atresia patients to quantify the incidence of jejunoileal atresia in this population.

METHODS: After institutional review board approval (IRB #07-12-187X), a retrospective review was conducted on all patients who have …

Turkey: Another $1 Trillion Emerging Economy?, Murat Doral

Faculty Articles

The strategic location of Turkey makes it a very important country in terms of geopolitics as well as economics. Turkey is located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, the Caucasus, and the Middle East. It is where East meets West without clashing with each other but merging with each other. Even though, industry, trade, and finance are all dominated by the expansive and crowded Istanbul, other cities and towns in Anatolia –the Anatolian Tigers- are industrializing rapidly and now participating in the global economy. Today, Turkey has the largest economy in the greater Middle East. Depending of the source, Turkey …
