Identification Of Sources Of Rhizoctonia Root Rot Resistance In Common Bean And Mapping A New Source Of Bean Rust Resistance From The Tertiary Gene Pool Of Common Bean, Pamela A. Peña-Perdomo
Identification Of Sources Of Rhizoctonia Root Rot Resistance In Common Bean And Mapping A New Source Of Bean Rust Resistance From The Tertiary Gene Pool Of Common Bean, Pamela A. Peña-Perdomo
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
An efficient screening method was developed and used to identify bean lines resistant to Rhizoctonia Root Rot caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn. Two sets of 163 and 111 lines previously evaluated for drought tolerance at Mitchell, NE and Isabela, PR were evaluated for Rhizoctonia Root Rot resistance under greenhouse conditions. This root rot data was also correlated with yield under drought stress and non stress conditions. In the first set of lines the rhizoctonia mean score ranged from 1.7 to 3.9; and in the second set the rhizoctonia mean score was between 2.6 and 5.7. There was no significant correlation …
Should The Patient Conquer?, William M. Sage
Should The Patient Conquer?, William M. Sage
Faculty Scholarship
In 1596, Robert Bainbridge carved “The patient shall conquer” into the wall of his cell in the Tower of London. It is highly unlikely that Bainbridge was an early advocate for recipients of medical care, imprisoned perhaps by a cruel sheriff denied his payroll taxes or by a domineering barber refused his fee. But its unintended meaning would immediately provoke sympathy from many health care reformers. As we confront the critical challenges of implementing national health-care reform, however, whether the patient should conquer is a legitimate topic for debate. Does the patient’s conquest risk the collapse of the health-care system …
The Challenges Of Understanding Animal Minds, Jeffrey R. Stevens
The Challenges Of Understanding Animal Minds, Jeffrey R. Stevens
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Comparative psychology is by nature an interdisciplinary science that lies at the crossroads of psychology and biology but also draws from other fields in the natural, social, and cognitive sciences. The study of the psychology of animals has been labeled animal cognition, comparative cognition, animal learning, animal psychology, and animal intelligence. Here, comparative psychology is used interchangeably with these terms, encompassing all fields that explore the psychological mechanisms underlying animal behavior, including human behavior.
The primary goal of comparative psychology is to understand the cognitive, emotional, and motivational processes of the animal mind. How do other animals perceive, learn about, …

Relationship Of Personal, Familial, And Abuse-Specific Factors With Outcome Following Childhood Sexual Abuse, C. Thresa Yancey, David J. Hansen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
An examination of the literature on factors related to outcome following child sexual abuse (CSA) revealed many factors that may contribute to symptoms displayed by victims. Factors are divided into three categories: Personal Factors, Familial Factors, and Abuse- Specific Factors. Personal factors are those inherent to the victim, including age, gender, developmental disability, attributions regarding the abuse, and treatment following abuse. Familial factors are defined as those factors associated with other family members. These include parental history of abuse, parental reaction to the disclosure, parental support of the victim, parental mental health, family stress, and treatment following abuse for the …

Milliamperage-Seconds, Kilovoltage And Patient Dose In Computed Radiography, Grace Stewart
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Radiographic techniques were applied to a human simulation pelvis phantom with evaluations of the resultant image analyzed by a designated radiologist. Results indicate that a lower patient dose is received when coupled with an increase in the tube voltage. Images analyzed demonstrated little noise variation between images, which indicates the ability to lower patient dose while maintaining quality images.

Development Of An Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (Elisa) For The Detection Of Pistachio Residues In Processed Foods, Pei Wen Lim
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Pistachios (Pistacia vera) are popular snacks and consumption of pistachios is notably increasing due to their usage as ingredients for confections, ice cream, and baked goods. The increased consumption of pistachios may lead to a higher frequency of allergic sensitization and an increased prevalence of allergic reactions to pistachios. Trace amounts of undeclared pistachio allergens can pose serious health risks for food-allergic consumers, including severe anaphylactic reactions. A highly sensitive analytical method, sandwich-type enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is applied as a critical tool for food manufacturers and food scientists to detect minute amounts of allergenic food residues in …

Objective : Dirofilariasis or heartworm disease, a mosquito-borne parasitic disease, continues to be a serious problem in canine (dogs) and feline (cats) species. The disease is caused mainly by the filarial nematode, Dirofilaria immitis. In canine dirofilariasis, the adult worms, present in the pulmonary arteries and the right ventricle, causing damages and leading to pulmonary hypertension and right-sided congestive heart failure. In addition, acute death in feline dirofilariasis causes lung injury resulting in respiratory distress. Being critical to transmission and complex disease pathology, the microfilarial stage is useful in laboratory diagnosis; however, the microfilaria identification process is laborious, difficult and …

The estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI) is necessary for supporting justice to the dead. During the early stage of death, estimation of PMI of the corpses depends on the changing of muscle contraction and physical conditions, but this method can be used effectively in case of death within 24 hours. Flies are the first organisms which swarm on corpses. Consequently, accuracy of the estimation of PMI using fly larvae collected from corpses depends on identification of the species of flies. However, the macroscopic method using posterior spiracle is not definite for identifying the species of flies. Therefore, the molecular …

A significant body of research exists that explores the stressors of raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There are fewer studies, however, that examine specific effective coping strategies of mothers of children with an ASD. This qualitative study explored mothers’ perceptions of effective coping strategies for their parenting stressors. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 mothers to inquire about their personal coping methods. Interviews were coded and emergent themes identified which included coping strategies such as “me time,” “planning,” “knowledge is power,” “sharing the load,” “lifting the restraints of labels,” and “recognizing the joys.” The information from …
