Preparation Of High-Capacity Supports Containing Protein G Immobilized To Porous Silica, Abby J. Jackson, Elizabeth M. Karle, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

This study examined the preparation of high-capacity silica supports containing immobilized protein G. A maximum content of 39 mg protein G/g silica was obtained when using 100 Å pore size silica, followed by 33 mg/g for 50 Å silica and 9.3–24 mg/g for 300–4000 Å silica. The surface coverage of protein G increased with pore size, with a maximum level of 0.037 μmol/m2 being obtained for 4000 Å silica. These supports gave comparable apparent activities (i.e., 30– 47% binding to rabbit immunoglobulin G, or IgG), with the highest binding capacities (71–77 mg IgG/g silica) being obtained for 50–100 Å …

A Clouded Future: Analysis Of Microsoft Windows Azure As A Platform For Hosting E-Science Applications, Ian Blair

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Microsoft Windows Azure is Microsoft's cloud based platform for hosting .NET applications. Azure provides a simple, cost effective method for outsourcing application hosting. Windows Azure has caught the eye of researchers in e-science who require parallel computing infrastructures to process mountains of data. Windows Azure offers the same benefits to e-science as it does to other industries. This paper examines the technology behind Azure and analyzes two case studies of e-science projects built on the Windows Azure platform.

Cancer Incidence And Mortality In Indigenous Australians In Queensland, 1997–2006, Suzanne P. Moore, Peter K. O'Rourke, Kylie-Ann Mallitt, Gail Garvey, Adèle C. Green, Michael D. Coory, Patricia C. Valery

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Objective: To examine cancer incidence and mortality in Indigenous Queenslanders. Design, setting and patients: Assessment of indirectly standardised incidence and mortality ratios for Indigenous Australians in Queensland diagnosed with cancer from 1997 to 2006, compared with the total Queensland population. Main outcome measures: Standardised incidence and mortality ratios. Results: Compared with the total Queensland population, Indigenous Queenslanders had a lower overall incidence of cancer (standardised incidence ratio, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.75–0.82), but a higher incidence of some of the more fatal cancer types. Overall cancer mortality was higher (standardised mortality ratio, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.28–1.45) and similar to rates for …

Chromatographic Studies Of Changes In Binding Of Sulfonylurea Drugs To Human Serum Albumin Due To Glycation And Fatty Acids, Sara B. G. Basiaga, David S. Hage Nov 2010

Chromatographic Studies Of Changes In Binding Of Sulfonylurea Drugs To Human Serum Albumin Due To Glycation And Fatty Acids, Sara B. G. Basiaga, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

This report examines the use of high-performance affinity chromatography as a screening tool for studying the change in binding by sulfonylurea drugs to the protein human serum albumin (HSA) during diabetes. The effects of both the non-enzymatic glycation of HSA and the presence of fatty acids on these interactions were considered using a zonal elution format. It was found that there was significant increase (i.e., 2.7 to 3.6-fold) in the relative retention of several sulfonylurea drugs (i.e., acetohexamide, tolbutamide, glybenclamide and gliclazide) on columns containing normal versus glycated HSA. The addition of various long chain fatty acids to the mobile …

Picturing Rural America: An Analysis Of The Representation Of Contemporary Rural America In Picture Books For Children, Karen Eppley Nov 2010

Picturing Rural America: An Analysis Of The Representation Of Contemporary Rural America In Picture Books For Children, Karen Eppley

The Rural Educator

A quiet but persistent dialog about the importance of place is happening in educational research. This study contributes to that conversation by offering a critical analysis of how picture books show a “placed,” rural America. To increase understanding of the social constructions of rurality, 24 picture books were analyzed using qualitative content analysis to determine how contemporary rural life is represented in picture books for children. Results indicated images falling into six categories: Rural people are self-reliant; rural people are connected; rural people are satisfied and happy; rural people are diverse; rural areas are expendable and, rural people are ‘Other’.
